Year 4 Home Learning

Week Beginning 6th July 2020

A note from the Year 4 teachers…

Hello Year 4,

We have really enjoyed receiving the fantastic home learning that many of you have shared with us again, this week. We really do love seeing your work, or just hearing about what you have been up to.

We are looking forward to seeing your modern sustainable village designs based on what you have learnt about the sustainable Saxons, in our project activities. This week, you also have an intriguing science investigation to discover what happens to your teeth if you do not look after them properly.

Have an amazing week of learning.

English

Daily Deliberate Practice:

Each school day, aim to spend about 20 minutes on each of these activities:

1) Reading (on your own or to an adult).

2) Practise spellings on Spelling Shed.

Weekly Learning Activity: Planning Your Discussion Texts

This week you are going to choose and research your own topic, before planning to write a balanced discussion.

Start by watching this video to remind you of the key features of a discussion text: https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/how-to-write-a-discussion-text/zfhqxyc

Activity 1

Firstly, you will need to choose a statement to discuss (to give balanced opposing viewpoints on).

You may want to choose one of the following statements or think of a topic of your own:

● It is better to be a child than an adult.

● Pets should be kept in school.

Page 2: €¦ · Web view2020/07/06  · Year 4 Home Learning Week Beginning 6 th July 2020 A note from the Year 4 teachers… Hello Year 4, We have really enjoyed receiving the fantastic

● Homework is a bad idea.

● Winter is more fun than summer.

Activity 2

Next, you need to think about the arguments for and against your chosen statement. You are likely to have your own opinions and ideas, but we would also like you to ask the opinions of others, to support your discussion. You might choose to ask adults at home, siblings or friends to find out their opinions on your topic. You may also find it useful to research and make notes of facts which support both sides of the discussion.

Remember, for each argument you make, you need to have a relevant counter argument which gives the opposing view to the original point.

Activity 3

Make clear notes on the ideas you have heard and any extra information that you have found out. You might want to use a grid like the one below to make your notes (look back at last week’s Home Learning to remind yourself of how this could be used). Make sure you have ideas/notes to support each for and against point, to enable you to write an informative and balanced discussion next week.

Example note-taking grid:

We have included an example pair of opinions for one of the statements above.

For Against

Example: It is better to be a child than an adult.

Children aren’t usually expected to have jobs so they have more time to play and have fun.

Example: It is better to be a child than an adult.

Many adults enjoy their jobs and being a grown-up means that they can choose how they spend their free time.

Keep all your notes safe, ready for next week’s activity.

● Multiplication Practice Using Known Facts in a Part-Part-Whole Model:

● Last week we began to look at the part-

part-whole model, where we used related known multiplication facts to calculate an unknown answer.

● This week we are going to use the

related known facts to answer the word problems. We will also write out the equations in the same way as last week.

● To answer the above question we would write the equation like this:

4 x 5 = 3 x 5 + 1 x 5

3 x 5 = 15

1 x 5 = 5

15 + 5 = 20

Project: THE ANGLO-SAXONS - Sustainable Saxons

Your Activity: Sustainable Modern Anglo-Saxon Life

This week we are going to be answering the following question: What lessons on sustainability can we learn from the Anglo-Saxons?

Over the last seven weeks, we have been looking at the different aspects of Anglo-Saxon life and comparing their way of life to ours today. We have looked at villages and settlements, houses, food,

clothes, and entertainment such as storytelling, riddles, games and music.

Activity 1

What have you learnt about the sustainability of the Anglo-Saxons and are we as sustainable in modern life? Explain your answer with evidence to support your reasoning.

Activity 2

This week we would like you to design (and maybe make a model of) a modern village, using sustainable materials where possible, for your villagers to live a sustainable lifestyle.

You can choose how you want to show or create your design.

Page 6: €¦ · Web view2020/07/06  · Year 4 Home Learning Week Beginning 6 th July 2020 A note from the Year 4 teachers… Hello Year 4, We have really enjoyed receiving the fantastic

When planning your village and thinking about sustainability, you may want to consider:

● Where you will position the village (to provide water, wood, land for crops and animals).

● Which combination of modern materials and natural resources will you use to build with?

● Will the gardens need a designated area for vegetables, fruit or animals?

● Will you be able to produce essential items (such as clothes) in the village? Where will this take

place? How will you make sure this is sustainable?

● Where will your villagers meet to be entertained?

● What natural resources will you need to be near, to maintain sustainability? How will you replenish

these?

You may have other ideas of how to be sustainable in today’s world.

Science: Digestive System

This week we are going to continue looking at teeth. We will discover how our teeth can

Page 7: €¦ · Web view2020/07/06  · Year 4 Home Learning Week Beginning 6 th July 2020 A note from the Year 4 teachers… Hello Year 4, We have really enjoyed receiving the fantastic

become damaged and think about how we can protect them. Remember, we only have one set of permanent teeth to last the whole of adult life, so it is very important that we look after them.

What damages our teeth?

To find out about tooth decay have a look at this website: https://www.childrensuniversity.manchester.ac.uk/learning-activities/science/teeth-and-eating/looking-after-your-teeth/

Bacteria like to feed on the sugars left behind in our mouths and when they do they leave behind acid which can damage our teeth.

Which foods might be harmful to our teeth. Why?

It isn’t just food which damages our teeth, drinks do too.

Which drinks do you think are the most harmful to our teeth? Why?

This week we are going to set up an investigation to find out which drinks damage our teeth. Over the course of the week we will make observations, then in the following week we will write up our experiment.

Which drink causes the least damage to our teeth (eggshell)?

An eggshell protects the egg, a bit like the enamel on our teeth protects the living part inside. So we will be using eggs to represent our teeth.

For this experiment you are going to need 6 hard-boiled eggs (ask an adult to help you with this), and six cups with different drinks in them (possibly: - fizzy drink, milk, water, tea, coffee, juice, squash).

Activity One - Planning and setting up the investigation

To set up your investigation, you will need to place each boiled egg into a cup or container and cover at least half of the egg in the liquid.

Page 8: €¦ · Web view2020/07/06  · Year 4 Home Learning Week Beginning 6 th July 2020 A note from the Year 4 teachers… Hello Year 4, We have really enjoyed receiving the fantastic

Use the planning grid below to think through how you will carry out your investigation and consider what might happen.

Activity Two - Collecting your information

Create a table for your results. You will need to check your eggs daily and record your observations in your table. This information will help you write your conclusion next week. When creating your table think about which observations you planned to make (when you wrote the planning grid).

Leave the eggs in a safe place and remember to check on your eggs every day for 5 days.

After your 5 days, lay all the eggs next to each other and take a photo to remind you of what happened.

Page 9: €¦ · Web view2020/07/06  · Year 4 Home Learning Week Beginning 6 th July 2020 A note from the Year 4 teachers… Hello Year 4, We have really enjoyed receiving the fantastic

Challenge

Using your ideas from your planning document, write a prediction about what you expect to happen to each egg and why you think this. Try to explain your thinking using scientific vocabulary and what you already know about keeping teeth healthy.
