Topic

Art of AfricaStarter: Have you ever heard of Ndebele art?

Ndebele art originated from a village called Ndzundza in South Africa where people created their own traditional style of house painting. The vibrant symbols and expressions portray communications of personal prayers, self-identification, values, emotions and marriage. One well known South African artist from the Ndebele nation is Esther Mahlangu, who became famous for her bold large-scale, colourful and geometric paintings.

Task:

Look around your house (kitchen walls, bathroom tiles, wallpaper etc.) what patterns can you notice? Pick a pattern and draw this out using lots of vibrant colours. Once you have done this, underneath your piece, write a list of the colours used and what they could mean.

For example:

green – nature

pink – love

white – purity

etc..
