ONE BOOK/ONE CAMPUS PROGRAM A committee of faculty and students, which was coordinated by the Office of New Student and Family Programs, chose This is Our Story by Wendi Adelson as the 2014 common reading book to be used in the One Book / One Campus Program (see nsfp.fsu.edu/One-Book-One-Campus). This Is Our Story follows the lives of Rosa and Mila, two young women from different countries who become victims of human trafficking when duped into domestic servitude and commercial sexual exploitation in the American Southeast. Their experiences with the underbelly of globalization here in our own backyard, and the legal battles they wage against their traffickers with their immigration attorney, Lily, are told in their own voices, and hers, in vivid and compelling detail. There will be an Author Question & Answer and Book Signing event with Wendi Adelson on Monday, February 2, 2015 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm (doors open at 5:30pm) at the FSU Globe Auditorium. Please bring your book to meet Wendi and have your copy signed!

KNOWING YOUR RIGHTS The Center for Academic Retention and Enhancement (CARE) will be hosting a presentation for all students on “Knowing Your Rights”. It is an interactive presentation with Chief Perry on January 29 at 7:00pm in HCB 102. This presentation will go over how to interact with a police officer as well as understanding your rights as a citizen. Please encourage your students to attend. This is great information for all students to know.

WFSU WINTER RADIO MEMBERSHIP DRIVE

Volunteer with WFSU for the Winter Radio Membership Drive: Get service hours in a casual, fun environment, and get a behind-the-scenes look at how radio is made! WFSU is looking for volunteers to help answer phones during the Winter Radio Membership Drive from February 6 to February 13. Volunteers must be age 18+. Shifts are 1.5-2 hours long and

range from morning to evening and on Saturday. There is plenty of free parking on-site and snacks are provided! GIRLS ON THE RUN Girls on the Run (GOTR) is a national non-profit that provides an experience based curriculum to girls ages 8-13, that encourages them to be confident, joyful and healthy, while also creatively incorporating running (non-competitively). GOTR is now seeking coaches for the spring season that will begin in February. Teams meet twice a week for 1.5hrs, for 10 weeks, and seasons culminate with an end of season 5K that is truly something spectacular. Spring season will begin in February and end in early May. The girls walk away with lessons and confidence to last a lifetime, and you walk away knowing that you played a HUGE role. Most sites start around 3:00pm and end around 4:30pm. FLORIDA STUDENT LEADERSHIP FORUM ON FAITH & VALUES

The 23rd Florida Student Leadership Forum in Tallahassee is hosting its annual gathering Friday, March 6 through Sunday, March 8 and registration is currently open at flslf.org. This forum provides the opportunity for students to interact with people from diverse backgrounds who desire to learn about servant leadership, specifically based on the model of Jesus Nazareth. It includes hearing from state leaders, a tour of the House Chambers in the Capitol, a community service project and time together in small groups. Please note there is a forum fee associated with attending and transportation is not included. The application is open, however submitting your application is encouraged as soon as possible. RENAISSANCE COMMUNITY CENTER The Renaissance Community Center (RCC) is a local agency that services the homeless population in Tallahassee by serving as a “one-stop-shop” for resources and services. RCC is seeking volunteers Monday through Friday for morning and afternoon shifts this semester. Morning shifts are 8:30am to 11:30am and the afternoon shifts are 1:00pm to 4:30pm. If students can only come for two hours or so instead of the entire shift, RCC is willing to work with you. The tasks involved in volunteering result in a hands-on experience for students to get direct face-to-face contact with clients. Basically, volunteers perform an intake evaluation on clients entering the facility, help monitor the resources, and/or help a person with needs like applying for a job. VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE

In the early 70’s Gary Iskowitz, was doing graduate work as well as teaching tax law while working for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) agency. Mr. Iskowitz saw a growing problem with questionable tax preparers who were scamming low-income people in his area. He did not like what he saw! Consequently, he proposed training a few likeminded student volunteers to go into the community to prepare free tax returns for underserved residents. The rest, they say, is history! 40 years later, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) is still going strong. OPERATIONS STUDENT ASSISTANT

Center Operations Student Assistant (COSAs) are responsible for preforming a wide variety of important tasks at the Center for Leadership & Social Change such as assisting with daily operations and upkeep of the Center. Duties include: maintaining the department’s fleet of vans (filling up with gas, replenishing forms, data entry of mileage logs, transporting to/from the repair shop, etc.); organizing/cleaning spaces in the building (storage closets, work rooms, etc.); and helping with other special projects. COSAs will have the opportunity to cover the front desk as needed (answering phones and assisting visitors who come in seeking information or services). Students should be able to work 8 to 10 hours/week, Monday through Friday.
