Introduction
Nature is the most valuable and important thing in this world. Because it provides everything water, food, clothes, suitable environment for living to human beings. Among all these things water is very precious and valuable more than anything, because water is a limited resource which is essential for the survival of whole mankind as well as animals on earth.
As we all know environment, water and everything is essential for our survival it is our duty to protect these for the future while using them for our own good in present. Today the world has faced to a big challenge “The Challenge of Climate Change”. The main reason for this is environment pollution. So people must be informed and warned about the actions that can be taken as solutions for this matter and the disasters that world will face.
Sri Lanka Girl Guides Association took hands and got together with Lanka Jalani (Sri Lanka Water Partnership) to take this message to the society. The training programme was organized for girl guides by Lanka Jalani on 2011 August 5th/6th. We the girl guides that participated in this were named as ‘water messengers for IWRM’ and we promised and took the responsibility to take this message to the people.
As the first step we thought and we were advised to give this message to small children, as they are the future of the country. So we chose a Montessori to start our project.

Topics: Let’s protect water Let’s protect environment
Let’s be clean tidy and healthy
Methods used to give the message: Colorful posters Stories
Activities: At the end children were given papers to draw a picture based on the things that we taught them.
Posters we made to give the message As small children are very fond of colorful things and pictures we thought to use posters as our method to deliver our message. For this both of us have made posters by our own according to our ideas and according to the message that we wanted to give them. We made three posters based on the three topics ‘Let’s protect water’, ‘Let’s protect environment’ and ‘Let’s be clean tidy and healthy’. We made a small story for each poster as it would be helpful to make children understand easily. We think the method we used is very successful and it really helped us to achieve our goal. Below are the pictures of the posters that we made.
The Identity Card we made for the children As we thought if we can give something like this that would help to increase and improve their interest on this oh of us designed and made a identity card for them by our own. Designing and as well as making the ID cards were done by both of us. The cost spent on this was our collected pocket money. When we pin this on them we noticed they were very much interested and curious on the programme we did. Another thing that we expected from this was when the children go home definitely their mothers would get to know and ask from their children what they were taught. Then the parents also receive the message for some distance. Below are the pictures of the ID card we designed.
Day 01 First of all we have to mention that though we have created our report in English we conducted our project in Sinhala as we have chosen Pre-school children. When we got there we could see that the children were anxiously waiting to see what is going to happen. On our first day we took up the topic ‘Let’s Protect water’. Normally small children like to listen to stories. By using our poster we explained the main points in it to the children as a story. We could see that many of them were listening with a good attention. To make them awake with the message we asked few questions from them relating to the story. They started telling their experiences at home, so we tried to explain it by taking their own experiences. That day was a success.
Day 02
On our second day, that is 22nd September we took the topic ‘Let’s protect environment’. For this also we prepared a poster and present it as a story. Here also the children gave examples by their experiences. It helped us to describe the poster. There we dicussed the value of the environment, the advantages of the environment and how the modern man treat the environment. This dicussion was also a success.
Day 03 On our third day, that is 25th September we discussed the topic ‘Let’s be clean, tidy and healthy’. Without cleanliness no one can live healthy. So it the most important thing. It is important to keep ourselves clean as well as our environment. For this we prepared a poster to show them the contrast between an untidy environment and a clean and tidy environment. Before we explained the poster we asked them which picture in the poster they like most. They directly chose the picture of the clean and tidy environment. Then we explained the difference of the two pictures, what diseases would spread if there is an untidy surrounding
and as small children what they can do to keep their surrounding clean and tidy and live a healthy life. After all these things we finally asked them to draw what they got throughout these 3 days. We provided them with drawing sheets. They drew what is in there mind. This seemed to be a success one. We gave them the Identity card we made for them to make them also water messengers same as us.
The way they drew what they learnt
We think our first step is successful and we hope to continue with this project in our school too.
