We heal the sins of our past- Joshua 5

Now when all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the Canaanite kings along the coast heard how the LORD had dried up the Jordan before the Israelites until they had crossed over, their hearts melted in fear and they no longer had the courage to face the Israelites. 2 At that time the LORD said to Joshua, “Make flint knives and circumcise the Israelites again.” 3 So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the Israelites at Gibeath Haaraloth.

4 Now this is why he did so: All those who came out of Egypt—all the men of military age—died in the wilderness on the way after leaving Egypt. 5 All the people that came out had been circumcised, but all the people born in the wilderness during the journey from Egypt had not. 6 The Israelites had moved about in the wilderness forty years until all the men who were of military age when they left Egypt had died, since they had not obeyed the LORD. For the LORD had sworn to them that they would not see the land he had solemnly promised their ancestors to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.

7 So he raised up their sons in their place, and these were the ones Joshua circumcised. They were still uncircumcised because they had not been circumcised on the way. 8 And after the whole nation had been circumcised, they remained where they were in camp until they were healed.9 Then the LORD said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.” So the place has been called Gilgal to this day.

10 On the evening of the fourteenth day of the month, while camped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, the Israelites celebrated the Passover. 11 The day after the Passover, that very day, they ate some of the produce of the land: unleavened bread and roasted grain. 12 The manna stopped the day after they ate this food from the land; there was no longer any manna for the Israelites, but that year they ate the produce of Canaan.

13 Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?”14 “Neither,” he replied, “but as commander of the army of the LORD I have now come.” Then Joshua fell facedown to the ground in reverence, and asked him, “What message does my Lord

have for his servant?”15 The commander of the LORD’s army replied, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.

(6-8) Emotional Infant – I look for other people to take care of me rather than looking to take care of them. I have difficulty in describing and experiencing my feelings in healthy ways and rarely enter others emotional world. I am driving by instant gratification. People perceive me as inconsiderate, insensitive, and self-centered.

(9-15) Emotional Child – I am content if life is going my way and I am receiving allthe things I want and need. When disappointment, stress, tragedy, or anger enters the picture, I unravel inside. I complain when I don’t get my way and let others know through my sarcasm and manipulation that I use revenge to punish those who have opposed me. (16-18) Emotional Adolescents – I give and serve and help others but it is mostly on my terms and when it is convenient for me. I know the right way to behave as an adult or as a civil person, but when I am threatened I tend to be defensive. I may admit some fault during a conflict, but I deflect to the other person, pointing out their flaw. I have trouble listening to other’s pain and disappointment because I am still preoccupied with myself.

(19-24) Emotional Adults- I can respect and love others without having to change them. I am not overly critical or judgmental, even though I can disagree with others on their views or decisions. When under stress I don’t begin to blame others or become a victim. I seek to reflect on my own weaknesses and to take responsibility for my words and actions. I am quick to ask forgiveness and seek to make things right when they have gone wrong. I am convinced that I am loved by Christ and this frees me from feeling that I have anything to prove. •

Idolatry – defined as "the sin below all sins". Israel's 400 year cultural experience continued to shape their lives rather than God's call to live in their spiritual heritage.

IDOLATRY

IDOLATRY is the SIN BENEATH ALL SINS. Israel lost their identity once they became slaves, and after being physically freed from their bondage they had been conformed to their cultural experience (Egypt’s pagan practices) more than their spiritual heritage.

Joshua 21:45

Not one of the good promises that the Lord made to Israel failed. All came to pass.

Moses and the Promised Land Matt. 17

After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light.3 Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”  While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”
