A และ AN เรยกวา Indefinite Articles ( Indefinite แปลวา ไม ชเฉพาะ) ทง a และ an มความหมายเหมอนกน อนหนง สงหนง ไมจำากดตายตวแนนอนลงไป ใช“ ” “ ”นำาหนาคำานามนบได เอกพจนทไมระบลงไปชดเจนวาเปนอนไหน สงไหนกนแน

จากรปขางบนนกเรยนคงจะสรปไดถงความแตกตางของ a และ an กลาวคอ A ใชนำาหนาคำานามเอกพจนทขนตนดวยเสยงพยญชนะ และ เสยงพยญชนะ -ขนตนดวยเสยงพยญชนะ เชน a dog , a book , a man , a house - ขนตนดวยสระ (a,e,i,o,u) แตสระนนออกเสยงพยญชนะ เชน

An ใชนำาหนาคำาเอกพจนทขนตนดวยสระ และเสยงสระ-ขนตนดวยสระ (a,e,i,o,u) เชน

an ant, an arrow(ลกธน), an American car(รถอเมรกน) an egg, an eel(ปลาไหล) ,an elephant an idea (ความคด), an insect(แมลง) ,an Indian girl(เดกผหญงอนเดย) an orange, an onion (หวหอม) an umbrella, an ugly man (ผชายทนาเกลยด) -ขนตนดวยพยญชนะ “h” แตบางคำากไมออกเสยง “h” กลบออกเสยงสระทตามมา จงตองใช an นำาหนา

หลกในการใช a และ an

1. A และ An มกใชนำาหนานามเอกพจนทเพงจะกลาวถงเปนครงแรก โดยไมชเฉพาะเจาะจง

ตวอยางประโยค I have a friend. ฉนมเพอนคนหนง My aunt has a white cat. ปาของฉนม

แมวขาวตวหนงในกรณทตองการกลาวถงสงของหลายอยางโดยไมชเฉพาะ

เจาะจง เรากใชรปพหพจนของคำานามนนโดยไมตองมคำาใดๆนำาหนา แตถาตองการระบถงจำานวนกอาจใชคำาบอกจำานวนนำาหนาได

ตวอยางประโยค I have friends. ฉนมเพอน (หลายคน)

He is an old man. เขาเปนคนแก A parrot is a bird. นกแกวเปนนกชนดหนง (นก

แกวตวใดตวหนงกได) A hero is a brave man. วรบรษเปนคนกลาหาญ

(วรบรษคนใดคนหนงกได)

การเปลยนประโยคเหลานใหเปนพหพจน กใหใชรปพหพจนของนามลอยๆโดยไมตองมคำาใดๆนำาหนา

ตวอยางประโยค Thailand and Malaysia are free countries.

ประเทศไทยและมาเลเซยเปนประเทศเอกราช They are old men. พวกนนเปนคนแก Parrots are birds. นกแกว(ทงหลาย)

เปนนก(จำาพวกหนง) Heroes are brave men. วรบรษ(ทงหลาย) เปน

คนกลาหาญ(จำาพวกหนง)Note : ใหนกเรยนเปรยบเทยบประโยค 2 ชดนอกครง

A parrot is a bird. กบ Parrots are birds. A hero is a brave man. กบ Heroes are

brave men.จะเหนวาความหมายเหมอนกนทกอยาง จะใชแบบใดแบบหนงกได แต

หามนำาทง 2 มาปะปนหรอสบสนกน เชนผด A parrot is birds.ผด A hero is brave men.และถาเราใชนามนบไมไดในประโยคทำานองน เราจะใชเอกพจนไดแบบ

เดยว เชนGold is a precious thing. ทองคำาเปนสงทมคาTime is money. เวลาเปนเงนเปนทอง

เราไมใช a, an กบ gold, time หรอ money เพราะทง 3 คำานนเปนคำานามนบไมไดซงไมตองม a, an นำาหนา และไมสามารถเปลยนรปเปนพหพจนได

ทเพงกลาวถงเปนครงแรก และไมชเฉพาะเจาะจง มความหมายเทากบหนง (one) เชนI want a piece of paper. ฉนตองการกระดาษหนงแผน

(ไมชเฉพาะเจาะจง แผนใดกได)2.A และ An ไมใชในกรณตอไปน

2.1 ไมใชนำาหนาคำานามพหพจน เชนCars are very expensive. รถมราคาแพง (รถโดยทวๆ

ไป)She does not like milk. เธอไมชอบดมนม (milk เปน

คำานามนบไมได)

การใช A, An ในกรณพเศษ1.เราใช a, an นำาหนาอาชพ เชน

Jim is an engineer. จมเปนวศวกรJohn is an artist. จอหนเปนศลปนJane is a doctor. เจนเปนหมอ

ในกรณนเราไมสามารถละ a, an ทงไปได2.ใช a, an เพอบอกเชอชาต เชน

John is an American. จอหนเปนชาวอเมรกน (คนหนง)

Jane is a French woman. เจนเปนชาวฝรงเศส (คนหนง)

3.ใช a, an เพอบอกศาสนา เชน He is a catholic. เขาเปนคาทอลก (นบถอศาสนาครสต) I am a Buddhist. ฉนเปนชาวพทธ

4.ใช a, an บอกตำาแหนงทางการเมอง เชน Mr. Smith is a Socialist. คณสมธอยพรรคสงคมนยม

Note : ตงแตขอ 1-4 ถาประธานของประโยคเปนเอกพจน คำานามหลง verb to be จะเปนเอกพจน (ม a, an นำาหนา) และถาประธานของประโยคเปนพหพจน คำานามหลง verb to be กตองเปนพหพจนตามไปดวย และไมตองม a, an นำาหนา เชน

They are Americans.Jerry and Robert are doctors.We are good Buddhist.Those people are Socialist.\

5.ใช a, an กบจำานวน หนง ซงเราไมสามารถเจาะจง จะเปนอนไหน“ ”กได เชน

I’d like an apple. ผมอยากได (ซอ) แอปเป ลสกหนงผล

ในกรณน เราสามารถใช a, an กบนามนบไมไดกได เชนI’d like a coffee. ผมขอกาแฟสกถวยหนง (ทหนง)

ครบ6. ใช a,an กบโรคหรออาการเจบปวยบางชนดเชน

You’ve got a cold เธอเปนหวด

The problem has given me a headache.ปญหานนทำาใหฉนปวดศรษะ The gril has a fever.เดกหญงคนนนเปนไขแตอาการหรอโรคบางอยางจะไมม a’an นำาหนา เชน mumps(คางทม) ,flu (ไขหวดใหญ)และ Measles(โรคหด) แตใชกบ the ไดเปน the mumps, the flu และ the measles สวนอาการปวดฟน toothache จะใชกบ a กได หรอไมม article นำาหนากได

7. ใช a, an นำาหนานามเอกพจน เมอแปลวา หนวยละ หรอ บอกถง“ ”อตรา(ความเรว,ความถ,ราคา) ตอหนงหนวย เชน

These apple are fory bath a kilo.แอปเป ลเหลานกโลกรมละ 40 บาทHe comes to see me three times a week.เขามาหาฉนอาทตยละ 3 ครงThe train is going at fifty miles an hour.รถไฟกำาลงแลนดวยความเรวชวโมงละ 50 ไมล

Definite Article : TheThe ใชนำาหนาคำานามไดทกชนด ทงนามนบไดและนบไมได ทง

นามเอกพจนและพหพจน และคำานามนนจะขนตนดวยสระหรอพยญชนะกได

แตเมอ the นำาหนาคำาทขนตนดวยเสยงสระ จะออกเสยง ด“ ” เชน

The orange , the ant , the honest men

หลกการใช TheThe เรยกวา Definite Article (Definite แปลวา เจาะจง

, ชดเจน) เราใช the นำาหนาคำานามทแสดงถงการชเฉพาะ ไมใชนามอนใดอนหนงทวๆไป

1.ใช the นำาหนานามทเปนทรจกกนระหวางผพดและผฟง หรอเมอนามนนไดเคยถกกลาวถงมากอนแลว และผพดถงนามนน ซำาเปนครงท 2 หรอครงตอๆไป

ตวอยางประโยค :I watch a concert and film on TV. The concert

is good but I do not like the film.ในประโยคแรกใช a concert a film เพราะเปนคำาทเพงกลาว

ถงเปนครงแรก สวนในประโยคหลงใช The concert กบ the film เพราะ เปนการกลาวซำาเปนครงท 2 และเปนการชเฉพาะเจาะจง

วาหมายถงเฉพาะ concert และ film ทไดกลาวถงในประโยคแรกเทานน

An old man and old woman lived in a small hut by a river near a forest. One da y the old woman left the hut and went into the forest. The old man went to the river to catch fish

2.ใช the นำาหนานามทมขอความมาขยายชดเจน เปนการเนนและชเฉพาะเจาะจงวาผพดหมายถงสงไหนอนไหน ลองเปรยบเทยบประโยคตอไปน

Dogs usually do not like children. สนขไมชอบเดกๆ

The dogs in this house like the children who wear white shirts.

สนขในบานนชอบเดกซงสวมเสอสขาวในประโยคแรกคำา dogs และ children เปนคำาพหพจน ไมม

a,an หรอ the นำาหนาเพราะเปนการกลาวทวๆไป วา สนข (ทใดๆ กตามหรอทวไป) มกไมชอบเดก (เดกโดยทวไป คนไหน พวกไหนกตาม) ไมไดเปนการชเฉพาะเจาะจงถงสนขตวใด หรอเดกคนใดโดยเฉพาะแตในประโยคทใช 2 ใช the dogs (ม the) และ the children (ม the) เพราะเปนการกลาวชเฉพาะวาสนขในบานนเทานน (ม the house มาขยายคำานาม dogs) และชเฉพาะวาเดกทสวมขาว

เทานน (ม who wear white shirts มาขยายคำานาม children) ไมไดกลาวถงสนขทอนหรอพวกเดกพวกอน The school in this village is very beautiful. โรงเรยนทหมบานนสวยงามมาก (มขอความ in this village มาขยายคำานาม school เปนการชเฉพาะเจาะจงวาเฉพาะโรงเรยนในหมบานนเทานน) 3. ใช the นำาหนานามซงชเฉพาะเนองจากผพดและผฟงรกนอยแลววาหมายถงสงไหน อาจรไดจากขอความทอยแวดลอมคำานน หรออาจหมายถงสงทอยตอหนาของผพดและผฟงในขณะนน ตวอยางประโยค Please open the door. โปรดปดประตหนอย (ทงผพดและผฟงรกนวาหมายถงประตไหน ซงกคอประตทอยตอหนาในขณะนน) Put this bag in the car. เอาถงนไปใสไวในรถ( รกนอยแลววาหมายถงรถคนไหน ) Give me the paper. สงกระดาษนนมาใหฉน ( รกนอยแลววาหมายถง กระดาษทผฟงกำาลงถออย ) 4. ใช the นำาหนาสงทมเพยงอยางเดยว เปนสงทรกนอยแลว ไดแก the sun ดวงอาทตย the earth โลก the moon ดวงจนทร the world โลก

the universe จกรวาล the north ทศเหนอ the east ทศตะวนออก the south ทศใต the west ทศตะวนตก the sky ทองฟา the right ทางดานขวา the left ทางดานซาย the first อนแรก the last อนสดทาย the White House ทำาเนยบขาว the President ประธานาธบด (พดในประเทศใดหมายถงประธานาธบดของประเภทนน ) the Premier, the Prime Minister นายกรฐมนตร ( พดในพระเทศใดหมายถงนายกรฐมนตรของประเทศนน ) the king-the Queen พระมหากษตรย-พระราชน ( พดในประเทศใด หมายถงพระมหากษตรย-พระราชของประเทศนน ) 5. ใช the นำาหนาคำาคณศพททเปนการเปรยบเทยบขนสงสด ( superlative degree ) และคำาแสดงลำาดบท ( ordinal number ) เชน the best, the worst, the biggest, the most beautiful, the first, the second, the third, the last 6. ใช the กบสวนหนงของวน เชน in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening ตวอยางประโยค

We do homework in the evening. เราทำาการบานกนในตอนเยน Birds leave their nests in the morning. นกออกจากรงในตอนเชา 7. ใช the + adjective มความหมายถงคนประเภทนนทงหมด ตวอยางประโยค The poor need food and clothing. คนจน ( ทงหมด ) ตองการอาหารและเสอผา The young are happier than the old. คนหนมสาว ( ทงหมด ) มความสขมากวาคนสงอาย ( ทงหมด )

สงเกตวาคำากรยาทใชตองเปนรปพหพจนดวย The blind cannot see. คนตาบอด ( ทงหลาย ) มองไมเหน 8. ใช the ในการอานวนท เชน

June 13th อานวา June the thirteenth หรอ the thirteen of June

การใช THE กบชอเฉพาะ

ตามปกตเราไมใช article ใดๆ กบชอเฉพาะ เชน Bangkok, Suda, Jack แตเราใช the กบชอเฉพาะตอไปน

ตวอยางประโยค Do you know the Smiths ? คณรจกคนในครอบครวสมธไหม The Browns live next door to us. ครอบครวบราวนอาศยตดกบเรา ใหสงเกตวาการใชดงกลาว ชอนามสกลเปนรปพหพจน ( เตม s เสมอ ) และมกใชกบกรยาพหพจนเสมอ แตถาเปนชอคนๆเดยวไมตองเตม ตวอยางประโยค Mrs. Smith is going to London. นายสมทกำาลงจะไปลอนดอน

2.ใช the กบชอชนชาต เมอหมายถงคนเชอชาตตางๆ คนในชาตนนทกๆ คนหรอโดยทวๆ ไปโดยใช the + adjective ทแสดงถงสญชาต ( มกเปนรปพหพจน ) เชนThe Americans ชาวอเมรกนทกๆ คนหรอทวๆ ไปThe Italians ชาวตาเลยนทกๆ คนหรอทวๆ ไป

แตไมใช the นำาหนาชอกฬา เชนThey are playing tennis (football, badminton,

volleyball).พวกเขากำาลงเลนเทสนส (ฟตบอล, แบดมนตน, วอลเลย

บอล)2. the + ชอภาษาทตอทายดวยคำา language (ถาไมม language ตอทายไมตองม the) เชน

English = he English language ภาษาองกฤษThai = the Thai language ภาษาไทยFrench = the French language ภาษาฝรงเศสHe speaks English. = He speaks the English

2.เมอเปนนามพหพจนทกลาวโดยทว ๆ ไป เชนBooks are useful. หนงสอเปนสงมประโยชน (ไมจำากดวาเปนหนงสออะไร)Museums are closed on Mondays. พพธภณฑปดทกวนจนทรTrees don’t grow in the Antarctic. ตนไมไม
