Green for ’go’ meaning that everyone should be able to do these maths questions. Orange for ‘tricky’ meaning that the task is harder and you are still at the stage of

mastering this skill. Red is for ‘challenging’ and when you feel confident and fully understand the skill.

It is up to you as to which maths colour you attempt. Page 2

Maths InvestigationProblem solving

Emily, Gregor, Isla and Kirk build a snowman together but cannot decide how to dress him. They have a hat, a scarf, a belt and a walking stick. The snowman can wear any combination or none of the four items. How many different ways can the snowman be dressed? Before you begin, think about what you have learned that will make solving this problem easier. Using pictures to help you is not the quickest way. What did we do for the cream cakes question?

Keeping your numeracy skills sharp.Choose an easier section first, then challenge yourself by trying a trickier colour. Write out these sums fully and show all of your working. Please do this task on a separate piece of paper.

What is palm oil and what does it have to do with climate change?

Palm oil is an edible vegetable oil from the fruit of the West African oil palm tree. It is used for fuel, cosmetics, snack foods, ice cream, lotion and soap, and is in about half of all products in our shops. The oil palm tree is grown in tropical regions (mostly in Indonesia and Malaysia, but now spreading all over the tropics, including Africa). Large areas of rain forests are being cleared by burning to make room for crops of palm trees. When the trees in the rain forest are being burned, they release massive amounts of carbon dioxide gas which then become trapped in the atmosphere and this contributes to global warming.

Draw a tree in the middle of a piece of paper and surround it by writing what uses they have - for us, animal life, the environment and the climate. For example – paper is made from the wood, birds use the branches to nest in etc. You can add illustrations.

ConservationThe rainforests are the lungs of the Earth. The main threat to the rainforests is the massive expansion of palm oil plantations.

Task – Read the labels on the food that you have in your kitchen and make a list of the ones that contain palm oil in their ingredients.

What did you learn by doing this task?

Design a badgeDesign a badge to wear which promotes the saving of the rainforests across the world.

WritingA narrative poem is a story written in the form of poem.

L.I. To explore writing a narrative poem.I know that I have to include a sequence of events in the poem.I understand how to use a rhyming scheme and can use this in the narrative poem.I am able to write a narrative poem which tells a story through a sequence of events and a rhyming scheme.

Task – Try and write a narrative poem which can be about a food that you like/dislike, a pet, or an event.

Create a simple plan of the story This should only take a few lines.

Next, create an order for your poem so that it has a beginning, middle and end.

Then brainstom words and ideas which link with your poem.

Now have fun playing around with the sentences and vocabulary to make it into a poem.

This task might be tricky, so having someone to help will make it more fun. I am just wanting you to ‘have a go’ as you may not have experienced this before.

Just have fun playing around with

writing a narrative poem. I will be pleased to see any attempts as I am not expecting a polished finished piece.
