Along with all the ticket sales we also received over $2,000 in monetary donations and almost $1000 donated by sponsors. Not only did we serve 3602 breakfasts on Fathers Day, we also had a successful bake sale and plant sale sponsored by our hard-working CIS. A couple of new displays generated a lot of excitement at the breakfast. This is a project we hope to expand over the coming year. Once again, I am very excited and looking forward to this new year and all the great projects and activities to come. Aloha, Lions, Cis, and Friends, I’m so humbled, excited, and proud to serve as your President for the next year. Mahalo to Past President & PDG Lion Roy Aoki for serving as our President for a second time. His guidance and leadership over this past year enabled the Hawaii Kai Lions Club to achieve another successful year of community service. I will surely be utilizing his knowledge and experience for assistance over the next year.

Mahalo to all the members of the Board of Directors, both past and present. We have several repeat members that will serve in different capacities, and several new Lions accepting the responsibility of a position on the board. We are looking forward to a fabulous year of fun projects and community service. I’d also like to call on all Hawaii Kai Lions to share any ideas for service projects that will keep us all involved in improving the lives of our Hawaii Kai community. Also, a big, big, mahalo to our members, their CIS and family members, and the “huge” numbers of volunteers who helped to make our 44th Annual Father’s Day Pancake Breakfast a gigantic success. This is our one fundraiser for the club each year, and it is an undertaking of epic proportions! The success of this event is a direct result of all the tireless efforts put forth by every one of you. We are still tallying up the numbers and have a couple more bills to pay and will report the final numbers once completed. Breakfast ticket sales by all of you added up to 3,602 by my last count. Mahalo to all who sold tickets to your families, friends, co-workers, clients and neighbors. Thanks also go out to Ken Nishibun who mapped out all the neighborhoods for our dedicated Lions to canvass every blazing-hot Sunday leading up to Fathers Day. Along with all the ticket sales we also received over $2,000 in monetary donations and almost $1000 donated by sponsors. Not only did we serve 3602 breakfasts on Father’s Day, we also had a successful bake sale and plant sale sponsored by our hard-working CIS. A couple of new displays generated a lot of excitement at the breakfast. Thank you to Peggy Oyama for her hard work at the Lions 100th year celebration tent, where you could take a picture and pick up a souvenir. Thank you to Eric Kvick and his wife for setting up and manning the Rescue Tube Project display. The Rescue Tube project was our newest project last year and it was the brainchild of Eric Kvick along with Bill Modglin’s assistance. Pancake Breakfast Recap

Submitted by Lion Prexy Jeanne Alices We can all be very proud of the work we do and Hawaii Kai Lions continues to set the standard for community service. We had the great honor of being recognized by the Hawaii State Senate with a framed certificate signed by every senator for our 44 years of dedicated service to the community. The certificate was a big surprise and was presented to us at the breakfast by State Senator Stanley Chang. President Jeanne hopes to get permission from the powers that be at Lunalilo Home, to display the certificate at the clubhouse.

Hawaii State Senate Recognition

Senator Stanley Chang presenting certificate to Lion Bill Modglin. Submitted by Pancake Breakfast Committee Chair Lion Rick Yee Another successful year! Although we had fewer experienced volunteers, we were thankful that with the help from our family members and friends, we were able to serve 3,600 people. The bake sale and the plant sale also added to making our annual fundraising event that Hawaii Kai residents look forward to every year.

District 50 New Officer Training

Submitted by Bulletin Editor Kendrick S. Chang On June 10th, Lions Jeanne Alices, Sandy Gomes, Kendrick Chang, and PDG Mervin Wee attended District 50’s Club Officer & Leadership Training. DG Blayne Hanagami gave a presentation of his goals and initiatives for the coming year. After the presentation, the officers split up into breakout sessions. PDG Mervin Wee led a presentation for Club Presidents and VPs. Lion Kendrick attended a session on online resources that are available to clubs through the LCI website. Overall, the training was a great networking event for the club officers and sharing opportunity of the various Lion community projects in District 50. DG Blayne even commended the Rescue Tube Project as a innovative service project during his presentation to all the officers in attendance.

Membership Corner

Committee Chairs Needed!

Bulletin Editor Note: I’m adding a new regular “Membership Corner” section in the monthly bulletin. This section serves as an opportunity for any member to share brief personal updates (career move, travels, grandchildren), friendly reminders, word of appreciation to another Lion. Please send me submissions in the future! -At the June 1st membership meeting, Brian Edward from the Geelong Corio Bay Lions Club visited our club while vacationing in Honolulu. As a small token, Brian gave our club a bunch of membership “Become a Lion” buttons. Mahalo Brian! -Lion Peggy Oyama and CIS Loyal Mehrhoff traveled to Chicago, Illinois for the 100th Lions Clubs International Convention (June 30th-July 4th 2017). Both Lions are attending the convention along with the 40-member strong Hawaii delegation. Safe travels Peggy and Loyal! -Lion Kendrick S. Chang is currently doing a summer internship at the Benn Pacific Group, a local real estate firm. Kendrick will be returning to Washington D.C for his junior year at the George Washington University in late August. -Lions Peggy Oyama and Kendrick S. Chang attended a joint officer installation meeting for the Moanalua and Kalakaua Lion Clubs on June 21st, 2017. -The Rescue Tube Project Committee will be moving into the next phase to distribute rescue tubes across Oahu. Submitted by Secretary Alvin Hayashibara As we enter the new 2017-2018 year, the Hawaii Kai Lions Club is in need of active members to step up as Chair for the following committees: -Cashier -Facilities Management -Kaiser High School -Recycle For Sight (used eyeglass recycling) -Youth Services & Recreation Although there is a co-chair for some of the committees, the chair position is currently vacant. In the event that the co-chair of these committees decide to step up, then a co-chair is needed to support the chair. Finally, this will be a good time for any member to join a committee that interests them. You can visit the committee page on the membership section of the club’s website to review all the committees. We will be asking for volunteers at the next membership meeting on July 6th. Mahalo!

Annual Membership Dues With the new Lion year, annual membership dues are currently being collected for the 2017-2018 fiscal year. Please write out a check to “Hawaii Kai Lions Club” and submit to Treasurer Erick Kvick this month. See below for the breakdown of membership costs.

Aloha Party– Thank you PDG Roy!

On June 23rd 2017, many Lion and CIS members came to the Aloha Party for a Potluck dinner at Secretary Alvin Hayashibara’s home. After dinner, everyone gathered at the living room to give PDG Roy Aoki a Presidential recap roast. As a token of appreciation, the club gave PDG Roy a collage of his most photogenic Lion photos to hang at his home. Thank you PDG Roy for your leadership! PDG Roy Aoki with collage gift!
