The Definitive Paragraph

The ability to write a definitive paragraph is a useful study skill. The word definitive means to “define precisely”. Said in a different way, a definitive paragraph is an accurate summary. You must often summarize in conversations and discussions. You are frequently asked to summarize on tests and in reports or research papers.

In writing a definitive paragraph, your goal should be to condense the passage to be summarized by two- thirds. A passage of 300 words should be condensed to approximately 100 words. A definitive paragraph should be only one paragraph in length. Follow these steps:

1. Read the document to be summarized until you understand it completely. From the document/passage source you must use only the document/passage, not the introductory section of the document, which is an editorial introduction by the author of the book.

2. State the main idea of the passage in a single sentence (a “definitive statement”) of your own words. This will be the opening sentence of your definitive paragraph.

3. Summarize in your own words the important details that support the main idea. Omit minor details and all unnecessary words. Each paragraph should have at least 5-7 sentences of support. Remember that your goal is to paraphrase what the document is stating.

4. Always write using the past tense. The events occurred. Never use the first person in any historical writing of this nature.

5. Check on the accuracy of your summary. Do not insert your own ideas; stick to the author’s.

6. If your first effort does not condense the passage by two-thirds, revise until your summary is about one-third the length of the original.

Throughout the entire academic year, you will be required to write a series of definitive paragraphs on various sources. You will find this method to be of value when compiling research papers or other kinds of work, as well as writing the American history DBQs.
