Last week, we explored our homes and some animals that may live with us. Today, we will be exploring animals and their homes in an attempt to compare them to ours. Today, we will view an informative chart and see where animals live in the winter. Why do animals move during cold weather? What is hibernation?

TuesdayDate: 12/15

Yesterday we began discussing animals and hibernation. Today, we will be digging deeper and learn more about bears and their needs. Bear hibernate in caves. Why? Where are caves located? What is a cave? After our discussion, we will be making a craft, depicting a bear hibernating in a cave.

Art: Dip leaves in paint and create a textured painting.

Writing: Dip fingers in paint and trace or write letters based on skill.

Literacy/Library: Children will walk around the classroom identifying objects that start with letter u.

Dramatic Play: Build an animal home. Look for items around the room to include in the home. Think about how an animal might build their own home.Math: Sort animals into two categories: farm animals and zoo animals- count the animals and then see which group has more animals than the other.Science: Use the play animals and build a house for them. How big or small does it have to be?

Blocks: Use blocks or Legos to build a farm or zoo for animals to live.

WednesdayDate: 12/16

Now that we have some background knowledge on some winter animals, we will be attempting to compare animal homes to our homes. We will create a chart and children will have an opportunity to place their ideas on the chart.

Art: Use different shapes to create a barn house or farm.

Writing: Use magnet letters to match the letters in your name or other vocabulary words. Write down the letters

Afterwards, we will hang the chart in our classroom. you find or use.

Literacy/Library: Children will use pictures to create a collage of words that start with letter i.

Dramatic Play: Pretend to be an animal hibernating in a cave. Build the cave with some blankets or other items around the room.Math: Use dot paint to represent the number 12. Place 12 dots on the paper or trace the number nine with dots.Science: Sort animals by where they live: on the farm, at the zoo, or in the wild.Blocks: Build buildings and houses of different sizes, such as small, medium, and large.

ThursdayDate: 12/17

Yesterday we began to discuss some different types of animal homes and some similarities and differences to our homes. Where else might animals live? Animals might live on the farm on in the zoo. Are these animals the same ones that may live in the wild? Let us explore the different types of animals and their homes. Today, we will build a barn and see what type of animals live there. We will read “Old McDonald Had a Farm” to help us learn some of the farm animals.

Art: Create different homes for animals such as a fishbowl or ocean for sea animals.Writing: Use white boards and dry-erase markers to practice forming letters, shapes, and numbers.

Literacy/Library: Children will use the letter book and music to review the special letter’s sound and words that begin with letter u.

Computer: Play a letter identification skill game.

Math: Experiment with color mixing. What do I get when I mix two colors? Another option for math can be to make a clock since our number of the week is 12.

Wrapping up our week, we will refer back to the chart we made on Monday. We will review some of the different types of family homes and think about other places animals might live. Animals might also live at the zoo. Today, we will think about and explore some zoo animals and learn about the homes they live in at the zoo.

Dramatic Play: Practice feeding animals and giving them water. What other items does an animal need?

Science: Build a house with Legos or Blocks and practice balancing them for a strong foundation.

Computer: Children can choose from Letter identification Game or Counting Game.Blocks: Try to build an RV or houseboat. What might we need that is different than a regular house.

Math: Look at our color chart and try to mix the colors based on the chart. Try to make new colors.
