our voices in song in this cross-Canada event. When we sing together we can make our voices heard, and be a voice for justice! The lyrics say:

Sing it, sing it, Right out loud

Sing it together like a voice in the crowd.

Sing for the rainbow behind the clouds.

Sing it together ‘til the walls come tumbling down

Sing for joy. Sing for sorrow

Sing for light, For tomorrow

Sing for truth, Sing for freedom

Let the music take you, take you, take you, take you home.

Sing for life, And Sing for freedom

Sing for love, and for healing.

Sing for those who have no choices.

Sing for those who have no voices.

In December 2001 the Honourable Vivienne Poy presented a motion to celebrate Asian Heritage Month, it was unanimously adopted by the Senate of Canada. In May 2002 Parliament subsequently signed a declaration proclaiming May to be Asian Heritage Month. In 2005, the Government of Ontario made the same proc-lamation at Queen's Park.

Asian Heritage Month promotes Canada's diversity. It strives to celebrate the vi-brant and growing Asian community from the arts and science to sport, business, and government. This initiative offers all Canadians an opportunity to learn more about the history of Asian Canadians and to celebrate their ongoing contributions to the growth and prosperity of Canada.

Here at Meadowvale Village we embrace Asian Heritage Month and celebrate our place in the global village. Throughout the month we will begin the day by en-joying energetic music from around Asia, we will also learn interesting facts about different Asian cultures and about the achievements of Asian Canadians during our morning announcements. May is a great time to visit our library and read our dual language books featuring many Asian languages. Finally, our teachers bring wonderful books and activities to their classrooms as part of our appreciation of AHM.

Last month, Grade 2 students who wanted to try out there creative, engineering skills, came and participated in Lego Club with Mrs. Chapman. Those who participated, received a photo with their creation. Please ask your child to see their final creation!

PLEASE NOTE: Whenever you enter the building you MUST notify the office, sign-in and pick up a visitor

badge. At Meadowvale Village we try to provide continuity and a stable environment for ALL students to learn.

Our students have voted for their favourite Forest of Reading books. The votes showed:

Our favourite Blue Spruce book was The Night Gardener, by the Fan Brothers. This beautiful picture book is about a boy named William who discovers that the tree outside his window has been sculpted into an owl. Day after day, topiaries start to appear all over town, and each one is more beautiful than the last. William's dull little town is transformed by the night gardener into a vibrant, bus-tling town . And though the mysterious night gardener disappears as suddenly as he appeared, Wil-liam—and his town—are changed forever.

Our favourite Silver Birch Express book was West Coast Wild, by Deborah Hodge (author) and Karen Rec-zuch (illustrator). This magnificent nature alphabet book explores the Pacific west coast ― its ancient rainforest, the rugged beach, and vast ocean. We learn about whales, bears, wolves, eagles and a variety of marine species which thrive on the west coast of Canada.

Our favourite Silver Birch Fiction book was Heart of a Champion, by Ellen Schwartz. Ten-year-old Kenny is a Japanese-Canadian whose life is turned upside down after Japan attacks Pearl Harbor in 1941; schools are closed, businesses are con-fiscated, fathers are arrested and sent to work camps in the BC interior and mothers and children are relocated to intern-ment camps. While living at the internment camp, Kenny gets permission to turn a field covered in litter into baseball dia-mond. The baseball diamond transforms the lives of the children living in the camp.

Stay tuned! We will be finding out how the rest of Ontario voted on May 18th at our Forest of Reading Celebration taking place at the Powerade Centre.

We are pleased to be holding a Heart and Stroke Foundation Jump Rope for Heart event on Friday, May 26th. All money raised will support the Heart and Stroke Foundation in their mission to promote children’s health and fund vital heart and stroke research.

Jump Rope for Heart encourages kids to get active by skipping rope while they collect pledges for heart disease and stroke research. They also learn the importance of living a healthy lifestyle and giving back to their communi-ty. This year marks Jump Rope for Heart’s 35th Anniversary and the Heart and Stroke Foundation is striving to get 1 million kids Jumping in close to 4,000 schools across Canada. Let’s be part of it!

We need your help to reach our School fundraising goal of $4000.

Please help support your child’s fundraising efforts by registering them online at JumpRopeForHeart.ca and send out donation request emails to friends, family and col-leagues. Online fundraising is the quickest way to reach all of your contacts and online donors receive an automatic tax receipt. Plus, when students receive their first online donation (of any amount), they will

receive a $5 kick-start and a free skipping rope* from the Heart & Stroke Foundation!

Please visit JumpRopeForHeart.ca and start fundraising today!

Each student will be bringing home a pledge envelope if you prefer to collect donations in-person. Please ensure that their pledge envelope is returned on the day of their school’s Jump Event Day.

* Skipping ropes will be delivered to your school after your Jump event.

Children’s Mental Health Week

Children’s Mental Health Week is May 1-7th. 1 in 5 Ontario children and youth has a mental

health problem - that's about 500,000 kids. Challenges range from anxiety, depression and prob-

lems with conduct, to eating concerns. Children's Mental Health Week focuses on increasing

awareness of the signs of child and youth mental health problems, decreasing stigma and under-

standing that help is available and treatment can work.

Here are some helpful online resources for parents:

WEAR GREEN

Please remember to mark your agendas and wear green on Friday, May 5, 2017 to symbolize our

unity on the important issue of Mental Health. Staff and students are encouraged to wear green.

For example, you can wear a green headband, earrings, a broach, a scarf, green shoes or running

shoes, a shirt, tie, blouse, t-shirt, pants, vest, ball cap or hat, hair ties, a green ribbon, . . . Wearing

one, some or any combination from this list would be wonderful! Be as creative as you wish! A

little or a lot, it’s your choice. The most important thing is that we ALL WEAR GREEN this Friday,

May 5th – students and staff alike, . . . and that we all know why we’re wearing green.

Lighting Ontario Green for Children’s Mental Health Week

Look for Ontario landmarks, such as the CN Tower, to be lit green for Children’s Mental Health

Week. Children’s Mental Health Ontario and Canadian Mental Health Association in Ontario are

joining forces again to get as many local landmarks across Ontario lit green as possible. It’s a

great way to raise awareness about the importance of children and adult mental health in commu-

nities across Ontario.
