Rang a haon

Week beginning Mon 20th April to Fri. 24th April.

Dear Parents,

I hope you and your families are safe and well. Thank you for all the work you are doing with your children at home. The following is suggested work for your children.

It is important to give your child regular movement breaks especially when they are transitioning from one subject to another. They are used to doing this in class. Remind the children to do some of the following: chair push ups; jumping jacks; running on the spot; touch alternate foot with alternate hand; burpees, Enjoy!

Numeracy: This week we will concentrate on ‘counting and numeration within 99’. (The child can count the number of objects in a set to 99; count on and

backwards from a given number 0-90; write and order numerals 0- 90). A lot of the exercises below are similar to those done before Easter when we did place value to 50. We will be extending this work over the next few weeks to cover place value to 99.

[I have enclosed home-school communication sheets with the childrens school books. They may help with consolidating tables and mathematical concepts. Home/school link sheet 19 (place value to 99) may be useful this week and next week.

- Continue with one day of Mental Maths each day. - Continue with revision of addition tables. (1-10). Play games such as beat the clock! ( Time your child saying e.g three times table. Your child can beat his/her own time.

Make out a list of addition sums e.g 3+6; 4+5; 2+8; 3+9, 5+5; 6+4 etc. Test your child to see how many he/she can answer in one minute. Retest your child and see if he/she can improve their score.

- Ask your child to count from 50 to 100 and count backwards from 100 clapping his/her hand as s/he says each individual number.- Ask your child to count in tens from 10 to 100. As he says each multiple of ten he alternates from clapping a number to tapping a number. For example s/he will say

10(clap), 20(tap), 30(clap), 40(tap), etc.

Page 5: €¦  · Web viewClick on’ Lesson’. Go to 23 ‘Ag ceannach sú’. Do interactive activities. Page 112, 113 workbook. Gaeilge: ; For conversation and questions click on comhr

- Number detective:- Give your child a number between 50 and 99. Encourage him to come up with as many facts as possible about the number, e.g 67……….It is made up of six tens and seven units; It comes just after 66; It comes just before 68; It is an odd number, It is 3 greater than 63; It is 3 less than 71. Some children may give this information orally which is absolutely fine. Others may record the information on paper.

- Mystery number: write down a number between 50 and 99 on a sheet of paper. Your child has to ask you some questions in order to find out what the mystery number is, but you can only reply using yes or no answers. E.g is it less than 70?, does it have 6 tens? is it an even number? etc.

- Remember we learnt spellings sixty, seventy, eighty, ninety. Give children some numerals on a page e.g 63…………….; 72………….; 89…………..etc. Children can write the number name beside the numeral i.e 63 sixty three. Alternatively write the number name for the child and s/he can write the correct numeral. E.g You write ‘eighty four’ ,Pupil reads it and writes ‘84’.

- The following are some fun interactive activities to consolidate this work.- http://data.cjfallon.ie/resources/19619/activity-111/index.html - http://data.cjfallon.ie/resources/19619/activity-112/index.html# - http://data.cjfallon.ie/resources/19619/activity-113/index.html - http://data.cjfallon.ie/resources/19619/activity-114/index.html

Relevant pages of Busy at Maths 1: pages 111, 112, 113.

English:- Continue with two days of ‘New wave English’ each week.

- ‘Farmyard adventures’- Read one page each day and discuss with your child. Draw a picture about page you have read or write about what you read in your own words.

- DEAR time ( Drop everything and read):-Set up a quiet corner in the house where your child can go to and read a book. Make it as comfortable as possible using a few cushions or a beanbag. Encourage your child to read silently everyday for 10 mins. ( Comics and picture books are all fine).

- Help your child choose a book to read from Oxford owls.(see link at bottom of page)- Encourage your child to write his/her news twice a week. Remind your child about using Capital letters, full stops, check spellings).

Page 6: €¦  · Web viewClick on’ Lesson’. Go to 23 ‘Ag ceannach sú’. Do interactive activities. Page 112, 113 workbook. Gaeilge: ; For conversation and questions click on comhr

- DEAW ( Drop everything and write). Encourage your child to get an old copy where s/he can practice DEW two or three times a week. Children can write on a topic of interest to them or write little stories (as so many of them like to do). It is important not to correct spellings, punctuation etc( unlike other written work pupils do) as the aim of DEAW is to encourage ‘Free writing’.

Sample topics for DEW: My hobbies, my favourite animal/team/ song/band etc.

Phonics : Revise final sounds –nt; -sk; -lt. ( Choose the book level you feel best suits your child if you feel they need to consolidate work previously learnt or you feel your child needs to be challenged some more).

6. click the above link. 7. Click Sounds like Phonics C..8. Click unit 1- The Aquarium.9. Click ‘Revise final sounds’ –nt; -sk; -lt.10. Complete the various interactive activities on the page.

Spellings: cent, tent, ant, plant , mask, desk, tusk, whisk, belt, melt, spilt, quilt. ( These spellings are based on phonics above). Encourage children to put one of these spelling words into a sentence daily and draw a picture to go with each sentence).

Handwriting: Children can practice all the lower case letters in a fun way.http://data.cjfallon.ie/resources/handwriting/index.html

1. Click on link.2. Go to Handwriting made easy looped style.3. Remind your child about good posture and correct pencil grip.4. Have fun!

(Pupils can do a page of handwriting workbook weekly now that books have been sent home).

Gaeilge:- Léigh sa Bhaile 1 : Continue to listen to your child read one page aloud daily from the the book. (It is important to remember pupils only start Irish reading in

First class. Read the page to your child if s/he is finding it challenging or alternatively encourage them to read along with the audioreading.)- An audio reading of each page is available at http://my.cjfallon.ie to help with pronunciation and comprehension.
