Web Two Point WHAT?An Introduction to “Web 2.0”

Reality Check?

Someone says: “I think that’s generational.”

You hear:

“You’re old.”

“The man who is too old to learn was probably

always too old to learn.”

Henry S. Haskins, teacher, d 1957

You might be a Luddite if…

Any of these phrases came out of your mouth in the past year:

“I’ll have my secretary mimeograph that.”

“Who needs MP3s when I have LPs?”

“WHY can’t people just communicate face-to-face?”

Technology may be key

• 93% of youth (12-17) are online every day (Pew, 2007)

• Connecting with and relating to youth in ways they prefer may be key to keeping them involved and interested.

• Web 2.0 tools can also increase efficiency and reduce costs.

Most Common Excuse

Most Common Excuse

To learn new terminology

To keep up on more websites

To participate in Extension 2.0

I ain’t got time to bleed.

But you have time to…

• Collaborate on a document by emailing it back and forth.

• Check multiple sources for grants and new research articles every week

• Drive to a team meeting in a different city

• Answer the same questions over and over

When you could…• Collaborate on a document by emailing it back and

forth.

Collaborate on a document online

articles every week

Setup an RSS feed that automatically

tracks new articles/grants

When you could…• Drive to a team meeting in a different city

Join an online team meeting

When you could…• Answer the same question over and over

Set up a blog or wiki to help with communications

Web 2.0: Power to the People

Web 2.0: refers to the Web’s capitalization on

people as content providers

It is about people-to-people conversations and

information sharing

It is about a participation

culture

It is about a flexible online

work environment

It is about NOT having silos of work

“A Day in the Life”

Jane: Web 2.0 worker extraordinaire.

“A Day in the Life”

8 am—Jane plugs her iPod into her car and listens to podcasts on the way to work. She selects a global climate change podcast from NASA that she downloaded last night and a JetStreaming podcast from NPR.

“A Day in the Life”

9 am—Jane updates her blog, sharing reflections, thoughts, and strategies for what she’s doing this week. The blog allows feedback and visibility to program participants, stakeholders, and colleagues around the world.

“A Day in the Life”

10 am—Jane checks her feedreader for updates to blogs she’s following, as well as new results on a Google News search for “Global Climate Change” and a search for grants in her area of youth education.

“A Day in the Life”

10:30—Jane glances through her latest Twitter updates. She notices some interesting items from the UM News Service as well as a few posts of interest from fellow youth educators.

“A Day in the Life”

11 am—Begins work on her current project, new curriculum on climate change for this spring. She starts by setting up a wiki and sharing it with her team. Everyone can now edit the curriculum outline and add documents, photos, and links to the wiki.

She adds the wiki to her feedreader to track when it is updated by her colleagues.

“A Day in the Life”

12 noon—Instant messages an office colleague, telling her to stop over when she is at a good stopping point for lunch.

“A Day in the Life”

1:00—Writes and records an introduction to the global warming unit to accompany the new curriculum. This podcast will be shared online to promote the unit and engage parents and stakeholders in the discussion.

“A Day in the Life”

3:00—Using photo sharing sites online that utilize the “creative commons” license, she finds a number of good photos to use in presentations and materials. She posts links to them on the wiki for use in the curriculum development.

“A Day in the Life”

4:00—Sets up an online meeting for two days from now so that the team can share their progress and brainstorm more ideas.
