Chapter 9 Reading CheckpointChapter 9 Literary Dominoes

Directions:1. Together, let’s read from the line on page 192 (Hardcover) 235 (Paperback) “The sun set

beyond the mountains...” all the way to the end of the chapter.

Your Task:Your job is to work backwards and create literary dominoes to think about the question: Why does Sarat decide to assassinate this general and enter into the war?

Working with your partner, create a minimum of 12 dominoes, identifying all the key events in the chain that lead to this outcome. If you were to line up your dominoes of plot events, would they be in a straight line, or would there be curves and offshoots? What does your domino trail look like? How sophisticated is the plot structure? Remember to write only one event on each index card. I have plenty!

Here are some guiding questions that you might want to consider as you create your dominoes :

● Who is Sarat? How has she changed? What events have shaped her?

● Who is Albert Gaines?

● Why is Sarat different from other children her age? How is she different from her sister?

● How are Sarat’s actions and feelings described? Chapter 10 Reading CheckpointExtra Extra Read All About It!

Bullets are flying, bodies are dropping, and the tide of war has changed. One singular event has caused havoc amongst the top officials of both the Northern Union and the Free Southern State. News spreads quick but evidence is scant, how are we to know what the truth is.

Your Task:Knowing that during war news and propaganda are often intermingled, you will compose a short article that expresses a clearly biased opinion toward a Northern or Southern Agenda.

The classroom will be divided into two competing news teams tasked with spinning the story to rally emotions and support for your cause.

Below, choose which side you would like to rally support towards.

Use the space below to record thoughts and ideas before you begin composing your piece of propaganda.

Criteria for a Successful Propaganda Piece● Facts from the book● Dates, names, and locations● Opinions from witnesses● An emotional plea

● A connection to the intended audience

● Predictions for future consequence

Chapter 11 Reading Checkpoint Gambling With The Future

Sarat’s trusty Templestowe has dispatched her form of swift justice. The tides of war have changed and either side has been unsettled by the news of this assassination. There are whispers of retaliation and unrest, but no one knows who will strike next or what might happen.

Your Task:

Re-read the chapter with your table to develop an evidence based claim for what may happen in the coming pages. Develop your idea based on what you know from previous chapters and hints you have found in your current reading.

Record your group members names and your prediction below. Be sure each member has the prediction recorded in his/her packet.

Group Members:

My Group Prediction: Bets:

In Class: Each group has been given $100 to bet with in $20 bills. On the board are the predictions that each group has come up with. Take ____ minutes to think with your group.

When deciding on a prediction, consider the following.

What evidence is used to support the prediction?

Is it based on details from the text or someone's opinion?

Does this prediction fit given what I know about the characters?

Is this a likely scenario given I know what life was like in this time period?

Chapter 12 Reading Checkpoint A Tortured Mind Mirror

Directions: Now that Sarat has been captured, tortured, and released by the Northern Union, let's unpack some of what has happened. Below is an “open mind” diagram, a way of making a visual representation of your understanding of the character. Inside the outline, DRAW symbols and images and WRITE words or phrases in any combination which represent (1) the character’s appearance, (2) the character’s thoughts and feelings, (3) the character’s actions and/or behavior AND (4) other character’s reactions to the character.
