1) What kinds of circumstances are truly beyond an individual’s control and what options are truly within the realm of personal choice?

2) As a society, what is our responsibility to people whose circumstances are beyond their control? What is our responsibility to those people who cannot make choices for themselves?

3) What is the meaning of friendship, loneliness and being an outsider?

4) How can friendship/companionship combat loneliness?

5) Do our friends have to look and act like us?

6) What is our responsibility to the “friendless?” (less fortunate/less able people)

7) Can murder ever be justified? What’s the difference between murder and mercy-killing? Who decides?

8) What is the importance of our dreams?

9) Do the best-laid plans often go awry?

10) What happens if our dreams are never realized?

11) What is the most important relationship in your life? What makes this relationship important to you? How would your life be different if the relationship had not occurred and how would you be affected if the relationship ended? How does the relationship affect your decisions and actions? Does it interfere with your freedom?

Three of the key themes in the novel are:

LonelinessViolence Dreams

Read the following comments about the novel and identify which theme they support.

1. Migrant workers never stay in one place long enough to form permanent relationships.2. Lennie has a violence that he cannot control. He doesn’t have an inclination to be

violent but when he uses violence he is unable to contain it.3. Crooks has been injured by a violent kick to the spine.4. Curley’s wife has a dream of being famous and acting in movies.5. Curley is hated by those around him, including his wife and the only contact he has

with others is unfriendly.6. George is left alone once more when Lennie dies; he reconciles himself to the lonely

existence of a migrant worker.7. The word ‘Soledad’ means loneliness.8. Curley is a character that thrives on violence. Tension arises whenever he appears.9. Lennie crushes small animals at first then Curley’s hand and eventually kills Curley’s

wife.10. Migrant workers tolerated their difficult conditions by striving to be their own bosses

and put down roots of their own.11. Significantly none of the characters achieve their dreams.12. Lennie has the simplest dream, to care for rabbits, he doesn’t understand fully the need

to own land like the others.13. Curley’s wife is newly married and in a strange place and she is forbidden to speak to

anyone.14. Candy is old and different to the other hands; his only company is his dog.15. George continually plays a solitaire hand of cards in the bunkhouse.

Of Mice and MenPersuasive Paper

Write a four paragraph persuasive paper. At the end of the novel, George shoots Lennie in theback of the head. George feels he has no alternative. If he doesn’t kill him, Carlson or Curleymight. And if they don’t kill him, he definitely will go to jail for killing Curley’s wife.In this paper, write whether or not George should have killed Lennie. Remember, you need toprovide reasons and evidence. In the second body paragraph, write whether or not mercy killingor capital punishment is good. Again, make sure you provide reason. Why should mercy killingbe allowed? Why is it good? How does the novel make this clear? OR Why is mercy killingbad? And why shouldn’t it be allowed? And how does the novel make this clear?

Paragraph 1 (Introduction):Attention getter – get the reader’s attention.• rhetorical question• relevant quote from an outside source• relevant quote from the story• fact or statistic• description of initial response to the work• shocking or amusing generalization.Whichever method you decide to use, make sure the attention-getter is relevant to the topic ofyour paper. The attention-getter should relate to the topic of your paper.

Necessary information• author’s full name – John Steinbeck• Title of story – Of Mice and Men• Brief plot summary

Thesis:Your thesis should consist of a topic and limiting ideas. It should never be a question. The thesisfor a persuasive paper should make it clear which side of the controversy you are on.

Example: The novel makes it clear that capital punishment is a bad idea and should not bepracticed.

Paragraph 2 – body• Topic sentence: a topic sentence has a topic and a focus, or a limiting idea. Your topic isthe killing of Lennie. And your limiting idea is whether it was right or wrong.• Support: the rest of the paragraph should support your stance.

Paragraph 3 – body• Topic sentence: Your topic should be mercy killing or capital punishment. Your limitingidea is whether it is right or wrong.• Support: the rest of the paragraph should support your stance using reasons, examples, and so forth.

Paragraph 4 – conclusion• Restate, or reword, your thesis.• Tie it all together. This is not a summery. You may need to in two sentences remindyour reader how you have shown that they should agree with you.• Clincher: try to end your paper with a short sentence that reinforces your argument. Thisis like the attention-getter. And it can relate back to your attention-getter.
