Dear Parents and Carers

Fingers crossed, it looks like we are through the worst of the winter weather! As you will appreciate we are one of the few schools with an effective snow clearance plan. Unless it is actually snowing faster than we can clear, we will always be open.

As we wave goodbye to the term we also wave goodbye (or at least say “ciao”) to our ski party, off to spend the week on the slopes in Piancavallo. I’m sure that they will have a great time. My thanks go to Mr Kirk, Mrs Ball, Mr Higgins, Mrs Horn, Miss Boon and Miss Jones for organising and running this trip.

In the last week we have welcomed Miss Karen Barker as an Associate Assistant Headteacher to our Senior Leadership Team. Miss Barker will be with us through the rest of this academic year, working primarily on curriculum issues.

It always strikes me that when we return from the February half term holiday, it is just that much lighter in the mornings and evenings and Spring is finally on its way, with all the unfolding joy that it brings.

Have a great half term week, whatever you are doing. As ‘Anon’ once said, “You don’t have to wait until Valentine’s Day to show someone that you care for them.”

We start back on Monday 18 February.

Author Andrew Newbound visits Weavers School

On Friday 11 January, Andrew Newbound, author of Demon Strike, came to Weavers School to run creative writing workshops.

Students from Year 7 to Year 11 attended different sessions and were challenged to think about describing their home or school using all 5 senses. Some associations were easier to think of than others. Then volunteers were given an exercise to describe a word or phrase to a blind person with no visual references or to someone who is deaf without any aural references using the senses as a guide.

Another exercise involved emotions with some more unusual words being put into a sentence about students’ experiences.

The final task was to portray how emotions are displayed by describing body language and appearance.

Library news

Student feedback comments: ‘I enjoyed the activity of describing something without a sense’ ‘The author was fun and interacted with us’ ‘The author helped us learn a new English skill’ ‘Awesome, exciting’ ‘It got us thinking’ ‘He involved the audience in a lot of activities’

During December 2012 there was a competition running in the Library. Students answered 12 general knowledge questions about Christmas and wrote a poem as a tie breaker.

Winners: Vikram Kumar 8RF and Cara-Louise Nimmo 10PR

Runners-up: Callum Slack 9VS, Rebecca Hunt-Murphy 7RH and Megan Turner 7SC

SSCo programme at Weavers

During this half term Weavers has had 60 Year 3 & 4 Freemans pupils every Wednesday learning how to play hockey. Our Sixth Form leaders Emma Bolton, Tia Wray, Sandy Strathern and Ben Pegg, with the help from Year 10 leaders have led a class of 30 pupils and taught them some fantastic hockey skills. These new skills were on display at the district hockey tournament for the school games on Wednesday 6 February at Weavers.

Well done to all leaders involved
