My boys are natural

explorers.

What do you think the old lady means? What isisisis an explorer?

Hi gran!

www.ks1resources.co.uk

Whether we know it or not, we are all natural-born explorers. As babies we learn about life and how things work by exploring what’s around around us.

We make new discoveries every day.

Whatever you are doing, you are finding out about

things and exploring all the time. Some of you may even grow

up to become famous explorers! www.ks1resources.co.uk

Why do people explore the world today? Why do people explore the world today? Why do people explore the world today? Why do people explore the world today?

www.ks1resources.co.uk

So why do explorers do what they do?

Some just want to be famous and to be remembered in the

same way that famous sportsmen are remembered. Others are scientists who want to find new things while some, like me, just want

to have adventures.

Benedict Allen, author and modern day explorer.www.ks1resources.co.uk

In 2010, we trekked for two months across floating sea-ice in freezing temperatures to investigate the Arctic Ocean and the problems that are

threatening marine life there.

That’s why I’m an explorer.

I want to understand more about the natural world and how we can protect it.

Exploring outer space is exciting. We’re hoping that one day soon we can send astronauts from the

International Space Station to build an outpost on the Moon. Then we can prepare for a trip to Mars. Maybe one day in the future, people will be able to live on Mars.

The International Space Station

www.ks1resources.co.uk

There are lots of reasons why people explore.

Can you think of the main reasons? Can you think of the main reasons? Can you think of the main reasons? Can you think of the main reasons?

Curiosity makes us explore. We like to learn new things and we like to understand how things work.

Exploration helps us to do that.

www.ks1resources.co.uk

We want to discover things that will make the world a better place. Exploration is

one way we can do that.

www.ks1resources.co.uk

Exploration gives us a better understanding of new lands and new people. Long ago there were lots of new places to discover. Now we know that there are no more new lands to be discovered on Earth so, we want to explore in space. We want to know about

other planets in our solar system.

www.ks1resources.co.uk

Exploration of other planets means we might find a place to build small colonies that could be

another home for humans. Then if we need to, we

could live there.

www.ks1resources.co.uk

Discovering new places can be very helpful to us because they often have materials and natural

resources we don’t have. New places and even new planets, might have raw materials that are almost all used up on Earth.

www.ks1resources.co.uk

Exploration helps us to understand about the universe. Are there

other life forms? What could we learn from

them? What would they learn from us?

Finding other life in the universe could be the

greatest discovery of all!

www.ks1resources.co.uk

By exploring in outer space and looking at the Earth from up there, it will help us to see and understand our world better so that we can find new ways to protect it.

For as long as people have existed, they have gone on explorations or voyages to unknown places to

investigate new things and search for newdiscoveries.

Why?

www.ks1resources.co.uk

Finding new places to liveFinding new places to liveFinding new places to liveFinding new places to live

Long ago, when places became overcrowded, people explored to find new places to live where it wasn’t so overcrowded. They explored to find water and food and anything else they needed.

Now, people explore to find out more about the world and the universe. Some scientists talk of people one day living in colonies on the Moon or Mars when we run out of room on Earth.

Exploring to understand our pastExploring to understand our pastExploring to understand our pastExploring to understand our past

We explore to learn about what happened long ago.

Archaeologists explore to learn about people and things that lived long, long ago. Scientists study the ice in the Arctic to learn how to protect sea life and, deep sea divers explore the remains of shipwrecks on the sea bed.

Exploring to find new plants and animalsExploring to find new plants and animalsExploring to find new plants and animalsExploring to find new plants and animals

When explorers travelled to new lands, they often discovered plants and animals that were different from the ones they knew at home.

Explorers still search in far away places looking for new types of plants and animals that have never been seen before.

Exploring to find resourcesExploring to find resourcesExploring to find resourcesExploring to find resources

We use fossil fuels – natural gas and oil - to power cars, heat our homes and produce electricity. The more we use, the more we need to keep on exploring to find more.

Fossil fuels have been found beneath the ocean floor and now, the Arctic is being explored to see if we can use the fossil fuels there.

Exploring to understand and protect our worldExploring to understand and protect our worldExploring to understand and protect our worldExploring to understand and protect our world

Long ago, explorers searched for new lands and easier ways to get to them by sea.

Now, people explore to understand and protect our world. Using satellite images, scientists can track elephants moving through the Sahara Desert. They have learned that elephants survive the hot, dry desert by moving from one watering hole to the next. Scientists can use this knowledge to protect the elephants.

Earth

Television programmes like Planet Earth bring all these discoveries and explorations into our living rooms so that we can enjoy them too but ………..

There will always be people who want to see for themselves.

Those are the people who will be the real explorers.

www.ks1resources.co.uk

What are/were the effects of exploration? Why do/did people explore?

Objectives:Children should learn:• the reasons for exploration

Activities:Discuss with the children why people explore the world and space today. List the reasons why people explore the world today on a flip chart or white board.

Ask the children to write paragraphs in the chosen colours to show reasons for exploration then and now. Using a Venn diagram, discuss the reasons that are the same and the ones that are different.

Outcomes:Children:• record reasons for exploration •identify similarities and differences between exploration then and now

Notes:This activity builds on children's knowledge of exploration today. There are a number of overlapping reasons for exploration in the present and in the past, eg

looking for resources, personal reasons, the future over-population of the planet.

The Venn diagram draws attention to this and links to Mathematics Ma4, Handling data.

The use of two colours in writing will help in constructing discrete paragraphs.
