November 2017

Dear parents/carers,

Firstly a well done to all the children for making a wonderful start to Year 5! It was a fantastic half-term, with lots already achieved. We have another challenging half-term ahead but I have no doubt that the children will embrace this with enthusiasm.

During this half term, we will be covering the following topics:

REThe children will continue working from our school RE scheme- The Way, the Truth and the Life. We will be covering the topic ‘The Commandments’. We will be continuing with a creative approach, even turning year 5 into our very own courtroom!

EnglishThis half term begins with another writing competition, exploring what the purpose is in everything we write. We will then be reflecting on WW1 and WW2 from arguing as to whether or not national service should be re-introduced to writing our very own adventure story from the point of view of an evacuee. There will be a big focus on revising and editing our work as we develop our independent working skills.

MathsThe following areas will be covered: place value, multiplication, division, perimeter, and area.

ScienceLiving things, including humans.

TopicWe will be continuing on our journey, exploring the mysterious world of Ancient Benin by beginning to think like real historians.

HomeworkReading- Children are expected to read twice weekly as a minimum with reading records to be signed by a parent or guardian on each occasion. I highly recommend that children read in addition to their school reading book. During the time reading to an

adult, I suggest reading shorter amounts and spending the additional time to discuss. Ask questions like, ‘What do you think the character is feeling? Why do you think that? What do you predict will happen? Why do you think the author has chosen that word?’

Spellings- A list of words be sent home every Monday, to be tested the following Monday. The children are expected to take ‘a little and often’ approach to learning their spellings. They are required to write 5 sentences using words from their list but can enter a prize draw for a reward from ‘Miss Jackson’s shop’ if they push themselves to write 10 +sentences. Children are encouraged to learn the spelling patterns and rules as oppose to simple rote learning.

Maths/English- Small homework tasks will be set often to reinforce the learning in class. This normally will be handed in the following day. On occasion, longer homework tasks may be set over the weekend. Whilst I often set homework to be completed in the children’s workbooks, the children are still encouraged to log on to mathletics in additional time at home. Certificates= a name in Miss Jackson’s shop prize draw!

School uniform- Please can you ensure your child’s belongings are labelled.

If you have any concerns whatsoever please do not hesitate to contact to arrange an appointment.

Many thanks,

Miss Jackson, Miss Wilkinson and Mrs Youhill
