Identification of the target audience and the intended purpose of the animation. (Describe how each scene meets the target audience and how it is fit for purpose)

My intended audience is a young teenage audience, mainly 12-15. I have made sure to include plenty of colourful items to appeal to the style and interests of this generation. The Main purpose of this animation is to promote healthy living for a charity.

In the first scene we see the animation opening on a city, using a light blue sky with a nice shining sun. This is a simple city scene that gives a general idea as to where our character is starting. This uses simple colours to create a beautiful outdoor scene in a big city, as we see large tower buildings in the background and a bright sun shining down. We can hear nice birds chirping and light cars driving in the background

The second scene shows our character walking down a pavement just like we all do on a daily basis; cars can be heard driving past as our character is walking. Our character is shown as a cheerful person. I hope that the teenagers watching this animation will be able to relate to this character being cheerful on a nice sunny day.

The third scene skips to a few hours later and our character is inside a bar. This is where our character is presented with a choice; an irresponsible or a responsible one. We see him chose the irresponsible one and carry on drinking. The audience can relate as they may have had choices to make in their lives which have consequences.

Over the next 3 scenes we see our person leave the bar in a dark and dreary night, stumbling about as he attempts to make his way home. He hurts himself on some bushes and stumbles onto the road, only to be hit by a car. Teenagers are constantly reminded of road safety, so this will only add to the reminder to be safe when crossing/near roads. We hear people chatting in the background in the Bar, cars driving on the walk home and horns beeping as he is hit by a car.

We see our person wake up in a hospital, a reminder that plays on the heartstrings, that life is fragile and can be ended by just one mistake. It is hopeful that this reminds the teenagers to be careful and not to be careless in decisions. The Hospital is a very sterile environment, we can hear beeping and hospital background sounds during this scene. We see mild cuts and bruises on our character as he is lying in bed.

In the next few frames, we see how our person could have ended his night more differently, by stopping drinking when he reached his limit, got into his car and gone home, relaxing before bed. It is commonly known that Teenagers enjoy sleep but also that if a Teenager wakes up on a school day with a hangover, it will impact their studies. Sombre music plays as our character reflects on his night and is in his hospital bed.

A description of the requirement from the brief

In the assignment brief we have been asked to create an animation to promote Healthy Living. The charity requesting the animation has asked for it to be 30 seconds or more. The animation should have visual and audio aides including movement of characters, sound effects and environmental sounds that match the background.

A storyboard (with at least 12 panels) showing the different characters, object and audio assets, and how these all combine in the animation

I was going to start the animation at night but decided to show before the character goes to the bar after work instead. I changed it from Night to Day. I feel this gives the animation a before and after effect, showing the viewer before the character had to make a choice

I was going to add more people to the background and around the main character but I felt this would distract the viewers away from the main character and we want to focus on the choices he makes in this scene as it is important to this animations purpose of responsible drinking

I was going to have blood in this scene but I felt it distracted the viewer from the purpose of this animation. I removed the blood and instead just show the scene as our character being knocked over.

I felt that too much gore would also distract the audience as well as reduce the age range in which this can be shown to.

I planned to have this as a dream sequence but felt it would have more of an impact as an imagination sequence with the character reflecting on how his night could have been different.

Background Music (AUDIO)

Starting at the beginning of the animation and continuing throughout, intermixed with the other audio files.Minor sound adjustments made, so that at specific points, the secondary audio can be heard over this.

I have yet to decide which background music to use, I will be finding something appropriate for each scene.

Heard throughout the animation, this is a simplistic melody which will keep the attention of the targeted audience.

Birds chirping (AUDIO) Started at the start of scene 1, this is the chirping of 1 or 2 birds, heard in the distance as they fly past some buildings.

This audio will fade in at the start of scene 1 and fade out at the end of scene 1

This is a very light bird chirping audio for the first scene, to indicate and give the feel that it is day time.

Driving (AUDIO) Heard in Scene 1,5 and 9. Each audio asset will only last a few seconds each.

Each will fade in and fade out slowly as it plays on each scene.

This is a light driving sound which is heard faintly in the first scene and more prominent in the other 2

Walking (AUDIO) Heard in scenes 2,4 and 5. Will last only as the character is walking along the path.

Will be prominently loud as the character is close to the screen.

Light stepping sounds which are designed to match our characters steps as they go along.

Cups (AUDIO) Heard in scene 3 as the Will only appear once or twice in this

character is drinking at the bar and placing his cup down on the bar.

scene as the character picks up and puts down his drink.

Bushes (AUDIO) Heard in scene 4.Slight rustling as the character brushes against it

Will only be slightly noisy as we are more focused on the character

Only heard in scene 3 and only when our character interacts with it.

Tire Screeching (AUDIO)

Heard in scene 5. Very loud as it is a quick stopping sounds

Only in scene 5 as our car has to come to a fast stop to stop hitting the character from his drunken stumble into the road.

Horn honking (AUDIO) Heard in scene 6. Very loud and drags into scene 7 while fading away

Because the car stopped very quickly the horn is honking because the person was hoping our character would hear it and move out of the way before they got hit and set the alarm off.

Medical Monitor (AUDIO)

Heard as our character lays next to the medical monitor in hospital.

Heard fading into the next scene.

Heard quite loudly as our character is right next to the monitor.

Imagination (AUDIO) A faint noise as the character begins dreaming.

Faint audio, only heard in scene 8

Fabric wrinkling (AUDIO)

Wrinkling sound as our character sits down in scenes 10 and 11.Only a slight sound as fabric doesn’t make loud sounds.

Only a quick audio sound as the character sits on his sofa in scene 10 and lays down on his bed in scene 11.

Richard Collins Unit 4 Creating digital animation

By using a storyboard I was able to layout the plan in the storyboard, placing the assets in the places I wanted them to be, by doing this when I or someone else comes to animating this, it is easier to remember and place where each item needs to go.

By using an asset table I am able to list all the individual items that are in this animation, enabling either myself or someone else to know what asset is to be placed onto the animation scenes.

With both of these added together, it should make when I come to do the final animation a lot easier, with knowing where and when to place each individual asset onto the stage.

I chose my current design because I felt it met with the audience I had planned for it to appeal towards. My main character has been given a simple name, which can be related to by many. This is a generic character which is implied that it can be anyone and what happens to the character in the animation can also happen to anyone.

I have chosen to make my animation simple, not just because it is easy to make but because I do not want the viewer to be distracted by fancy graphics or anything too visually stimulating that would create the idea that this is not a serious animation.

I have chosen to go with simplistic backgrounds, such as blue skies or dark night skies instead of having detailed images as backgrounds.

I have used a storyboard format to layout and plan my animation. I feel this is easiest for me when I come to animating the actual design. The storyboard shows where each asset is needed to be in each scene, giving a general idea of how the animation needs to be laid out.

I feel my animation designs meet the purpose because they are relatable. The charity wanted an animation on a Healthy Living subject, to which I designed my animation on Responsible Drinking. I feel as if many teenagers, in my targeted audience range, have had troubles with drinking and may have made bad decisions while under the influence of alcohol. This animation clearly outlines a probable reality of drinking irresponsibly and the consequences of such actions.

The end of the animation provides an alternate ending in which better decisions are made, leading to a more positive outcome. Making good decisions about alcohol consumption is the main point of this animation, which it has been stated many times, that people can consume certain amounts of alcohol while remaining perfectly healthy by all standards.
