Easter is upon us. It is wonderful time of year. There is simply no other time of year that has so much meaning for the Christian church. Easter is a time that the church comes together in community to reflect on what God has done for us. After the contemplation and self-analysis of Lent we move toward the joy of Easter. Easter is a time that Christians come together and worship the Risen Christ, worship in amazement of the resurrection of Christ, the Lord. We read in the 20 th Chapter of John that the disciples learn that Jesus has disappeared from the tomb. They just could not understand what had just happened. But we know that over the following days they would come to understand. They would understand that they had witnessed a miraculous and world transforming event. They had witnessed a new thing. We witness a renewal of that new thing on Easter morning. So, how should we respond to this new thing? We respond to the renewal that is Easter by redirecting our lives and strengthening our commitment to loving others. We realize on Easter that because Christ lives, we are forgiven. We are healed. We are transformed into new people. Because of that wonderful transformation we are all called to give thanks. As we celebrate Easter this year, let us dedicate ourselves to living our transformation. Let us give thanks for what Easter represents. Blessings, Charles Page | 1 Trinity Volume 7, Issue 4 April 2019

We read in the 20th Chapter of John that the disciples learn that Jesus has disappeared from the tomb.

Blessings,

Charles

Mrs. Martin can be reached at 315-1820. Thank you for being such an important part of our service.

Join us at Trinity on April 18 for a special Maundy Thursday service to include a reader’s play, Lest We Forget, as well as Holy Communion. 7 p.m.

Maundy Thursday, also known as Holy Thursday, falls each year on the Thursday before Easter Sunday and is the first of the three days of solemn remembrance of the events leading up to and immediately following the crucifixion of Jesus The day commemorates the famous Last Supper – most famously depicted by Leonardo da Vinci – when Jesus had his final meal with the 12 disciples before his crucifixion.

The day falls on the fifth day of Holy Week, one day before Good Friday – the day Jesus Christ was crucified.

"Maundy" is derived from the Latin word mandatum, the first word in the famous phrase "A new commandment I give you: Love one another" (John 13:34). Jesus had said this to explain why he served the disciples after washing their feet.

That's why services on Maundy Thursday will often include feet washing or other acts of physical care to remember this scene in the Bible. Churches that celebrate the day often also hold a Lord's Supper or Holy Communion as well.

Although Maundy Thursday is not a national holiday in the United States, it is a public holiday in several countries, including: Columbia, Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Paraguay, Philippines, and Spain.

Note: Readers Theater is readers reading a script adapted from literature, and the audience picturing the action from hearing the script being read aloud.

It requires no sets, costumes, props, or memorized lines.

Join us at New Chapel for a Good Friday Service - 7 pm

The source of our term for the Friday before Easter, "Good Friday," is not clear.  It may be a corruption of the English phrase "God's Friday," according to Professor Laurence Hull Stookey in Calendar: Christ's Time for the Church (p. 96). It is the common name for the day among English- and Dutch-speaking

people. It is a day that proclaims God's purpose of loving and redeeming the world through the cross of our Lord, Jesus Christ. It is a day that is good because God

was drawing the world to God's self in Christ. As seen in John's gospel, particularly, God was in control. God was not making the best of a bad situation but was

working out God's intention for the world — winning salvation for all people. We call it "good" because we look backward at the crucifixion through the lens of Easter!

THE SEVEN LAST WORDS OF JESUS ON THE CROSS

The Sayings of Jesus on the cross are seven expressions biblically attributed to Jesus during his crucifixion. Traditionally, the brief sayings have been called "words". They are gathered from the four Canonical Gospels. Three of the sayings appear only in the Gospel of Luke and three only in the Gospel of John. Wikipedia

THE FIRST WORD. “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.” Gospel of Luke 23:34. THE SECOND WORD. “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.” Gospel of Luke 23:43.THE THIRD WORD. “Jesus said to his mother: ‘Woman, this is your son.’ Then he said to the disciple: ‘This is your mother.’ Gospel of John 19:26-27. THE FOURTH WORD. “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Matthew 27:46 and Mark 15:34THE FIFTH WORD. “I thirst.” Gospel of John 19:28. THE SIXTH WORD. When Jesus had received the wine, he said, “It is finished;” and he bowed his head and handed over the spirit. (Gospel of John 19:30).THE SEVENTH WORD. Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.” (Gospel of Luke 23:46

Spring Symbols Remind Us of Resurrection

When the weather turns warmer and the grass grows greener, it’s easier to understand the promise of new life and renewed hope that Christians proclaim as

“Easter people.” The reminders are all around us so be sure to keep an eye out on your next spring stroll.

BirdsThe robin, a very common bird in the U.S., has a red breast and a legend   to explain it. Seems that once a gray robin flew to Christ’s crown of thorns

to draw out a thorn, and when it did, a drop of Christ’s blood fell on its breast, leaving a stain forevermore.

BeesIt takes lots of  buzzing bees to spread the pollen and make flowers grow. The honey these creatures create is a biblical symbol of God’s favor. The Torah agrees, for it describes God’s promised land again and again as “flowing with milk and honey.”

FlowersLong considered a symbol of hope and new life, the daffodil is one of the blooms most often connected to the Resurrection. Tradition says that giving a gift of daffodils will ensure happiness for the receiver—but always give a bunch: a single bloom signals doom.

The flowering shrub known as the forsythia is what I call the Easter tree, because when its spidery branches are moving with the wind, they seem to be arms waving in praise of the season. According to tradition, forsythia means anticipation—an appropriate companion word for Resurrection.  It is said the dogwood tree used to grow straight and tall, but after it was used as a crucifix for Christ, God made it short and twisted with a thin trunk so it could never be used as a cross again.

The dogwood bloom has four parts, each with a rusty red color on the end and a small hole, a reminder of where the nails were driven into the cross. The center stamens look like the crown of thorns.

FaithThe traditions that developed around these spring symbols helped explain the concept that God in the flesh took on death and came back to tell us there is life on the other side. What fantastic news!

This spring, be a witness to the good news that Christ is risen: Learn about the symbols and notice them when you

are outdoors this season. Even better: plant some dogwoods and flowers in your yard and on the grounds of your church.

Fashion a cross from cuttings of spring flowers. Invite others to help. Set it out in front of your church, or even your house, for all to see.

Make (don’t buy) a gift for someone who needs to be reminded of the love of God made known in the Risen Christ.

Play. Not a video game or a phone app. Physically play. Move. Dance. Interestingly, the Irish jig and tap dancing have their roots in an early Saxon tradition called the “hop-egg.” The purpose was to step among a dozen eggs as if walking the Stations of the Cross. This egg dance is likely the distant relative of hopscotch.

The Council at Nicaea in 325 AD gave the Church a revised creed. The last line reads: “We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.”

As Easter people, we don’t have to look further than spring for an exclamation point to that affirmation.
