President’s

Message from

Doreen Morash

Hello everyone! I’m writing this message in the middle of our June heat wave here in the Okanagan. No com-plaints from me about the heat though. I love it, but I’ve changed my sleeping habits, so I can wake up earlier and enjoy the freshness and coolness of my garden in the early mornings. Escaping into the water, just 4 short blocks away is wonderful during the day, and enjoying the coolness of our beautiful lake works for me. Whatever works for you, get out there and enjoy this amazing place that we live in. Don’t forget about attending and participating in our Flower Show at Guisachan Gardens this month as well as visiting some of our Open Gardens. Many thanks for all of the volunteers who have worked hard to put these ac-tivities on for our pleasure this summer. Another very enjoyable activity that I always look forward to is our an-nual Potluck Picnic on July 8th. This year, a guitarist will be playing Spanish background music while we partake in our delicious potluck. Haven’t you noticed how scrumptious our potlucks are…….must be that intimacy we have with nature or especially all those tasty plants that we grow in our gardens! Ah…..gardeners and food. Don’t forget to bring your wine to enjoy with your meal and think of decorating a hat for our competi-tion. Remember that a free raffle ticket will be given to each person entering our “fun” hat contest this year. Be creative with this competition, as the only prerequisite is that the hat should reflect some aspect of your gar-den. Glenda Uthe is once again putting together our fantastic raffle basket and if you have anything to donate for this raffle, please contact her. Let’s get out there and have lots of fun! Also, this is an election year for our garden club as many of the executive have completed their 2 year terms and are leaving their positions. To have a viable club, with many different activities and ideas, we need members to step up and do the leadership jobs. If this is something that you might enjoy, please let one of the present execu-tive know that you are interested. Most of the core positions on the Executive will be open. Our next business meeting will be in September, so I’ll end this message wishing you all a fabulous summer with oodles of enjoyable and memorable activities and moments. As that song says, “See yoooooooooou in September……”. Also, something for you to ponder........ “Flowers are words which even a babe may understand.” Arthur Cleveland Coxe

Vesey’s Bulb

Sale.

This bulb sale is a fundraiser for the Kelowna Garden Club. With members’ enthusiasm and cooperation, this is an excellent opportunity for our club and its members: a guaranteed product at great prices from a renowned company. HOW IT WORKS: Members take home a catalogue (digital version attached to this mailing), an order form and a payment envelope. Member fills in their name and contact information on these. (If you didn’t get one at meeting in May more forms and envelopes are available if needed. See contact below or get one at Flower Show) You then ask your friends, relatives, neighbours if they wish to purchase. You fill in the re-quired information and collect a cheque payable to KELOWNA GARDEN CLUB, which you keep in your payment envelope. Don’t forget to include your own order! Return these to ROSEMARY BOTNER on or before the deadline of SEPTEMBER 15, preferably at the September meeting on Wednesday September 2nd. When the order is delivered, you will be contacted to collect your group order (hopefully at a club meeting), which you will then distribute to your purchasers. WIN WIN WIN: Veseys sells, KGC shares profit Members get great product at great prices. Chairperson for this campaign:

Flower Umbrellas

or

Protecting Flowers from Rain (and Deer) prior to a Flower Show

Since the Guisachan Flower Show is fast approaching, I thought I’d remind our Garden Club members about the Tip of

the Month that I called “Flower Umbrellas”

For this tip you need a used plastic milk jug with the top in place (4 liter is best), scissors or Exacto knife and a garden

stake. Taking the clean milk jug, flip it upside down and cut the bottom off. Slide the garden stake through the cut bot-

tom, wedging it into the handle portion of the jug and voila….you have a plastic flower umbrella. Slip the milk con-

tainer, cut side first, gently over the flower and stake it so the “umbrella” sits just above the flower, not resting on it. Re-

move it during the day (unless raining) so that you don’t scorch your flowers.

This would be used to protect your prize flower from rain damage in the days prior to the Flower Show. I think it might

discourage deer from eating your prize rose as well.

Good luck with all your flower show submissions.

Library Corner

Librarian, Marianna Boda

It has been my privlege to make decisions on chooing new books for those inerested in expanding their knowledge and interest in how plants LIVE, DEFEND THEMSELVES, and- as Ellen Pedersen explained at the last meeting- PROPAGATE - themselves. The world of plants is most important to life itself. Without them none of us HUMANS, BIRDS, BUGS, or any living things would be alive on this globe to breathe the air they clean for us all . I am grateful to all the trees and plants covering LANDS and SEAS. I hope you all, have the curiosity to read more about our favorite subject matter. Have you read a book recently which the readership in our club would enjoy reading? Give me the title and author's name, I will try and get it for our library. Thank you all and see you in September Marianna.

Hospice House needs help! Here is a note received by Judy Runzer

We are looking for a leadership volunteer to help give guidance to our Hospice Gardeners, as Judy Bell is trying to step back a bit more. We currently have one gal learning the ropes from Judy, but she would like one other person to share that role, so if you have any one in mind that might be interested, we’d love to talk with them.

Tip of the Month June by Sue Bannerman

Still having problems with the spacing your seeds or seedlings need when you plant them? June’s tip of the month is another suggestion to help with this issue. The handle of your rake or shovel can help you with spacing. Here’s how:

Take a felt marker, your rake or shovel handle and a tape measure. Measure off 1inch (1”) intervals along the length of the handle of your rake or shovel and put a mark at each interval. When it’s time to plant, lay the rake or shovel on the dirt where you are planting and count off the inches (as indicated on the seed package or seedling tag) to ensure the correct placement of plants. Plant at the interval indicated.

Sue Bannerman and Marianna Boda
