Books for Bagels is a service event that will be held on January 26, 2015. The purpose of this event is to raise awareness on Chronic Kidney Disease, and to promote goodwill for companies and increase student involvement on campus. The event will consist of a book drive. We will be collecting books for the American Kidney Services. They will sell the books in their partnering thrift stores, where they will use the proceeds to help assist kidney patients financially. In exchange, students are going to have the opportunity to win a $100 gift card to the UTD Bookstore.

Statement of Need: Chronic Kidney disease is one of the costliest diseases in America today. More than 20 million Americans have kidney disease and another 20 million are at risk for it. More than 378,000 Americans suffer from kidney failure and need dialysis to stay alive (Kidneymd.org).

Medical expenditures for a Medicare patient on dialysis can go up to $250k per year. While the cost of medical expenditures for kidney patients are high, the cost of textbooks are increasing at a higher rate.

Since 1978, the cost of college textbooks has increased by 812%. According to The National Association of College Stores (NACS), the average college student will spend $655 on textbooks yearly. By the time of Graduation, College students will have spent roughly $3000 or more on textbooks, if they graduate on time (Survivingcollege.com). In addition, the popular college preparation website, College Board, estimates the annual cost of books and materials are $1,168 (Huffingtonpost.com). The high cost of text books are hurting students financially.

In order to solve kidney patients and college student’s financial burdens, we are partnering with American Kidney Services and The UTD Bookstore.

American Kidney Services is a Dallas based nonprofit healthcare organization. Their mission is to support charitable organizations that fight kidney disease. They support American Kidney Fund by collecting donations and raising funds for them. American Kidney Fund’s mission is to fight kidney disease through financial assistance to patients in need, raising awareness and prevention efforts.

The UT Dallas Bookstore is UTD’s number one place to buy books and school supplies.

Project Description

Event: Our event will be a book drive that will be held in the Comet Café. The drive will be staffed by members of the Book Club, who will each take shifts of two hours for a total of five shifts (10 hours). We will be accepting any books from students, and each student will be entered in a raffle to win a $50 gift card to the UTD Bookstore. If the student also goes to a Book Club meeting before the draw, they will be entered into the raffle for a second time.

Date: The event will take place on January 26, 2015. The reason for picking this date is because it is both at the beginning of the semester (prime time for needing a visit to the Bookstore), and because it will be before the Book Club’s first meeting of the new semester.

Student Organization: The student organization that we are partnering with is the School of Management’s Book Club. They will be the organization hosting our drive. The Book Club is an organization that meets twice a month: the first meeting is a peer-to-peer meeting to discuss a selected book, and the second meeting is a faculty-to-peer meeting where a faculty member helps the students understand the business principles in the book and how to apply them in the real world. Currently, their membership hovers around 25 members, and although it is growing, is still pretty low. Without partnership, the Book Club hopes to increase awareness about the club on campus, and bring up their numbers.

Sponsors: Our sponsors fall into 2 classifications: monetary and non-monetary. Our Comerica and Beach Mat Yoga sponsors are monetary sponsors: they will each be donating $50 gift cards for our drive’s raffle. Einstein’s Bagels will not be donating money, but will instead be donating bagels and cream cheese as an incentive to get people to stop by our drive. The UTD Bookstore is not a monetary donor either: instead they will be accepting the gift cards from our monetary sponsors to help students defray the costs of a new semester.

Benefits: Our sponsors will be gaining positive recognition on the UT Dallas campus, and will be creating rapport with the students, which in turn will foster future customer and employee relationships.

Our student organization will benefit from increased awareness of their presence and activity on campus, and their return on investment of time and effort is projected to be increased membership.

Staffing: The event will be hosted at the Comet Café, on campus; it is the decided place for the drive because it is common ground for all students and has heavy foot traffic. Moreover, the Book Club will be supplying members to staff the drive, and tables and bins for collections.

Event Planners: The event will be start at 10am, Jan 26, 2015, and we have total 5 people to work on the event. Each shift will last 2 hours.

Event Coordinators: We will instruct students how to sign up for Book Club membership, and they can drop off their books and take bagels.

Event host: The Book Club will be making sure it is appropriate for the event to take place in the Comet Café.

News reporter: JSOM book club’s staffs may come and take some pictures and post on UTD website.

We expect this event to cost about $600, but with the amount of donations we are planning to receive, we expect to spend no cost for this event.
