Two charged with robbery MATAWAN TOWNSHIP Two men have been released in bail following their arraignment Monday on charges of armed robbery of Hub Cap Joe’s Service Station, Route 35, Saturday night. Arthur Parker, 18, of C'onvery Boulevard. Perth Amboy, and Michael Hoelz, 18. of 141 McKinley Ave., Laurence Harbor, appeared before Municipal Judge Lloyd Elgart, who set their bail at $2,500 and $100 respectively. The men were arrested Sunday following an investi- gation by Detectives Stan Parrish and Kenneth W'ick- lund. Police said two men entered the service station. one wielding a hunting knife. The men reportedly fled in a green and white Rambler, taking approximately $200 which Ihe attendant had turned over to them. Less than 20 minutes later, police said, Ptl. Ronald Mesar spotted a vehicle that fitted that description on Ocean Boulevard, Cliffwood Beach. The suspects were arrest- ed the next day, police said. The hunting knife alleged- ly used in the holdup was found in the vehicle, and $2o:i was recovered from the suspects, police said. The vehicle, police said, had a "Support Your Law E n forcem ent Agency” sticker on Ihe back window. Holmdel leases land as site for post office Bv Joe King HOLMDEL The Township Committee Monday night unanimously adopted an ordinance au- thorizing the leasing of municipal land on Craw- ford's Corner-Everett Road to the U.S. Postal Service. The Postal Service will build and maintain a post office on Ihe site, which was leased for 20 years, with five-year renewals available up to a total of 55 years. I?\ l)a\ id Thaler H.VZI.KT Democrats were assured of their first primary battle in four years when Township Committeeman William Bourbeau announced last night that he would fight the party's decision not to slate him for re-election. Charging that the Legion was dumping on the banks of Luppalatong Creek, the slale issued a cease-and-desist order April 4. “ We senl the order by certified m ail, but il wasn't received until April 11.” said Donald T. Graham, super- visor of permits and licenses for the Division of Marine Services. “They have five working days to respond." Graham said he had talked lo the Legion's attorney, and he was certain "they will react in tim e." The stale's order does not require the Legion to slop work on Ihe 10-story build - ing, Graham said. "It's not a total cease-and-desist order." ho said. The Legion can continue construction work, he added, "as long as they do not dump" on the wetlands or riparian lands. a third term was not unexpected. "For the past few months, our leader has been asking tor new faces," he said. "11 was obvious to me he didn't want the old ones." Bourbeau said he didn't know why municipal leader Francis X Shields opposed his nomination, but he pointed oul that he had voted against Shields’ appointment as township treasurer "Thai probably stuck in somebody's craw," Bour- beau said. II he loses the prim ary battle, Bourbeau said, he w ill not run as an hide pendent in November. Kupfer said he would not support Bourbeau in the prim ary. "I am going along wilh Ihe Democratic party's wishes.” Kupfer said. "I think Bill would have done the same thing if I had been dropped." Kupfer said he and Bour- beau had an inkling both of us were in trouble" when they were interviewed by the executive committee lasl Wednesday. "I owe it lo the people who supported me in the past," Bourbeau.said in announcing his decision to run in the primary. Asked why he thought he had been dropped by the party, Bourbeau said,"pos- sibly because I wasn’t a rubber stamp." In addition to opposing Shields’ appointment as treasurer, he said, he had voted against Constance Peters’ appointment as assistant treasurer. Mrs. Peters, vice chairman of the party, lost by a narrow margin in her bid lasl year for a seal on the Township Committee. Specifications for the post office are now being prepar- ed by an architect, and the township hopes bids will be awarded by the end of June. The committee also adopt- ed an ordinance authorizing a ground lease to Ihe Holmdel First Aid Squad. A squad building will be built on Ihe site, and the commit tee hopes construction will be completed this year.
