How time flies. This year we are celebrating the 25th
Anniversary of being at the Mt Somers Lilyfields. We
arrived in the snow with a 5year old and 3 year old. It was
Queens Birthday weekend 1995. Some history of Lilyfields
Mt Somers is somewhat appropriate at milestones such as
this.
Dunhampton Lilyfields originated in the Taranaki. It was
purchased by the McIntosh family and shifted down to Mid
Canterbury (Willoby). The Keasts then purchased and
shifted the business to Mt Somers, John and Paddy
Millichamp bought the business in 1989 and then David & Wendy Millichamp purchased the business in
1995. In 2001 David & Wendy purchased the wholesale business of Lilies International 2001 Ltd off Bill
and Carol Doreen from Levin. A Wealth of Knowledge has been built up over the years with David also
assisting a large Lily Bulb company (Bakker Bulbs) for the last 16 seasons. Lilyfields has become the brand
over the last 10 years or so with an annual Catalogue sent out to its customers, as well as a garden and
small nursery that has been developed over the years.
This Year we are opening the Lilyfields up to Visitors in Jan/Feb 2021 to view once again lilies flowering
in the fields. Open weekends Saturday – Sunday from the15th of Jan to the 21st Feb. 2021 (weekends).
We again feature tried and true lilies, along with tulips, paeony roots and a few garden treasures. Thank
you all for your support and patience through 2020.
We always try to meet our dispatch deadlines for mail orders the 2nd week in May, and first customers to
order are always the first sent out. Our website www.lilyfields.co.nz features our stock plus more order
forms and more growing tips and FAQ.

Did You Know? Tulip bulbs get their
energy for next season when they have finished
flowering and starting to die down, so that’s a great
time to sprinkle over fertiliser. Tulip bulbs like the
cold, so in warmer areas you will get better flowers
by lifting them after they have died down, storing in
an onion bag, and putting them in the fridge for 6
weeks prior to re-planting in Autumn.

Did You Know? Paeonies give great colour and are true show stoppers. Each plant sends out multiple stems of blooms which
also make fantastic cut flowers. Cut them at bud
stage and they will open in the vase. Paeonies don’t
like competition around their roots, so are best planted
away from large trees and shrubs. Do not bury roots
too deep. Spring/Summer flowering.
