NOAM (Night Out at Max’s) for Rosh Chodesh Kislev.

Sunday, December 7 14th Annual TSGW Dinner.

On Monday, we started learning: I. Speaking in a soft and pleasant tone to

teachers and parents. This can be difficult to get across because “pleasant is in the ear of the listener,” Lots of examples/ practice/role playing are necessary to crystallize this concept. It is interesting to note that Nachmanides (Ramban), in his famous Igeres (letter for the Ages), opens with: “Accustom yourself to speak gently to all people at all times.” II. Not interrupting parents or teachers as

a function of the Mitzvah of Yir’ah. We focused on not interrupting parents or

teachers as a function of Reverence. (As standard proper conduct, it applies to all people.) Here again, role playing and practice are advised, including the proper use of “Excuse Me” (i.e. a child can’t say excuse me and then start talking without being given permission). Also included in this precept:

Not “cutting in” or injecting one’s comments to other’s phone conversations.

Using “Excuse Me” when parent or teacher is engaged in a task or thinking or reading.

It is not proper conduct to walk up very close to people who are conversing and listen to their conversation while waiting for an “opening”.

“Excuse Me” and waiting for permission are also required prior to walking between two people who are talking to each other.

Rabbi Avi Shulman says in his book Learning Life

Lessons (volume II, chapter 12) that when one interrupts another person he is causing a breach of Derech Eretz, common courtesy. It also sends a message that says, “What you have to say is really unimportant. My understanding of the situation is much greater than yours. So why waste time listening to you?”

He quotes an article found in a medical journal: Obesity, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure are some obvious risks for a heart attack. But you did know that nearly half of all heart attack victims have absolutely NO advance warning symptoms? That’s right. The first heart disease symptom they experience is the actual heart attack! And did you know there’s a little-known risk factor that doesn’t even show up on ANY of the traditional tests? That’s right. It doesn’t show up on any blood test. You can’t detect it with a stethoscope or EKG. And it doesn’t show up on any high-tech medical scans, either. So, what is this hidden heart attack trigger? Simply this: Several university studies have found that people who interrupt conversations are at greater risk for heart problems. In fact, one study at Duke University found that people who interrupt are up to seven times more likely to get heart disease! Why is this so? The researchers theorize that people who interrupt are excessively competitive and controlling – two hallmarks of the worst “Type A” personalities. Now here’s the amazing part: These high risk people can lower their risk without totally altering their personalities … and without any drugs, exercise or dietary changes. All they have to do is practice being good listeners. In one study, the test subjects focused on being silent while others talked. RESULT: They lowered both their blood pressure and their stress hormone levels!

ראש חדש חשון Dear Parents,שיחיו

At long last Election Day is upon us. Tuesday, November 4th is the day when we have the opportunity to decide what we feel is best for our country and what issues matter most. It is a day that can be used to bring benefit to our community and its institutions.

Echoing the call of our foremost Torah leaders both past and present,

we would like to remind you what a difference it makes to a community for its constituents to participate in elections. The importance of simply voting in elections cannot be overlooked.

Elected officials at all levels closely scrutinize the voting statistics in

every district. Their policies, decisions and willingness to help their constituents are very much based on their findings. Communities that vote are communities that are heard. Securing political support with regard to the issues that affect us deeply – the security of Eretz Yisroel, protection against domestic and international terrorism, increased government aid to our educational institutions, the moral climate of society, and improving the quality and quantity of much needed government services available in our neighborhoods – all depend on each and every individual taking the time to go to the polls on Election Day.

Help yourself, your family and your community – please make sure to vote.

Sincerely,

Rabbi Ariel Sadwin
