The Americas: Takeaways American sports teams Provide a list of teams in one of the American or Canadian sports leagues (Canadian Football League (CFL), Major League Baseball (MLB), Major League Soccer (MLS), National Basketball Association (NBA), National Football League (NFL), or the National Hockey League (NHL)) and the cities where they play, with an outline map of North America. Ask the children to find out where these cities are and mark them on the map. Use lists of female teams as well as male teams if possible. World football teams Provide an outline world map with countries marked on and a list of the top 25 countries (according to FIFA at: https://www.fifa.com/fifa- world-ranking/ranking- table/men/ ) Ask the children to find the countries, then either colour them in on their map and name them, or number them and provide a key to the countries represented by each number. Use lists of both female teams as well as male teams if possible. This could be repeated with countries 26-50 and so on. 10 biggest cities in the USA Provide a list of the 10 most populous cities in the USA. Ask children to arrange the cities in order of population and complete the table. Mark the cities on an outline map and comment on the distribution. Repeat with Canada and South America. In class practice reading the very large numbers. Road patterns (For those with access to Google Earth at home) Find Brasilia on Google Earth and zoom in. Can you find an ‘aeroplane’ in the road pattern?Look for patterns in New York, especially around Central Park.
