What are we doing? I’m confused. (Since you were absent when we unpacked this unit, you should start by reading all of the project instructions.) You are doing an in-depth analysis of a career of your choice to discover everything you have to do to succeed in that career—including education/training, internships, interviewing, etc. You’re also creating support documents you’ll need for success such as a couple of different resumes and cover letters for different points in your life so you can see the difference between an high school resume, college/early training resume, and experienced career resume. You’ll be part of an interview team and be interviewed for a job in your selected field. You’ll do some analysis and reflection on what you want out of life and how well your plan for yourself matches up with your vision of your future. You’ll end the unit (semester exam) with a presentation of your ten year plan—this presentation is about a 90% match with your required senior presentation for Knight Skills.

How many interview questions? About 6 interview questions and 2 or 3 good follow up questions.

How to write interview questions. I’ll teach you with a plethora of examples and put examples on our website for you to access and tweak to use in the interview. These examples include questions for the interviewer to ask and for the interviewee to ask.

What questions do we have to ask after the interview? I’ll show you some examples. Basically, you’re asking clarifying questions about the position and/or the company. This time is an opportunity to demonstrate that you’ve done a little research into the company and/or to show that you have some understanding of some aspects of the job and/or that you’ve thought about the potential work environment. You can also use these questions to show your work ethic and desire for success.

How do you do a Lifestyle Presentation? I have detailed outline created for you. The subtopics of the outline are the same as your senior presentation outline for Knight Skills. Under each subheading, I have specific questions for you to address—these questions are based on the research you will have completed.

How does a professional thank you note look? I will show you some examples. You’ll need to include something specific from the interview.

Page 4: €¦  · Web viewYou are doing an in-depth analysis of a career of your choice to discover ... with a presentation of your ten year plan—this ... In a Word document,

Does the presentation have to be 10-15 minutes long? This timeframe is an estimate on my part based on what I have required you to include and based on years of experience and based on your senior presentation requirements.

What do you include in your cover letter? The cover letter is a narrative expressing your interest in a specific position within a company. It is an opportunity to tell your potential employers something about yourself that doesn’t show up on your resume and would pique their interest in you as an employee. I’ll show you some examples.

What should you thank them for? You send the thank you letter immediately after the interview thanking them for interviewing you. You mention something specific from the interview that you found interesting or intriguing or that you appreciate about the people or the company. I’ll show you some examples.

When is this project due? The Dossier is due by December 4th. Interviews are due between Dec. 8th and Dec. 19th—we’ll rotate through the groups. The paper work is due by January 9th. Presentations will begin January 12th and go through January 29th.

How long will this project take? 2 months.

What’s in a dossier? You’ll find your internship and research the company. In a Word document, you’ll write up the information you find about the company and the details of what the internship requires. You’ll give all of these documents to your Industry Team to review and use to write your interview questions.

What will be in the thank you letter? In addition to literally saying thank you for the interview, you will also mention something specific from the interview that you enjoyed, and reiterate your desire to work for that company.

What constitutes an interview question? See previous answer above.

How do I set up an interview and where is the interview? For this project I will set up the interview for you in the library. In real life, you will submit an application, resume, and cover letter to a company and your potential employer will contact you to set up an interview at a designated location (if he/she is interested in you based on the paper work you submit).

Are we able to job shadow while this is happening? Yes.

What is penalties for improper presentation time management? I’m not quite sure I understand the question, but I’ll give it a go! The 10-15 minute time frame is an approximation of how long it will take you to share everything that is required. I

Page 12: €¦  · Web viewYou are doing an in-depth analysis of a career of your choice to discover ... with a presentation of your ten year plan—this ... In a Word document,

cannot permit you to take much longer than 15 minutes because everyone needs an opportunity to present so I have to manage class time in that manner. If you mismanage your time and are not ready to present…this presentation is your final exam. You cannot earn credit for the course without completing your final exam. You will earn an incomplete for the course if you don’t finish and present before the end of January.

How many interview questions do we need? About 6 as the interviewer and about 2-3 as the interviewee.

Is it just a 2 person interview? No. You will be grouped together into Industry Teams based on your career choices (i.e. one Industry Team will be for medical personnel, one Industry Team will be for engineers, etc.)

What does it mean by coming up with a company name? You will conduct research and find a company for whom you are interested in working in real life.

What needs to be included in the interview questions? You will ask questions about skills, experience, education, philosophy, strengths, weaknesses, etc. We’ll look at some examples together. New Questions:

What does a company write up look like? It can be in paragraph form, bulleted info, or a combination thereof. You’ll include important details about the company like who they are, their purpose, their philosophy or mission, how large they are, how long they’ve been around, etc.

How to make a comparison between lifestyle and lifestyle inventory. The Lifestyle Inventory is a form you filled out last year as part of the required documents in your Knight Skills Portfolio (you may want to update this form). The comparison is an essay in which you compare the lifestyle you want to have with the lifestyle you’ll actually be able to afford with the career you have chosen.

What is a dossier and how do you create it? A dossier is a collection of important documents. In this project, your dossier will contain the information you have researched about your company and internship. You will share this dossier with your Industry Team, so it will need to be complete by December 8th.

Research support. I don’t know what you want to know. You’ll have to put this request in the form of a question.

Lifestyle Analysis Essay. The Lifestyle Inventory is a form you filled out last year as part of the required documents in your Knight Skills Portfolio (you may want to update this form). The comparison is an essay in which you compare the lifestyle you want to have with the lifestyle you’ll actually be able to afford with the career you have chosen to research. You’ll talk about housing, transportation, clothing, entertainment, gadgets, insurance, etc. Everything that makes up a lifestyle.

Will you give us a step by step plan to follow when it comes to our research on our career? Yes, it’s already on our website.

6 th Period Questions:

Will we be comparing to business leaders, etc.—No.

Will we be working in more groups—a little bit in writing interview questions.

Will we get to practice before we get interviewed—that could happen.

Would we do this in real life? Thank you note even if we don’t get hired? In real life, you send the thank you note immediately after the interview, before a decision has been made. Doing so puts your name in front of the hiring personnel again and ingratiates you to them.

More details about the lifestyle essay: The Lifestyle Inventory is a document you completed as a junior in Knight Skills (you can complete it again this year if you didn’t do it last year or if you want to update it.) You’ll write about the type of lifestyle you would like to live and compare that with the type of lifestyle you can actually afford based on your career choice.

What if they don’t hire you? (Does this have to do with the thank you note? If so, see response above.)

Do we have practice time before our actual interview? You can.

Why is the PowerPoint so long? The 10-15 minute timeframe matches pretty closely with the KS senior presentation time frame. You should need approximately that amount of time to discuss all the parts you need to include. In fact, some may struggle to finish in 15 minutes.

Do you have to compare all basic requirements to specific goals? I don’t understand what this question is asking. To which basic requirements are you referring? Which specific goals? What part of the project? Some of the overall goals of this project include figuring out exactly what you need to do to achieve the goals you have for yourself and determining if your goals are realistic and a good match for what you want in your life.

I would still like to know everything. What the project is on. See responses above. Read the assignment sheet I gave you. Read the posters that everyone else contributed. Basically, you are researching a career, discovering the specific steps it takes to be qualified and hired in this career field, comparing this career choice with the lifestyle you would like to lead, setting some specific goals, and figuring

Page 18: €¦  · Web viewYou are doing an in-depth analysis of a career of your choice to discover ... with a presentation of your ten year plan—this ... In a Word document,

out how you’re going to achieve your goals. The two main events are the interview and the presentation, but you will also submit paper work, too.

How do we pick a company? You’ll pick 2—they could be the same. The first one is for an internship—a starter place for your first career-job experience. The second is for when you have completed all of your education/training, have some experience, and are looking for your dream-job company. You will conduct research to find an appropriate company for each choice. For the first one, you will begin with a website called InternMatch. For the 2nd one, you will begin with Google or prior knowledge.

What do we put in a 10-15 minute presentation? The exact requirements are written in the detailed question sheet that I had taped to the desk with section 8 Lifestyle Presentation. This document is also on our website under Unit 3. This 10-15 minute presentation is all about the research you’ve done on your career, your required education/training, the company you want to work for, the Lifestyle Inventory, one of your resume and cover letters, etc. It is about 90% (or more) correlated with your senior presentation.

How do you tell if you’ll be suited for a job? How do we know which career is right for us? You’ll select a career in a field that you find interesting. As you conduct your research on the topics required for the research report, you’ll discover more about the educational/training requirements to which you must commit and you should be able to decide if you’re willing to make that commitment. You’ll also learn more about what you do in this job and you should be able to decide if those tasks are appealing to you on a daily basis or if they will be too challenging or if you will be too bored. You will put together a vision of what kind of future you’d like to have—the lifestyle you’d like to live—and you’ll be able to decide, based on your research, if the career you have selected will be able to provide you with this lifestyle. If not, you’ll have to make some choices. There are a lot of factors to consider when deciding is the career is right for you. Please put a lot of serious thought into the feasibility of accomplishing the requirements and looking at the daily tasks/schedule of a person in this profession. You don’t want to invest a lot of time and/or money into becoming qualified only to discover you hate it! Talking with someone who does this job is a great idea. Ask them what they love about it. Ask them what they hate about it. Ask them what was most challenging in becoming qualified. Ask them, now that they’re in this profession, if they would have made any different choices if they could have a do-over.

What goes in a resume? It depends on your work experience, but basically, you’ll include education and work experience. Entry Level resumes (little or no work experience in the profession) often contain extracurricular info, interests, etc. More experienced professionals emphasize their work experience, leadership on the job, etc.

You’ll be amazed at how many questions that will answer. You should also check out the Detailed Questions sheet I posted on our website. You are doing an in-depth analysis of a career of your choice to discover everything you have to do to succeed in that career—including education/training, internships, interviewing, etc.
