How to create a PowerPoint presentation for the classroom.

1. Start Microsoft PowerPoint by double-clicking with the left mouse button on the PowerPoint icon.2. If there is no icon on the desktop, click on the Start button on the bottom left corner of the screen, select

All Programs, select Microsoft Office, and then select Microsoft Office PowerPoint. The following screen will appear.

3. Select the design you will use for the presentation by clicking on the Design tab at the top of the screen (3rd from the left).

I selected the blue design with the wavy lines at the top. You can select any of the designs shown. You can also download other designs free from the internet.

4. Click in the Click to add title text box and type a title for your presentation. In the text box below you can add a subtitle.

5. Right click on the preview of slide 1 (to the left of the main slide) and select New slide.

A new slide will be inserted. Notice the new slide looks different than the title slide. You can also duplicate or delete a slide using this method. You can see the new slide below.

6. You can now click to add a page title and click to add text below. The text below the title will automatically be bulleted.NOTE: Don’t put too much text on each slide and make the text large enough to read. The default text is 32 pt. Try to keep that size or even go a little larger.

7. In the center of the new page, there are six icons. By clicking on these you can insert a table, a chart, a smart art graphic, a picture, clip art or a media clip (sound or video). You can also insert these from the Insert Menu at the top of the screen.

Open a new document

1. Click the office button at the upper left corner of your screen and click New.

Select a design

2. Click on the Design tab at the top of the page and select the design you want.

Add a page

3. Right click on the slide preview on the left and select New slide. A new slide appears below the current slide.

Enter a title

4. Click in the Click to add title text box on the first slide and type a title for the presentation.

Animate the title

5. Click anywhere on your title. Click on the Animations tab at the top left of the page. Select Custom Animation. The animation box opens on the far right of the screen. Click on the Add Effect tab. Select Entrance. Select Fly In. Your text will fly in from the bottom. This can be changed to fly in from the top or either side as well. You can also select different types of entrances.

6. Select Click to add subtitle and type a subtitle.

7. Click anywhere on the subtitle. Click on the Add Effect on the Custom Animation tab on the far right. Select Entrance. Select Bounce. (Note: You may have to select More Effects if Bounce is not available.) Your text will bounce in from the top. You can also select different types of entrances.

Insert a picture

8. Click on the Insert tab at the top left of the page. Select the Pictureicon. Find the directory where your picture is stored. Left double-click on the picture you want. It will be inserted into your new document. Adjust the size of the picture by dragging one of the handles on the picture.

Animate the picture

9. Click on the picture. Click on the Add Effect on the Custom Animation tab on the far right. Select Entrance. Select Pinwheel. Your picture will spin into place. You can also select different types of entrances for the picture.

Insert a piece of clipart

10. Click on the Insert tab at the top left of the page. Select the Clipart icon. The clipart library will appear on the right. Click in the Search for box and type the name of the clipart you would like to insert (for example, dog). Left double-click on the clipart you want. It will be inserted into your new document. Adjust the size of the clipart by dragging one of its handles.

Animate the clipart

11. Click on the clipart. Click on the Add Effect on the Custom Animation tab on the far right. Select Entrance. Select Appear. Your picture will appear in the document. You can also select different types of entrances for the clipart.

Insert a video

12. Click on the Insert tab at the top left of the page. Select Movie. Navigate to the directory where the movie is located. Left double-click on the movie’s name. The movie will be inserted into the document.

Insert a sound

13. Click on the Insert tab at the top left of the page. Select Sound. Navigate to the directory where the sound is located. Left double-click on the sound’s name. The sound will be inserted into the document.

Fill in the blanks exercise for the verb “to be”

1. Open Microsoft PowerPoint2. Click Design on the ribbon at the top.3. Click on one of the designs.4. Click where it says, “Click to add title” and type the title, The Verb “to be.”5. Right click on the small title slide on the left and select New Slide.6. Click on the small slide 2 on the left.7. Click where it says, “Click to add title” and type the title, The Verb “to be.”8. Click where it says, “Click to add text” and type I.9. Click on the edge of the text box, hold down the Ctrl key and drag to the right.10. Let go of the mouse button. You now have two text boxes with the word I in them.11. Do this once more. You now have three text boxes.12. Click in the first text box after the word ‘I’ and press Enter. Type ‘you’ and press Enter.13. Type ‘he,’ ‘we,’ ‘you’ and ‘they’ pressing Enter after each word.14. In the second text box type the following words, pressing Enter after each word: am, are, is, are,

are, are.15. In the third text box type the following words, pressing Enter after each word: happy, young,

tired, anxious, rich, and sick.16. Select all of the text in the second text box and uncheck bullets at the top.

17. Select all of the text in the third text box and uncheck bullets at the top.18. Click on the first text box, hold down Shift key, and click on the second and third text boxes.19. Click on Drawing Tools at the top of your screen.20. Select Align and then Align Top. The three text boxes are now vertically aligned.21. Animate the text by doing the following:

a. click on the word Ib. click the Animations tab at the top left of the screen.c. select Custom Animation. A window opens on the right of the screen.d. Select the word ‘I’ in the first text box. e. Select Add EffectEntranceFly In.f. Under the Direction heading select From Left.g. Select the ‘happy’ in the third text box.h. Select Add EffectEntranceFly In.i. Under the Direction heading select From Right.j. Select the ‘am in the second text box.k. Select Add EffectEntranceFly In.l. Under the Direction heading select From Top.m. Repeat this same order for all of the words in the text boxes.

22. Select Slide Show to test your PowerPoint.23. Adjust the text boxes as necessary for appearance sake.
