From the Principal“I am flawed, I am a good and gifted person, I am called to offer my gifts” – Pope Francis

At Galen Catholic College we are committed to a pathway of continuous improvement.

Already this year, our Year 12 students have all spent 3 days of reflection, prayer and clarifying their goals for 2015 and beyond.

This year, we have added to that experience with our inaugural Year 11 retreats, part of a Re-Connect program designed to help focus the hearts and minds of our senior students as they commence their final two years of secondary school. The Year 11s have all spent two days at Harrietville as the introduction to this program.

Meanwhile, half of our Year 9 students have spent 3 days at Mount Buffalo on this year’s first Year 9 Adventure Camp, learning basic bush skills of caving, hiking, camping, abseiling and canoeing. The other half of Year 9 will have their Adventure Camp in fourth term. In addition, 9/1 and 9/2 have participated in their overnight Discovery walks.

For many years, Galen has had an extraordinary Performing Arts program which features a major annual musical production for the whole school, and a junior musical production showcasing the talents of our younger students. In mid-February, our major production cast and production band spent 2 days at the Feathertop Chalet on the production camp as part of their preparations.

In the first seven weeks of 2015, we have also celebrated the VCE High Achievers from 2014, the AGM of the Friends of Galen Music, hosted porters from the Kokoda Trail, hosted the ANZAC Centenary Tour, completed the annual Swimming Sports, held an Open Afternoon for the parents of the new Year 7 students, completed the School Photos, had our first Soup Van trip to help Melbourne homeless, held an amazing Trivia Night in support of our upcoming student and staff trips to Timor L’Este, welcomed authors Emile Zoe Baker for the Year 8 students and Scott Gardner for the Year 9s, held several Outdoor Education trips for Years 10, 11 and 12, marked Ash Wednesday with school-wide liturgies and sent a team to the Upper Hume Swimming Carnival.

Then last week, we were blessed by a visit from Bishop Les Tomlinson, along with Fr Mike, Fr Joseph and Fr Pompeyo from the Wangaratta parishes. They concelebrated two Opening Masses: one for the Years 10-12 students and the other for the Years 7-9 students. These masses were each followed by an assembly celebrating student achievement from 2014 and musical talent from now.

As a staff dedicated to our own professional improvement, we look towards the future with confidence and careful strategic planning. Over 2015 and 2016, we will conduct a complete review of our curriculum and continue our professional learning and action research into the range of most appropriate learning styles for our students as they prepare to face their own futures. These ongoing learnings from the two major areas of curriculum structure and learning / teach-ing approaches will in turn inform the finer details of our long-term Master Plan, launched last year. We anticipate that Stage 1 of this Master Plan will commence late this year.

We already have a number of small action research programs under way designed to improve the learning opportunities and outcomes for our students. As a staff, we aim to be living examples of “life-long learners”, encouraging and inspiring the young people in our care to live full lives, make the most of their opportunities and to be the best they can be.

It is without doubt one of the most anticipated camps held at Galen. Often past students refer to the year nine adventure camp as “the best camp ever”. This camp offers some exceptional opportunities for students in 9.5, 9.6, 9.7 & 9.8 to challenge themselves and to work in a team-building environment. Each day students had the option of participating in canoeing on the beautiful Lake Catani, abseiling down 30 meter granite cliffs, bushwalking along Mount Buffalo’s many walking tracks, rock climbing giant granite boulders at the Chalwell Galleries and caving along underground creeks. Thank you to Adventure Guides Australia. As usual the staff were extremely professional. Another highlight was definitely the food, roast pork and beef, chicken parmigiana and hot jam donuts. Also thank you to the staff who seemed to enjoy this adventure camp just as much as the students. These include Kelly Smith, Tom Anson, Ashlee Burke, Rob Parsons, Sam Naish, Rob Spencer, Stephen Rosicka, Nick Beattie, Carolyn Trethowan, Ren Seymour, Mim Murray, Liz Cox, Brian Carr, Ben Talarico, Rob Speziale, Sarah Hynes and Jayden Burt.

Exchange Student ProfileMy name is Stephanie Bachmann, I’m 16 years old and I come from Switzerland. It was always a dream of mine to do an exchange in Australia. I wanted to come into the heat and as far away from home as I could. My goals are to learn fluent English and to get to know the country and its culture.

I really like Galen Catholic College because of the relaxed school environment and teaching style. It is absolutely different to the school in my country. Our teachers are stricter and we don’t have a lot of choices. In Switzerland we can’t choose our subjects. I enjoy it here, to do what I really like. But we don’t have any school uniforms, which I like.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE A HOST FAMILY?

Galen is looking for generous families willing to host a student from overseas.

In the past Galen families have hosted students from European countries such as Italy, France, Germany and Holland. Last year we also hosted two students from Indonesia. These exchanges will usually occur during term three and will last for 6 to 8 weeks. If you are interested in being a host family orsimply want to participate in an exchange program overseas, please contact Mr Franco Cudini at Galen.

PROJECT COMPASSIONOur annual “Project Compassion” (organised by Caritas, as the relief agency run by the Catholic Church of Australia) which occurs through Lent, is one of our major fundraising campaigns of the year. The 2015 Project Compassion campaign centres around “Food For Life” and so our unified fundraising approach at Galen is designed to emphasise that. Between Thursday March 19th and Thursday March 26th, homerooms will coordinate food related stalls called "Caritas Cafes” to raise funds for Caritas, so that they can give help to the poorest of the poor; helping people to help themselves.

Some homeroom groups have been very creative, organising stalls such as a Cold Rock Café, Lemonade Stand, Hot Dogs and Frozen Yoghurt, while others are choosing to fundraise in other ways, by hosting a Mini-golf and Paper Planes competition, Easter-Egg raffle, Guess the Lollies in the Jar and a Cupcake Decorating competition. And let’s not forget the legendary Bake Sale run by Mr and Mrs Hill’s homerooms, which always makes a substantial collection!

In order to ensure the success of these very important fundraising events and to support the students’ enthusiasm and drive to “be more”, we are seeking contributions to help reduce the costs associated with the Cafes, so that the funds we raise can go directly to Caritas Australia. Generous donors from within the school community and beyond are the key to our success, and make it possible for our students to make a difference for disadvantaged and underprivileged families of the world. We hope that we can count on your support to help us.

CARITAS KsStudents in Year 7 & 8 are now preparing for the “Walk for Water”, a unique event held at Galen as our annual Caritas Ks event. In a recent assembly, I asked the students to think about the longest distance they’ve ever walked and why? Principal, Mr Neal also addressed the students at our Opening Masses last week, imploring them to be grateful; considering how lucky they are to go home each night and rest, for having fresh food at our dinner tables and water on tap. They were also encouraged to think about the challenges that the poor and disadvantaged people have to face every

Social Justice Newsday, just to collect water to survive; not to brush their teeth, wash their cars or swim and play in it like we do here in Wangaratta.

Our Walk for Water calls upon students to walk kilometres for compassion, and provides students with an opportunity to "be more" and "be a voice" for the poorest people in our world. By taking part in the Caritas Ks event, students can also raise money through an act of solidarity with people who have to cover many kilometres just to access fresh water for survival, attend school or work, or flee from natural disasters or conflict.

The Walk for Water will take place on the Oval, every period of every day in the last week of this term, from Monday 23rd March through to Thursday 26th March. Every Year 7 and 8 class will participate in our fundraising and awarenessraising walk with their RE teachers, while staff have volunteered to join in the solidarity action, offering to continue the Walk for Water through the recess and lunch breaks. The class groups will walk together as a “village” and be asked to carry as much water as they can around the oval using containers of various size and structure, while taking on the physical characteristics and ailments of the people who walk for water for their survival.Families and friends, you are invited to support the cause by sponsoring your son or daughter and making a small donation. For the first time, you can do this online. Each student in the school is encouraged to join the Galen Catholic College “team” by registering as a team member on the Caritas Ks website. 1. Go to: http://my.caritasfundraising.org.au/galen_catholic_college2. Click on “Join Team” and create your own fundraising page, which is affiliated with the school page.3. Copy and paste the link to your fundraising page and send on to your extended family and friends.

“Caritas Ks is an opportunity to educate people in social justice, with the aim of inspiring them to “be more” and “be a voice” for the poorest in our world while also raising money to support the work of Caritas Australia.” www.caritas.org.au

ZontaBreakfast

The annual Zonta Girls Breakfast is in its 9th year this year. Held at the Gateway Hotel, it is an opportunity for girls in Year 11 to explore different careers. This year there were 90 participants from 5 schools in the region, 23 were from Galen.

The breakfast is a valuable experience that the students from Galen enjoyed and found helpful as they navigate choices and pathways that are available. Girls are organised into table groups with a female mentor from the local community who works in the field the girls have shown interest in. The girls have the chance to ask questions and develop contacts through the mentor, and can also go to other tables to meet mentors in other careers.

This year there were three Keynote speakers from a variety of fields who discussed their career pathways and passed on some valuable lessons and advice. The key messages that struck a chord with all audience members were;• Have a plan B• Set a goal and a direction to aim for• Don’t be afraid to be scaredThe speakers through their experiences were able to demonstrate that the road to a successful career is not always in a straight and smooth line, but that there are a variety of ways to get there provided you have a goal and persistence.

The messages from the morning I’m sure would resonate with many of our senior students. We are fortunate to have the opportunity to attend and we look forward to Galen girls enjoying the experience again next year.

VCAL guide Year 8s in MathsThe VCAL Year 12 Numeracy students recently completed a Mathematics lesson as cross age tutors with Year 8s in 8.6. In this lesson the VCAL students were able to tutor the junior students about Measurement Conversions.

Activities ranged from measurement bingo, online conversion games, an exploration of volume with 3D shapes and measuring the distance of casting a fishing line.

The cross age tutoring lesson proved rewarding for both year levels. More tutoring activities will be planned in the near future.

How many people have made a bucket list in their lives and have never fulfilled their dreams?I had the amazing opportunity to take a 14-hour trip along the Great Ocean Road during the long weekend and was able to sign off many things on my wish list, which made me so happy.I took a bus tour early on Saturday morning departing from Geelong that took me all the way down the Great Ocean Road. The weather was windy and cold; tourists had jackets and raincoats and our tour guide, Dave, who was young and friendly, kept complaining about the weather. But to me it was perfect; it made me feel even more adventurous and free. There was nothing that could take away my happiness. We passed through the surfing Capital of Torquay where we made our first stop at Bell’s beach. There we were welcomed by a crowd of cheerful surfers. We then continued onto Lorne, the beautiful summer vacation spot where we had our morning tea on picnic tables overlooking the bay, it was simply amazing. Before long we made our third stop in the middle of the road where many koalas where enjoying their time napping and curiously looking at us through the gumtree leaves. One of them was even awake and courageous enough to wobble through the crowd of tourists to climb to the next tree.It was not before long that we had our lunch break in Apollo Bay, and then continued onto the mainland towards the Great Otway Forest. It was a completely different environment full of massive trees, snails, green ferns, waterfalls, and narrow walk tracks. It started raining after a while so we all made our way back to the van and continued our journey along the cost. After about an hour of driving, we arrived at what was the most attended stop of the day: The 12 Apostles. It was indeed a miracle of nature. I felt overwhelmed by how much beauty there was in that place. I looked the waves crashing by and understood that it was only a matter of time until there wouldn’t be any left. Time would eventually make its course and all that beauty will slowly disappear. One of my favourite spots was the Gipson Steps. I went all the way down onto the beach, where the light of the sun was glimmering through the waves and people were strolling along the seashore for a nice evening walk. Our last stop was Lock Ard Gorge, a closed up bay famous for having only two survivors, filled with caves and interesting rock formations. We then made our way back, tired but satisfied. It was a long day but seeing all those majestic things was absolutely worth the long trip. I would recommend both to foreigners and Australians to visit all these great places.

Rural City of WangarattaAccessibility for All

Have Your Say...

One in five people in our community have some form of disability and as a result, they may experience barriers to access and inclusion on a daily basis. It is important that information, services, buildings and facilities are accessible and welcoming to people with various disabilities.

As part of its current review of the Rural City of Wangaratta Community Access and Inclusion Plan, Council has launched a month long survey for March and is keen to have input from people with a broad range of lived experiences on how to make our municipality a more inclusive and accessible place for everyone who lives or visits here.

By completing the Accessibility For All survey you will be providing Council with valuable information to improve access in our community as well as chance to win a double pass to one of Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre’s Season shows.

The survey is available online via the Rural City of Wangaratta website www.wangaratta.vic.gov.au and closes 31 March. Phone 5722 0720 for a paper copy of the survey.
