You can easily share any type of content, such as comments, messages, opinions, ideas or pictures, that can get to a larger amount of people. This can be used to reach out to many users all around the world, spreading positive messages that could be helpful.

For example in politics social networks are very important means to promote election

campaigns, because they allow candidates to propose their ideas

all over the country.

• With the evolution of technology, the society has been able to come a long way.

• This has also allowed the society to be more inclusive for people with disabilities.

• Social networks have greatly influenced the disabled community in academic, social, entertainment and business approaches.

• Key accessibility features of phones, computers and social media have allowed people with disabilities to stay connected and informed.

• An example is a site and app called “PACIFICA”.

Page 11: Week 19-26 Marchcopernico.edu.it/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/... · •Week 19-26 March –Introduction, Influence of social media and slides. •Week 26 March/ 02 April –Positive

• Each point on the scale can be associated with programmed descriptive words, or new descriptors that the user can create.

• Users may also add a written journal entry of events associated with the current mood rating.

• After entering a mood rating, the user can choose to address mood issues with one of five activities: Meditations, Goals, Thoughts, Health or Relax.

CYBERBULLYING

It’s a kind of bullying using electronic means. It has many forms which include Cyberstalking and Trolling. With the social users amount increasing the act of cyberbullying has been spreading widely, especially through teenagers.

Page 20: Week 19-26 Marchcopernico.edu.it/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/... · •Week 19-26 March –Introduction, Influence of social media and slides. •Week 26 March/ 02 April –Positive

• Cyberbullying can occur through SMS, Text, and apps, or online in social media, forums, or gaming where people can view, participate in, or share content.

• It includes sending, posting, or sharing negative, harmful, false, or mean content about someone else.

• It can include sharing personal or private information about someone else causing embarrassment or humiliation.

• Some cyberbullying crosses the line into unlawful or criminal behavior.

• The most common places where it occurs on Social Media are: Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter.

Page 21: Week 19-26 Marchcopernico.edu.it/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/... · •Week 19-26 March –Introduction, Influence of social media and slides. •Week 26 March/ 02 April –Positive

Cyberbullying has unique concerns in that it can be:

• Persistent – Digital devices offer an ability to immediately and continuously communicate 24 hours a day, so it can be difficult for children experiencing cyberbullying to find relief.

• Permanent – Most information communicated electronically is permanent and public, if not reported and removed. A negative online reputation, including for those who bully, can impact college admissions, employment, and other areas of life.

• Hard to Notice – Because teachers and parents may not overhear or see cyberbullying taking place, it is harder to recognize.

Page 22: Week 19-26 Marchcopernico.edu.it/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/... · •Week 19-26 March –Introduction, Influence of social media and slides. •Week 26 March/ 02 April –Positive

• The 2014–2015 School Crime Supplement indicates that, nationwide, about 21% of students ages 12-18 experienced bullying.

• The 2015 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance also indicates that an estimated 16% of high school students were bullied electronically in the 12 months prior to the survey.

• It happens when people post personal information, forgetting that once you upload something, it will be up forever.

• Everyone can see what you post on the net, so you have to be careful, because you won’t ever be able to delete it permanently.

FAKE NEWS

• Fake news are another kind of oversharing, consisting of deliberate misinformation spread by traditional print or online social media.

• There are seven types of fake news: satire or parody, false connection, misleading content, false context, imposter content, manipulated content, fabricated content.

• Social media are proven to be able to cause a release of dopamine.

• The act of liking pictures and sharing your own provokes a fake sense of accomplishment, which leads to addiction.

Page 27: Week 19-26 Marchcopernico.edu.it/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/... · •Week 19-26 March –Introduction, Influence of social media and slides. •Week 26 March/ 02 April –Positive

• As we said before, social media are huge platforms where you can spread any kind of message.

• These can diffuse as fast as they can be misinterpreted. Sometimes bad interpretation of a comment can trigger an unstopping process of self-esteem lowering.

• It happens mainly to teenagers, who are willing to change themselves just to fit in and are massively influenced by social networks.

Page 28: Week 19-26 Marchcopernico.edu.it/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/... · •Week 19-26 March –Introduction, Influence of social media and slides. •Week 26 March/ 02 April –Positive

• In 2014, a research team from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine analyzed 1,765 American adults aged 19 and 32 years old.

• They asked the participants to answer a series of questionnaires to describe their social media usage and also to determine their risk of developing eating disordered symptoms.

• Their findings revealed that the subjects who spent the most time engaged with social media each day had 2.2 times the risk of developing eating disorders. Additionally, those who most frequently checked their social media feeds weekly carried 2.6 times the risk.

Page 29: Week 19-26 Marchcopernico.edu.it/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/... · •Week 19-26 March –Introduction, Influence of social media and slides. •Week 26 March/ 02 April –Positive

• Social media can also be home for toxic communities that may advocate unhealthy eating disordered eating behavior.

• Pro-anorexia (“pro-ana”) and pro-bulimia websites and online forums are publicly available; they are interactive and promote starvation. While social media outlets, or even pro-ana sites and content do not directly cause eating disorders, they may normalize disordered eating behaviors and discourage recovery.

REDUCTION OF SOCIALIZING SKILLS

• Spending too much time on social networks, people tend to limit their friendships to virtual ones.

• Digital conversation is overtaking physical interaction, and this lack of contact is leading to a progressive impoverishment of socializing skills.

PERSONAL COMMENT

We both are used to being on social media on a daily basis, especially because we have a

big community of online friends that are unreachable if not through social networks.

We also run a few activities that enable us to engage with an amount of people, and to amass followers with whom we can share content that we like. As most people our

age, our lives are built and focused on social media usage, which has become almost

needed. We are fully aware though that social media’s platform can be extremely

dangerous, so we are always using them with huge carefulness.

Page 34: Week 19-26 Marchcopernico.edu.it/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/... · •Week 19-26 March –Introduction, Influence of social media and slides. •Week 26 March/ 02 April –Positive

To reduce the many risks of spending so much time on social networks, we suggest to users:

1. keeping in mind that there’s a real world outside the digital one, and you won’t be able to escape it just by misleading yourself with a virtual reality;

2. not taking too seriously all the comments that you might get on social networks, and not to share mean comments about other people;

3. having a good balance between digital and real life activities.
