Last week we were learning about different places people live and that where an animal lives is called a habitat. We learned that habitats are areas where animals build their homes and are able to get the food and water they need to live. On Friday we learned about people and animals who live in the Rainforest.

Today we are going to learn about animals that live in other types of forest areas. Forests refer to heavily wooded areas. Animals in the forest often live in two types of homes, ones on the ground and ones in trees:

· Animals that use homes on the ground live in dens or caves which are made from digging holes in the ground or finding large opening in rocks.

· Animals that live in caves and dens in the forests can be large cats, bears, foxes, wolves, coyote, and small rodents like rabbits.

· Animals that build their homes in trees do so by making holes in the trees or building nests on the branches of the trees.

· Animals that live in are most commonly birds and small rodents.

In areas where the weather changes with the seasons from warm in the spring and summer to cold in the winter and fall these forest animals use their homes to help protect them from the cold weather and store food. In the winter, many forest animals will hibernate which means they will go into their homes and sleep for long periods of time. Bears use their caves to hibernate for most of the winter.

Pretend Play: Students will pretend to be birds that are migrating to a warmer climate for the winter season. Help students pretend to fly from one room of the house to a different room in the house where they can use sheets, blankets, and towels to pretend to build a nest.

Science/discovery: students can use blankets chairs and pillows to build a fort or bear cave. How many sides do we need and what can we put on top to create a shelter that makes it so that the outside world cannot see into our shelter.

Fine Motor/Manipulatives: Working with playdough and blocks to build different types of shelters for animals and people.

Writing: Work on drawing simple shapes on your white board or pieces of paper. Work on writing/tracing letters of the month: d/i/u/z. Work on writing/tracing students' names.

Art: Student can color a pre-cut bear picture and help cut a paper plate in half then color the paper plate black as the bears’ den. They can then glue their bear in the den and pull apart cotton balls or ripped up toilet paper and glue it on top the den as snow.

Literacy: Books- students will sit with a parent and be taught book handling and care, turning pages, attending to 2D images, and attending to a story being read to them. Work on picture identification and what and where questions while looking at books /Zz/.

Book suggestion (Spanish): https://www.getepic.com/app/read/58590

Phonics: This week’s letter is /Zz/. Go over how to make the letter sound and

Play the Bounce Patrol to review the letter sound and some things that start with the letter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HysVxhemAe4

Math: Number Recognition/ Identification

· You can create 2 sets of 0-10 flash cards:

lay out a field of 3 and ask your little learner to point to a number

or match.

· Switch out numbers and repeat with new numbers. (recommend starting with match. If your little learner is able to successfully match all the numbers move to point. If your little learner is verbal, you can hold up number while asking “what number is this”)

Yesterday we learned about another type of habitat where animals build their homes. Today we are going to learn about the Artic. The artic is very, very cold with snow and ice all around. There are no trees. Some animals call this place home such as polar bears and penguins. and ice. Polar bears have thick fur to keep them warm in the artic. Penguins too, have thick skin and layers of fat to protect them from the cold.

People can also live in the arctic. People who live in the artic build homes called Igloos. Igloos are made out of snow and ice. They use the snow and ice to make bricks and stack them together. Igloos are round and dome shaped.

Music and Movement: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOTNZN2wmlM

Pretend Play: Students will pretend they live in the arctic. Students will pretend to boil ice to make water, to make tea and soup to help keep themselves warm in the arctic. Students can use pillows to pretend to build an igloo.

Science/discovery: Students will explore and attempt to use ice cubes to build their own igloos.

Art: Using a blue piece of paper that has a pre-drawn igloo shape, students will pick up pre-cut square and rectangle pieces of paper one by one and glue it onto the paper to create an igloo.

Writing: Work with your child on following directions for stopping and starting. Make a large dot or draw a star in the shape of a square and +. Give your child the direction to draw a line down and show them where to start and stop to make the shapes.

Literacy: Books- Your child will sit with a parent and be taught book handling and care, turning pages, attending to 2D images, and attending to a story being read to them. Work on picture identification and what and where questions while looking at books. Work on finding words that begin with the letter of the week. Letter /Zz/.

Book suggestion (English and Spanish): https://www.getepic.com/app/read/44205

Phonics: This week’s letter is /Zz/. Review the letter name of the letter and the letter sound with your child.

z for zebra. Help students cut out an /z/ for the letter of the week craft. Help students cut out strips of black paper. Help students trace the letter once it has been cut out. Have your student draw the eyes and mouth of the zebra. Then have your student work on their fine motor pincer grasp as they pick up the pieces to glue them together to create the zebra’s stripes and tail.

Math: Practice identifying colors using crayons and markers. Place out 3 different markers/crayons and give students the direction to select a specific color. Give students the option to use the crayon/marker to color or give the direction to identify a different color.

Yesterday we learned about the artic as another type of habitat where animals and people build their homes. Today we will learn about rivers and water ways. Rivers and water ways are habitats to many different animals including fish, bugs, and other animals that live in water.

People can also live on rivers and waterways. Homes that go on rivers and waterways are called house boats. They can float on the surface of the water and move when the people want or need them to. House boats are typically smaller than houses and can be made out of wood and other materials that will help them float on water.

Music and Movement https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kDycTZxGU0

Pretend/kitchen Play: Students can pretend that their couch or bed is a houseboat. They can pretend to drive the houseboat or use sticks or paddles to pretend to make it move. Students can pretend to fish over the side of the couch or bed using a sheet or a blanket.

Fine Motor/Manipulatives: Practice cutting playdough or paper with scissors. Work on hand grasp and opening and closing scissors.

Art: Using a paper plate, the teacher will cut it in half. Students will cut a triangle. Students will tear tissue paper and glue it into the half circle paper plate. Students will glue a popsicle stick in the middle of the triangle and glue it into the paper plate.

Writing: Work on drawing simple shapes on your white board or pieces of paper. Work on writing/tracing letters of the month: d/ I / u / z. Work on writing/tracing students' names.

Literacy: Books- Sit with your child to look at books. Work on book handling and care, turning pages, attending to 2D images, and attending to a story being read to them. Phonics: This week’s letter is /Zz/. Review the letter sound with your learner. Students will walk around their homes with an adult to help with identifying objects in the home that start with our letter of the week.

Math: Practice identifying colors using crayons and markers. Place out 3 different markers/crayons and give students the direction to select a specific color. Give students the option to use the crayon/marker to color or give the direction to identify a different color.

Mix the in the bowl and have the student draw the letters out and match them to the large letters on the flash cards. Say each letters name as they are pulling them from the bowl and matching. Encourage student to say letter if speech skills are present.
