Saint John’s Day Family Gathering Join us on September 15 at 2:00pm, as we celebrate our namesake, Saint John Chrysostom by gathering for good food and friendship.

The menu consists of boiled whole lobster, ribs, corn on the cob, mac ‘n’ cheese, potato salad, clam chowder and for dessert, a selection of homemade pies. Assorted beverages will be available.

Tickets are $25pp, 10 & under free. Tickets are available now for purchase in the parish office. Ticket sales will resume following Masses in August.

In the first reading, we hear that Abraham, saw three men standing nearby, “... he ran ... to greet them” Not only did he greet them warmly, he provided water to bathe their feet, Sarah prepared a meal, and he “waited on them”. We call this Radical Hospitality, an attitude that many par-ishes are intentionally adopting. We are all called to make the strangers in our pews feel welcome. This may mean stepping out of our comfort zone to assist a newcomer. Who is the stranger that God is putting in your path today? How will you respond?

J oin Us in September. God, Coffee and Conversation

is a drop in activity to discuss the Sunday Gospel of the day. We will be on break during July and August and

will resume in September. We will announce the date it resumes in this bulletin. We welcome all people to this discussion group. Anyone in the community is welcome to attend. You need not attend every week. It has been a great opportunity to discuss faith in a safe, confidential, and friendly space. We hope you will join us when we resume in September.

Rest In Peace

We ask that you remember in prayers this week

John “Larry” Griffin, John McSweeney

& Diane Smith

who have recently been called home to God.

We do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, about those who have fallen asleep, so that you may not grieve like the rest, who

have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose, so too will God, through Jesus, bring

with him those who have fallen asleep. - 1 Thes 4:13-14

Fr. Mark Zittle is a Carmelite Friar. He is the Director of Spiritual Retreat Ministries at Fordham University, in Bronx, New York. He will be speaking to our Parish on July 27 & 28 regarding Cross Catholic Outreach. Fr. McLaughlin spoke to us last year. He is a wonderful speaker and we look forward to his update.

Time and Talent Participating in parish life need not be a big time commit-ment. We welcome you to be a lector or Eucharistic minis-ter at the Mass you attend. In September and October we would like to have distribution of Communion under both species and we are looking for more Eucharistic Ministers to carry that out. Also, we are always looking for ushers. With the summer months, people are on vacation and if oth-ers can lend a hand to fill in, it would help make things go smoothly. Other ways you can help out are with parish col-lections for those in need, selling tickets after Mass for our various activities and helping out with hospitality at our events. The parish health care ministry is looking for volun-teers and our faith formation program welcomes new volun-teers as well. The St. Vincent de Paul group is always open to your participation. Please let Mary Campion know how you would like to be involved or call the office at 617-323-4410.

I n this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus affirms that to be a disciple we must also sit at his feet and listen to him. St. Vincent de Paul taught that it is only in prayer that we can give selfless loving service to those who are poor. This week, please say a special prayer each day for the poor and forgotten in our parish.

To Those Who are Serving We honor the service and pray for the continuing safety of our parishioners and family members serving our country. Please remember in your

prayers: Daniel G. Connell, U.S Marine Corps

F rances Xavier Cabrini is an example of being both “Martha and Mary”: Prayer and Action. Born in 1850 in

Lombardy, Italy she became a nun and was eventually chosen to come to the USA in 1889 to serve Italian immigrants. “Filled with a deep trust in God and endowed with a wonderful administrative ability, Frances founded 67 institutions, including orphanages, schools, and hospitals, within 35 years dedicated to caring for the poor, uneducated, sick, abandoned, and especially for the Italian immigrants. Her institutions were spread out in places all over the United States, including New York, Colorado, and Illinois... Frances was known for being as resourceful as she was prayerful. She was always able to find people to donate their money, time, and support for her institutions. In 1909, Frances became a naturalized citizen of the United States. Mother Cabrini was beatified on November 13, 1938, by Pope Pius XI and canonized by Pope Pius XII on July 7, 1946, making her the first United States citizen to be canonized. Her feast day is celebrated on November 13 and she is the patron saint of immigrants.(www.catholic.org) Note Elizabeth Ann Seton is the first American born saint, another woman of prayer, contemplation and action.

Thanks to all who participated in the Catholic Appeal. The goal was set for us at $45,120. We reached $40,190. Good work everyone! Special thanks to Tom Arsenault who led us through another year. To do this well takes a lot more time than one would imagine, and Tom really stepped up for us. Thanks Tom. It is not too late. If you have not yet had the opportuni-ty to contribute to the Boston Catholic Appeal in sup-port of Saint John Chrysostom you can still do so and have your contribution counted. Go to the web site bostoncatholicappeal.org/ or stop in at the office for an envelope to mail your check in. Again, thank you for your support of the parish and archdiocese.

Community Corner Reflection Today’s Gospel is a very familiar one! We can picture ourselves in this scene with Martha, Mary and Jesus. I for one can relate to Martha. I think back on what my life as a mother was like with two boys thirteen months apart in age. It seemed like the household tasks just kept growing every day and it was hard to keep up. Even now I get frustrated when I am doing all the household work and other people are relaxing. Can’t everyone please load their own dishes in the dishwasher! Martha is frustrated, anxious and feels like her sister is treating her unfairly. She cries out to a higher power asking Jesus to take her side and rebuke Mary. Jesus instead takes the opportunity to teach us a lesson about life itself. Hospitality is important and work is essential so Jesus is not putting Martha down so much as he is showing us that life requires balance. Today, we as Americans feel the pressure to be always on the go, accomplishing much. However, what about Jesus? What about slowing down and listening to what Jesus might be saying to us in our hearts? When we look at what we are doing in a given day or week, are we spending time on what is important to us? Last week Jesus told us that our lives will be properly oriented when we Love God with all our being and love our neighbor. We have to be both Martha and Mary. At the parish we support each other in growing in both areas. We are currently planning what our parish life will look like from Sept 2019 to June 2020. We want to have times of prayer, worship, contemplation and also outreach to neighbor. Please let us know what your ideas are in these areas. If you are around on Fridays we have adoration of the Blessed Sacrament after the 9 am daily Mass from 9:30-10:30 am. Stop by and sit in contemplation with Jesus.
