RecruitmentA company would

1. Carry out a needs analysis to see what kind of job is available and what sort of person would best fit the need2. Write a job description: details of job /location / duties / equipment - so candidates can see what the job involves3. Write a person specification: personal qualities / qualifications / work experience / skills needed - so the employer can shortlist who “best fits” for interview4. Design a job advert and advertise; on Internet, notice board, job centre, with an agency, in a newspaper or magazine5. Candidates for the job fill out an application form / CV and covering letter saying why they want the job6. The firm will shortlist candidates to interview7. The interview may consist of a role play, simulation, questions or giving a presentation. Teachers have to teach a lesson! 8. The firm may carry out selection tests; intelligence tests or personality tests (to see if they fit with company culture) or aptitude tests (e.g. a typing test)9. The company may then take up references from previous employer or school before offering the job10. The successful candidate then gets a contract of employment which states; hours, pay, holiday, notice period, length of contract, start and finish times

Hint: Role Play, simulation, presentation, interview, aptitude test. What do you think would be most suitable? NOT driving

HINT: the worker is a water delivery driver and a sales person. What would motivate them most?

Page | 7

HINT: you can’t lose whichever choice you pick make sure you say why you rejected the other idea. Need to give a judgement for the top marks. “I think that Danielle should....”

Employment LawYou don’t need to remember the name of the Act or the date, you just have to know what they do and why they are important.

Equal Pay Act; men and women doing same job must get same pay

Race relations Act; prevents discrimination against people of different races; prevents black or white people being promoted just because of their race

Sex discrimination Law; to prevent men / women from being treated differently at work

Health and safety at work regulations; to protect workers, provide safety equipment like hard hats and warning signs

Minimum wage; to protect employees against exploitation £5.80 over 22, different rates for different age groups

Employment rights laws; need to be given a written contract, details hours / pay holidays etc

Page | 9

HINT: one mark for naming the law and the other mark for saying what the law does.

HINT: This is a Higher question!

Gross pay would be basic + over time so.....

Piece rate pros

Piece rate cons

Overtime pros

Overtime cons

When a business lays off staff due to:

Redundancy pay

Page | 11

DismissalThis is where a worker is sackedThis may be because

The worker broke their contract The worker failed to turn up for work Gross misconduct e.g arrived drunk

If the worker thinks it was unfair dismissal he can take it to an employment tribunal

HINT: simplify the sum:

5 years x £290 per year + 25%

To get the % you have to divide by 100 then times by the number. Simple.

companyInduction trainingWhen you are new to a company you will get induction training
