Because of Winn-Dixie

Book Summary: One summer Opal and her father, the preacher, move to Naomi, Florida to pursue a new life. When Opal was young her mother left her, and even since then her dad has been depressed. In Florida, Opal is determined to make a new life for herself and find friends. Her first friend is a dog she finds unexpectedly in a supermarket when she claims him as her own. Opal names him Winn-Dixie and take him home to the preacher. Thanks to Winn-Dixie, many unexpected things happened in Opal’s life that summer. The preacher told her ten things about her mother, Gloria Dump becomes a known treasure after hiding away for so long, and Opal makes friends she didn’t think Naomi would give her. The story is full of friendship and forgiveness, and of course, all because of Winn-Dixie.

Author Summary: Kate DiCamillo was born in Philadelphia and moved to Florida at the age of five. DiCamillo earned a degree in English at the University of Florida, however she now resides in Minneapolis. She has been recognized for a number of awards and books throughout her years as a writer. DiCamillo wrote to Scholastic about the book Because of Winn-Dixie, “I wrote Because of Winn-Dixie because I was homesick for Florida (I live in Minneapolis) and because I wanted a dog and couldn't have one (I lived in an apartment building that didn't permit them). It allowed me to go home and to spend time with a dog of the highest order. As for the other characters, I never know where they come from; I just feel happy and lucky when they choose me to tell their stories. India Opal seems so real to me, I don't think I could have made her up. Rather, I feel like I discovered her.”

DRAWING CONCLUSIONS

Read the excerpt from Because of Winn-Dixie chapter one. Draw conclusions about what will happen next and continue the story in your own words.

“My name is India Opal Buloni, and last summer my daddy, the preacher, sent me to the store for a box of macaroni-and-cheese, some white rice, and two tomatoes and I came back with a dog. This is what happened: I walked into the produce section of the Winn-Dixie grocery store to pick out my two

tomatoes and I almost bumped right into the store manager. He was standing there all red-faced, screaming and waving his arms around.“Who let a dog in here?” he kept on shouting. “Who let a dirt dog in

here?”

When Opal meets Otis for the first time in Gertrude’s Pet Store he is playing a song called Butterfly and his music intrigues her.

Let’s learn the song together!

I am not a lucky man...I am not a lucky man...You are like a butterfly

A Caterpillars dream to flySo bust out of this old cocoon

And dry your wings offButterfly

Go ahead, and fly

It’s always such a lonely loomIts sudden like a broken bone

And your luck won’t always come alongSo dry your tears away

ButterflyGo ahead and fly

Dry your tears awayButterfly

Don't you, cry

Comprehension Strategies

1) Visualization. Students will draw an illustration of what they picture in their minds and they will repeat this activity for each chapter. This can be a character, an event, or a setting that stood out to them. After, the teacher will allow the students to participate in a gallery walk to see each other’s illustrations. Worksheet for this activity can be found on page 23.

2) Recall. Students will recall information they have read in each chapter and answer the discussion questions for each guided reading. The resources pages can be found on page 24-36.

3) Predicting. Throughout the book students will complete the predictions worksheet on page 37. They will be asked to find evidence in the text and explain what they already know, and then they can make a prediction about what will happen next. The teacher can use before reading or throughout each chapter to go along with the guided readings.

4) Making Connections. The students will use the graphic organizer on page 38 to make connections to other text, themselves, and the world. This worksheet can be used throughout the novel study and/or completed at the end.

5) Summarizing. Students will read aloud a chapter to someone and complete the worksheet on page 39. This will help students acquire the skill of summarizing and can be used for any chapter of the novel.

6) Making Inferences. After reading one of the final chapters when Winn-Dixie hides during the storm, students will complete the activity on page 40. Students should make inferences as to where Winn-Dixie might be and why he ran away.

21

Page 22: dabneychitwood.weebly.com  · Web viewNovel Study: Because of Winn-Dixie 1. Book Selection. Because of Winn-Dixie

Novel Study: Because of Winn-Dixie

7) Questioning. Students will create a 3D cube and on each side they will write a question they have about a chapter or a specific character. After, they will throw the cube and their partner will catch it. Whatever question your thumb lands on is the one you have to ponder together and/or research the answer. Template for cube is on page 41.

8) Determining Importance. Students will demonstrate the skill of summarizing by finding ten things in the novel about Winn-Dixie that are most important for others to know. Then, students will use their ten important facts and draw a picture of Winn-Dixie as if they were creating a movie. Resources are on pages 42-43.

Students will write a letter to Opal as if they are Winn-Dixie writing it. They will start with the prewriting phrase and complete a graphic organizer. Next, they will write a draft, revise their draft, and then make corrections where necessary. Finally, they will complete a publishing checklist to make sure it’s ready and then one last final draft. Resources and directions are below.

Prewriting: Students will complete a graphic organizer—Brainstorm Cluster—on page 45 to help them brainstorm ideas. They will be encouraged to write down any questions they have about the novel in order to retrieve answers and begin drafting.

Drafting: Students will write their first draft for their letter and the template can be found on page 46. The teacher should reiterate that this is just a rough draft of their letter. It’s okay to make mistakes; they will be given the opportunity to correct them during the next writing step.

Revising: During the revising stage, students will meet in their learning groups and offer feedback to one another. They will be given time to read their stories and then students can give compliments, suggestions, and other improvements. They will revise at least two peers’ letters. The resource for revising is on page 47. Students will complete a second draft before editing using the same template.

Editing: Students will be given a checklist of things to look for in their writing. The checklist can be found on page 48-49 and the students should receive two copies of it. They will be editing their own writing as well as a peers writing, giving them ample feedback on their letters.

Publishing: After editing their second draft and completing the publish checklist on page 50, students will publish their letters using the template found on page 51. They will be addressed and mailed to the author.

Novel Study: Because of Winn-Dixie

A boy and his dog make a glorious pair:No better friendship is found anywhere,

For they talk and they walk and they run and they play,And they have their deep secrets for many a day;

And that boy has a comrade who thinks and who feels,Who walks down the road with a dog at his heels.

He may go where he will and his dog will be there,May revel in mud and his dog will not care;Faithful he'll stay for the slightest command

And bark with delight at the touch of his hand;Oh, he owns a treasure, which nobody steals,

Who walks down the road with a dog at his heels.

No other can lure him away from his side;He's proof against riches and station and pride;

Fine dress does not charm him, and flattery's breathIs lost on the dog, for he's faithful to death;

He sees the great soul, which the body conceals--Oh, it's great to be young with a dog at your heels!

The teacher will read the poem aloud to students. Students will draw a picture of themselves and what their dog

would look like if they had their own (page 54). They will also be encouraged to write their own poem about their portrait.

Animals Are a Man’s Best Friend’sAfter listening to the poem, draw a detailed picture of

what you imagine your own dog to look like. Read over the poem again and create your own poem to describe the friendship you have with the dog in your picture.
