Examples of Disclaimer Language:

Some reports might require disclaimers of various sorts. Below are some examples that serve different functions. These are taken from past Arctic Council documents.

a. Event Reports:

“This document reflects proceedings of a workshop held in _________ and, as such, the contents provide guidance. Any language used herein is not prescriptive.” [Source: AMATII, 2012]

b. Views Expressed:

“…the people responsible for the views expressed in the different chapters of the report are, in the first instance, the authors themselves. While mandated by governments, the report reflects neither the joint position of the Arctic Council nor the policies of its Member States.” [Source: AHDR, 2004]

“This project was undertaken as an approved project of the Arctic Council Sustainable Development Working Group…. The project report was prepared by a project team and does not necessarily reflect the policy or positions of any Arctic State, Permanent Participant or Observer of the Arctic Council.” [Source: BEPOMAR, 2009]

c. Data Limitations:

“…the data and results presented here cannot be considered to be a complete overview of __________ in the Arctic. This report and the responses on which it is based represent only a first step towards understanding the topic.” [VACCA, 2009]

d. Technical Interpretation:

“Descriptions in this AOR Final Report of international law, including as reflected in the 1982 Law of the Sea Convention, as well as other instruments, measures and arrangement are included for the benefit of the reader only and are not intended to constitute interpretations by the Arctic Council, its working groups, or Arctic states.” [Arctic Ocean Review, 2013]

Use and Placement of Logos:

Once project, conference or workshop reports or other documents have been finalized and approved by the SDWG, it is important to ensure that the SDWG and Arctic Council logo are prominently displayed on the cover and in other parts of the final printed or online documents, as appropriate.

High resolution logos can be obtained from the Executive Secretary at the SDWG Secretariat: [email protected].

Where appropriate, other elements of the SDWG logos can be included:
