Masterclass with Brian Ganz
Brian Ganz conducts a masterclass with young pianists from the studios of several NVMTA pianist-teachers.
Saniya Han, a student of Jim Litzel-man, will play the Prelude in D flat Major by Ronald Gliere. Roman Kas-parian, student of Margarita Gramaticova, will play the Im-promptu, Opus 142, No. 3, by Franz Schubert and Michelle Papenfuss, student of Yoshinori Hosaka, will play the Sonata, Opus 109, An-dante molto cantabile ed espressivo by Ludwig van Beethoven.
Brian Ganz is regarded as one of the leading pianists of his gen-eration. In 1989, he was the recipient of one of two First Grand Prizes at the Marguerite Long Jacques Thibaud International Pi-ano Competition in Paris. He was awarded a Beethoven Fellow-ship by the American Pianists Association in 1989 and in 1991 was a silver medalist at the Queen Elisabeth International Piano Competition in Belgium. He made his recording debut in 1992 performing works by Chopin and Dutilleux and in 2001 em-barked upon a recording project for Maestoso Records that will encompass the complete works of Chopin.
Mr. Ganz is a graduate of the Peabody Conservatory of Music
where he studied with Leon Fleisher. He is currently a member
of the piano faculty at the Peabody Conservatory and Artist-in-

President’s Message
As I write this, the directory has finally been mailed to each of you. I apologize for the tardiness of this year’s directory, but fortunately, most of our pertinent information has been available on the website for some time.
I would like to publicly thank John DeGrazia and Bettye Cooley for their help in complet-ing the directory, as well as Julie Slingerland, Martha Smith and Amy Rothstein for their help in proof-reading. In addition to handling all of the advertising issues, Bettye completed the layout of the directory and assisted me at the printer’s. My hope is that next year we will move com-pletely online with our directory, saving us significant money in printing and mailing—approximately $3,000. This is money that can be better spent elsewhere.
Since the contact information for each of us is available to anyone who goes to the VMTA website, I would like to put all of our membership information on our own website later this year. This will enable us to update members’ contact information several times throughout the year, and I ask each of you to contact Amy Rothstein at [email protected] to make changes. This way, we can have a directory that is always up-to-date.
I wish each of you a holiday season filled with peace and harmony and time spent with those near and dear to you. I welcome your thoughts and suggestions as we continue to move the rest of our directory information online.

Superior: 2009 — 273 (56%) 2008 — 319 (55%) 2007 — (60%)
Excellent: 2009 — 188 (39%) 2008 — 154 (26%) 2007 — (32%)
Very Good: 2009 — 19 (4%) 2008 — 29 (5%) 2007 — (8%)
Incomplete: 2009 — 1 (<1%) 2008 — 2 (<1%) 2007— (.4%)

This Fall Festival surpassed our scheduling and organization expectations. Teachers and parents continued to express satisfaction with the flexibility and efficiency of the Over-flow/Self-Schedule Room.
Our goals for Fall Festival 2010 include lengthening performance times slightly to en-sure a similar smooth pace and reorganizing all materials for on-line registration.

A race for ever-greater virtuosity, with ac-
companying physical demands, has made today’s pianists wary of the tradition
Igor Toronyi-Lalic
Marc-André Hamelin is not easily fazed. The French-Canadian pianist is what they call a su-per virtuoso. Stick any bit of Liszt, Chopin, Rachmaninov, Ligeti or Messiaen in front of him — stick a bar code in front of him, in fact — and he’ll probably be able to play it. Next week, however, as he walks out on stage at the Wigmore Hall he might look a little more nervous than normal. Awaiting his fingers will be one the most frightening piano compositions ever written: Charles-Valentin Alkan’s Symphony for solo piano from his 12 Etudes.
