We are Exmouth Community College and we love to read! There’s always a lot going on with books and reading here in College and when we looked at “A Child Of Books” by Oliver Jeffers and Sam Winston we were enthused and excited to show which other stories have inspired us to “keep reading!” So we has a vote in Year 7 (some Post 16 students helped out with this) to decide what were the most popular book genres- these genres would then become our seven continents on our reading globe. We then voted for our favourite reads from these genres. When we had a shortlist of titles we made mini booklets, complete with mini reviews and drawings and put them around our globe. The 7 Continents were Dystopia; Empire of Funny and Peculiar; Virtual World; Teen Angst; Fantasy Land and the United States of Mystery and Adventure (North Mystery and South Adventure!) Over 100 students took part in Art and English lessons, assemblies and break and lunchtimes to create our “World Of Books” display which will now travel to several locations around the school. The attached power point shows the shortlisted titles and the Photographs show our globe as it was being constructed. Factoids! The most populated continent was the land of Dystopia. The book with the most votes was “The Hunger Games.” The Library stocked all but two of the 83 titles suggested by the students (and these are now on order!)

We are Exmouth Community College and we love to read!

There’s always a lot going on with books and reading here in College and when we looked at “A Child Of Books” by Oliver Jeffers and Sam Winston we were enthused and excited to show which other stories have inspired us to “keep reading!”

So we has a vote in Year 7 (some Post 16 students helped out with this) to decide what were the most popular book genres- these genres would then become our seven continents on our reading globe. We then voted for our favourite reads from these genres.

When we had a shortlist of titles we made mini booklets, complete with mini reviews and drawings and put them around our globe.

The 7 Continents were Dystopia; Empire of Funny and Peculiar; Virtual World; Teen Angst; Fantasy Land and the United States of Mystery and Adventure (North Mystery and South Adventure!)

Over 100 students took part in Art and English lessons, assemblies and break and lunchtimes to create our “World Of Books” display which will now travel to several locations around the school.

The attached power point shows the shortlisted titles and the Photographs show our globe as it was being constructed.

Factoids!

The most populated continent was the land of Dystopia.

The book with the most votes was “The Hunger Games.”

The Library stocked all but two of the 83 titles suggested by the students (and these are now on order!)

Mrs B was very happy that her favourite book “Great Expectations” was mentioned in Oliver and Sam’s book.
