When considering employment plans, I think of my students as careering. The term careering means to go at top speed in a headlong manner (which we know most teens do!);a career being a vocation or profession requiring preparation; and, from the Medieval Latin word carraria -which referred to a road for vehicles which became the word car.In other words, in this process each student has a personal car, or vehicle , for going at optimal speed down a vocational path. 5Slide #Web 2.0 Careering with SCOISSCOISCISSouth Carolina Occupation Information System

This version of CIS is created andmaintained by intoCareers, an outreach center within the College of Educationat the University of Oregon. Access to CISis available to you through your school or the organization providing you withcareer development services. You may access all of the content in CIS withoutentering any personal information.

To take advantage of some componentsof this site, you must create a personal portfolio. You only need a user nameand password to create a portfolio and must enter a first and last name. Afteryou create a portfolio, you have complete control over the information youchoose to save. In order to make the most use of the portfolio, you will needto enter or save personal information such as your preferences and notes on whyyou are interested in particular careers or educational opportunities.

intoCareers adheres to guidelines created by theChildren's On-Line Privacy Protection Act of 1998 and the Family EducationalRights and Privacy Act of 1996. We respect your privacy. Except as statedherein, or as otherwise provided or permitted by law, this information is notdisclosed to any other group or agency for any purpose, nor, except asnecessary to correct system problems, is individual information looked at bystaff of intoCareers.

General Website Activity

In general, we maintain logs of site usage in order to improve the site. Thisinformation is collected in aggregate and is not identifiable to an individualuser. We gather such information as how often content is accessed, frequency ofresponses for assessment questions, average length of user session, etc. Thisinformation is reported in aggregate and may be shared with others but cannotbe used to identify individuals or the data they save in their portfolio.

Institution-level Reports

Schools or agenciesthat make CIS available to their students or clients can receive aggregatedinformation in the form of various reports. This information cannot be used toidentify individual users. These reports are designed to help CIS Coordinators(i.e., individual at the institution responsible for providing access to CIS)evaluate use of the CIS by their students or clients and enhance their careerdevelopment programs and services.

Portfolios for students at K-12Institutions

K-12 institutions are covered by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Actof 1996 or FERPA. Additionally, CIS is designed in accord with the Children'sOn-Line Privacy Protection Act of 1998.

FERPA includesprovisions that reflect the way CIS operates in K-12 institutions. First, portions of all student portfolios at a school are accessible to the CISCoordinator for the institution and to designees of the CIS Coordinator. However, under FERPA, the Coordinator and/or the designees must have a"legitimate interest" to look at material in a student's portfolio.CIS Coordinators and their designees can only view personal reflections, ornotes, if the student is Opted-In. The CIS Coordinator may set a policy inwhich all students are Opted-In or leave the choice to the student. If thepolicy is set so that all students are Opted-In, the student will receivenotification of this policy the first time they log in.

Provisions of theChildren's On-Line Privacy Protection Act of 1998 require verifiable parentalconsent in order to collect personal information on individuals under the ageof 13, (Child). Schools making CIS available to students under the age of 13 need to obtain written authorization from parents or legalguardians before a Child creates an on-line portfolio. The parent must agree tothe provisions of the CIS Privacy Policy. Parents may obtain access to theirChilds portfolio from the schools CIS Coordinator or by using the Childsuser name and password. CIS Coordinators can delete the Childs portfolio ifthe parent wishes to prohibit future use of the portfolio. CIS Coordinators mayalso request that the option to create a personal portfolio be disabled for allstudents at a school.
