11. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given at the end of it: (1*15=15)

The study of control processes in the electronic, mechanical, and biological systems is known as cybernetics. The word was coined in 1948 by the American mathematician Norbert Wiener from the Greek word meaning pilot or steersman. Cybernetics is concerned with the analysis of the flow of information in both living organisms and machines, but it is particularly concerned with systems that are capable of regulating their own operations without human control.

Automatic regulation is accomplished by using information about the state of the end products that is fed back to the regulating device, causing it to modify or correct production procedures if necessary. The concept of feedback is at the very heart of cybernetics’ and is what makes a system automatic and self –regulating. A simple example of a self-regulating machine is a thermostat, which reacts to continual feedback about the outside temperature and responds accordingly to achieve the temperature that has been programmed into it.

The application of cybernetics’ are wide reaching, appearing in science, engineering, technology, sociology, economics, education and medicine. Computers can keep a patient alive during a surgical operation a making instantaneous modifications based on a constant flow of information. In education, teaching machines use cybernetics principles to instruct students on an individual basis. In the home, automation is present in such everyday products as refrigerators, coffeemakers’, and dishwashers’. In industry, automation is

increasing its applications, although it is currently applied primarily to the large-scale production of single units. In industries in which a break in the flow of production can ruin the product, automatic controls are invaluable. Chemical and petroleum plants are now almost completely automatic, as are industries involved in the production of chemicals and atomic energy. Automation has become the answer when human safety is the number one priority.

Silver occurs in ores of several metals. The froth process of extracting silver accounts for about 75 percent of all silver recovered. Here the ore is ground to a powder, placed in large vats containing water suspensions of frothing agents and thoroughly agitated by jets of air. Depending on the agent used, either the silver-bearing ore or the gangue adhering to the bubbles of the froth is skimmed off and washed. The final refining is done using electrolysis.

11. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given at the end of it: (1x14=14)

Humans have struggled against weeds since the beginnings of agriculture. Marring our gardens is one of the milder effects of weeds- any plants that thrive where they are unwanted. The clog waterways, destroy wildlife habitats, and impede farming. Their spread eliminates grazing areas and accounts for one third of crop loss; they compete for sunlight, nutrients, and water with useful plants.

The global need for weed control has been answered mainly by the chemical industry. Its herbicides are effective and sometimes necessary, but some pose serious problems, particularly, if misused. Toxic compounds threaten animal and public health when they accumulate in food plants, ground water and drinking water. They also harm workers who apply them.

In recent years, the chemical industry has introduced several herbicides that are more ecologically sound. Yet new chemicals alone cannot solve the world’s weed problems. Hence scientists are exploring the innate weed killing powers organisms, primarily insects and microorganisms.

The biological agents now in use are environmentally benign and are harmless to humans. They can be chosen for their ability to attack selected targets and leave crops and other plants untouched. In contrast, some of the most effective chemicals kill virtually all the plants they come in contact with sparing only those that are naturally resistant or have been genetically modified for resistance. Furthermore, a number of biological agents can be administered only once, after which no added applications are needed. Chemicals typically must be used several times per growing season.

PART-B [30 Marks]

11. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given at the end of it: Sun light is usually known as white light, which is a combination of all the colours. When sunlight shines on an object, some of the light is absorbed, whereas the remaining light is reflected by the object. This reflected light gives the colour for that object.

Most flowers in nature are varyingly and brightly coloured. The colour of a flower depends on the absorption and reflection of certain colours by the petals of that flower. Most o f the plants parts including flower petals contain various pigments such as chlorophyll, carotene, anthocyanin, etc.

These pigments, depending on their concentration, absorb certain wavelengths of a white light, and reflect the other wavelengths, which in turn gives the colour to a plant part. The red rose petals contain anthocyanins, which reflect mostly the red colour with a little blue or violet colour, thus giving the red colour to the rose petals.

The white flowers may have the pigments or air spaces in the petals, which reflect the entire white light shining on them and thus giving the white colour. The black colour is just an opposite phenomenon to white colour. In this ease, the object has to absorb the entire white light shining on it and thus giving the black colour to that object.

The brightly coloured flower is an essential part for most plants, since they have to attract the pollinators. It is rare to have a black coloured flower in nature. Pollination is an important process in a plant’s lifecycle, since its reproduction depends on this process.

Insects such as bees, butterflies, moths, beetles and flies are well known pollinators. The brightly coloured flowers attract the insect pollinators, which ensure their eventual fruit and seed setting. Moths are active during the night time, and hence most of the night blooming flowers which are pollinated by moths produce white or pale coloured flowers. Thus the flower colours, although they are not the only factor in pollination process, have long co-evolutionary relationship with their insect pollinators, and hence most flowers are varyingly coloured, but not black.(a)Choose the correct answer: (4x1=4)

(i) What is called white light?1.moon light 2. Day light 3. Sunlight 4. Bright light

(ii) What gives colour to any object? 1.reflected sunlight 2. Refracted sunlight 3.deflected sunlight 4. Absorbed sunlight

Part – B (5 X 16 = 80 Marks)11. Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow it. The latest buzz word in the continuing debate about the environment is 'sustainable management' - that means using plants and animals for our own benefit, but ensuring that enough are left alive to guarantee the survival of the species. This sounds good, but is it practical in reality? In spite of years of scientific research, no-one really knows how much damage human beings are doing to their environment. We know that they are responsible for many problems

ranging from global warming to ozone depletion, and there is no doubt that they have a devastating effect on animal and plant life on Earth.

About 50,000 animal and plant species are becoming extinct every year. All species depend in some way on one another for survival. If you remove one species from this complex web of interrelationships, we have little idea of the repercussions on the ecosystem in general.

What makes things more complicated is the fact that unlike global warming - which, if the political will was there, could be reduced by cutting gas emissions - preserving bio-diversity remains a difficult dilemma. There are also questions about whether sustainable management is practical as far as protecting areas of great bio-diversity such as the world's tropical forests are concerned. In theory, the principle should be the same as with elephants; i.e. to cut a number of trees, but not so many as to completely destroy the forest.

Sustainable management of trees requires controls on the number of trees which are cut down as well as investment in replacing them. Most tropical forests exist in poor countries which depend on logging to make money. For most loggers in these countries, making money means cutting down as many trees as possible in the shortest time. The prices of trees remain stable, varying by 4-5% annually, whereas interest rates in most developing countries can create 15% or more in returns. It therefore makes little sense, and certainly no economic sense, to delay tree-felling.

One solution could be to insist that wood comes from sustainably managed forests. In theory, consumers would buy only this wood and force logging companies to go "green" or else out of business. Unfortunately, unrestricted logging is more profitable than wood from sustainably managed forests which would cost up to 5 times more to control. Consumers would not be prepared to pay the extra sum just to protect the environment.

The sad fact is that there is no practical solution to protecting vegetation and wildlife of tropical forests in the future. It is estimated that these forests contain anything from 50 to 90 per cent of all animals and plant species on Earth. In one study of a 5km square area of rain forest in Peru, for example, scientists counted 1,300 species of butterfly and 600 species of bird. In the entire USA only 400 species of butterfly and 700 species of bird have been recorded. Sustainable management represents a gigantic experiment. If this doesn't work, we can't move to another planet to escape. It's a case of one planet, one experiment!

PART – ‘B’ (5 x 16 = 80 marks)11. i) Read the passage and answer the questions given below:

Ethanol is a renewable, domestically produced transportation fuel. Whether used in lowlevelblends, such as E10 (10% ethanol, 90% gasoline), or in E85 (a gasoline-ethanol blendcontaining 51% to 83% ethanol, depending on geography and season), ethanol helpsreduce imported oil and greenhouse gas emissions. Like any alternative fuel, there aresome considerations to take into account when contemplating the use of ethanol.About two-thirds of U.S. petroleum demand is in the transportation sector. Approximatelyhalf of U.S. petroleum is imported. Depending heavily on foreign petroleum supplies putsthe United States at risk for trade deficits, supply disruption, and price changes. TheRenewable Fuels Association's 2012 Ethanol Industry Outlookcalculated that in 2011 the

ethanol industry replaced the gasoline produced from more than 485 million barrels ofimported oil. Ethanol represents 25% of domestically produced and refined motor fuel forgasoline engines.

A gallon of ethanol contains less energy than a gallon of gasoline. The result is lower fueleconomy than a gallon of gasoline. The amount of energy difference varies depending onthe blend. For example, E85 has about 27% less energy per gallon than gasoline (mileagepenalty lessens as ethanol content decreases). However, because ethanol is a high-octanefuel, it offers increased vehicle power and performance.

Ethanol production creates jobs in rural areas where employment opportunities areneeded. According to Renewable Fuels Association, ethanol production in 2011 supportedmore than 400,000 jobs across the country, $42.4 billion to the gross domestic product, and$29.9 billion in household income.

The carbon dioxide released when ethanol is burned is balanced by the carbon dioxidecaptured when the crops are grown to make ethanol. This differs from petroleum, which ismade from plants that grew millions of years ago. On a life cycle analysis basis, cornbasedethanol production and use reduces greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) by up to 52%

compared to gasoline production and use. Cellulosic ethanol use could reduce GHGs by asmuch as 86%.

Low-level ethanol blends are already in more than 95% of the gasoline sold in the UnitedStates. Low-level blends require no special fueling equipment and can be used in anygasoline vehicle. E85 fueling equipment is only slightly different than petroleum fuelingequipment, but the costs are higher. FFVs are available nationwide as standard equipmentwith no incremental costs, making them an affordable alternative fuel vehicle option. However, because most U.S. ethanol plants are concentrated in the Midwest, fuelingstations offering E85 are predominately located in the Corn Belt states. More and morestates are installing E85 every day. Find E85 fuelling stations in your area.

11. ii) Read the excerpts from an interview with the former President of India APJ Abdul Kalam and answer the questions given below:

Today, greatness is largely measured by material wealth, and this in turn bringsabout discontent in society. Do you feel there is a need for us to shun materialism asyour father and elders did?

I studied till High School in British India. In 1947, we got freedom and I started living inIndia’s India. I have seen various transformations in society, be it the economy or the valuesystem. While our economy is developing, we need citizens with ethics and a valuesystem. For the last 10 years I’ve been promoting an idea called Evolution of EnlightenedCitizens. It has three dimensions. One is education with value system. This comes from thefamily, or may be from a primary school teacher. After all, the evolution of enlightenedcitizens is essential for India and the world. Second, the dimension is economic prosperity.Third, religion should transform into a spiritual force. I advocate these three.I have given lectures in our Parliament, addressed the European parliament of 23 nations, apan-African parliament of 53 nations, and the Korean parliament. I am not saying theIndian value system should be taken to other countries. They also have great leaders andtraditions based on their value system. I believe that one’s value system, the joint familysystem, economic growth and different religions transforming into a spiritual force arevital. That’s why I have shared this at various interactive forums.

youth. However, as we see the country deluged with problems such as hunger, disease, deteriorating environment and unfit living conditions, how long will it take tosee change, or is it already visible?

Thought is the seed of action. Thought is as ancient as Socrates. Tiruvalluvar, 2,200 yearsago, has also said that…That’s why I proposed in Parliament that we need India Vision2020. That is, by 2020, India should become economically developed. Even now, it’s nottoo late. Parliament should consider how it can activate the vision for the nation, soprosperity can be aimed at. Our priority should be to use PURA – ‘providing urbanamenities in rural areas’. Our farmers are producing 250 million tonnes of food. But wedon’t do value addition, which means greater export potential. We are leading producers offruits and vegetables but we don’t process these as juice or packaged food. And third, ofcourse, small scale industries which are spread across the country.

Are you in touch with the PURA projects, and are these showing results?

I have seen in Madhya Pradesh, the Chitrakoot PURA founded by NanajiDeshmukh. He isa pioneer and they are doing very well, more than 500 villages are connected, and there is

prosperity. Another one I saw in Maharashtra, Warana PURA. There is no poverty there, because the cooperative movement is doing very well. And the third I have seen in TamilNadu at Vallam, Thanjavur.I am in touch with these three, and visit them often. But apartfrom that, the Government of India has started a few PURAs with public-privateparticipation. The number of PURAs is increasing. But it has to be fast. After all, there are600,000 villages; we have to establish 7000 PURAs in 10-15 years’ time. We have lessthan 100.

Your writing reflects great contentment, yet this never stops you from action.

God helps only those who work hard. There is nothing like contentment. Success is not theultimate aim. However, at no time should you allow your problems to overwhelm you. Ican’t say that I am content, because I meet 80,000 to 100,000 youth a month. I know theirdreams, their pain. A nation without a vision dies. Parliament has to give this vision.

Write short answers for the following questions: (4 x 2 = 8)

1) Kalam says: ‘A nation without vision dies.’ Comment on this statement.2) How do PURA projects make the country achieve economic prosperity?
