The Smoke Guard® system Model 1500 (M1500) is a newapproach to smoke containment in buildings. Designed to fitopenings up to 12 feet wide and 12 feet high, the system typi-cally deploys on local smoke detector alarm.

HOUSING. Mounted above the ceiling, the fully assembledhousing measures 7 inches tall by 12 inches wide. The hous-ing enclosure contains essential system components including;the control unit, backup power, motor, and screen. The hous-ing is designed to be mounted to either the deck above orthe rated wall.

CONTROL UNIT. Controls motor driving screen up anddown, connects to local smoke detection. There is logic builtin the controls to protect the system from conditions such asmisalignment and obstruction. The control also monitorsdeploy status and the overall state of the system.

BATTERY BACKUP. On loss of primary building power, theM1500 battery backup continues operation of the unit. Thesystem is compatible with multiple AC power standards forboth domestic and international installations.

SCREEN. The screen is made of polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE) coated fiberglass material. This combination pro-duces a light, flexible fabric with an extremely low coeffi-cient of friction. The screen material satisfies all the require-ments of UL 1784.

LEADING EDGE SENSOR. This system is equipped with aleading edge sensor at the bottom of the screen. This fea-ture acts as a limit switch letting the unit know when it isfully deployed. The leading edge sensor also detectsdeployment obstructions.

WALL SWITCH. Two wall switches, one for each side of thescreen, are provided to enable egress from either directionof the corridor.

RAIL DETAIL. The M1500 rails guide the screen and createthe air leakage seal. Portions of the drive mechanism arealso contained within the rails. This detail may be con-cealed in the walls or mounted on an existing wall. visit www.smokeguard.com/M1500 for more details

APPLICATIONS

ENCLOSED ELEVATOR LOBBY SPACE. One of the most widely used applications for theM1500 is to enclose a lobby space. In this application a unit may be placed on either sideof a bank of elevators to create a smoke-rated lobby space.

COUNTERTOP ENCLOSURE. In situations where walls are required to only be smokerated, smoke control is often required for countertop openings such as hospital pharmacyand laboratory areas. Here walls are required to be smoke-rated only. M1500 provides alight-weight alternative to heavy steel door for these high activity spaces.

ATRIUM ENCLOSURE. An atrium can be a challenge when it comes to designing smokecontrol. M1500 is the solution for smoke separation between a large atrium space andegress into adjoining corridors. Hotels and office buildings often use this kind of design toprovide for grand entry lobby spaces while also providing corridors to egress into otherareas of the building. The SG Model 1500s would be positioned so that the corridorscould be separated from the atrium space to allow the use of smaller fans to evacuatesmoke from the atrium area, without having to account air flow in the adjoining corridorsas well.

GAS SUPPRESSION SYSTEM CONTAINMENT. Gas suppression is used to protect valuablepaper records, computers, or other items that could be substantially damaged by water-based sprinkler systems. M1500 creates a containment barrier for gas suppression systemsby deploying after the initial alarm and prior to the release of gas. The gas is inert and notdangerous, M1500 helps maintain the air-tight environment needed to ensure proper func-tioning of the suppressions system. Designers may desire for the area to be open andaccessible during the work day, but if a fire occurs, they will want to section off the protect-ed area using doors, walls, or M1500 as elements of the containment barrier.
