“Life of St. Paul” Week 2: “Who Knows the Mind of the Lord”

August 23, 2020

This is our second week in our message series, “Life of St. Paul.” In this short series, we are focusing on St. Paul’s Letter to the Romans which we hear from in our second reading. We noted last week, that St. Paul had not yet been to Rome, but there were already a Christian community there. St. Paul’s letter is one of introduction and an invitation for the Roman Christians to join him in his ministry when he arrives.

We also noted last weekend, that there was a pastoral reason for St. Paul’s visit. There was a division and rivalry among the Christians in Rome, some of whom were of Jewish background while others were of Gentile background. Each group was trying to say why they thought they were God’s favorite. St. Paul reminds the Christians in Rome that all of us have been disobedient to God, and God has shown His mercy on all of us. Neither group is better than the other.

Today’s second reading picks up right where we left off last week. St. Paul has burst into a song of praise. Paul marvels at the genius and generosity of God that shines through the “mystery” revealed and the “mercy” promised to all. In this hymn of praise, St. Paul asks two questions, “For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor? Or who has given him anything that he may be repaid?” (Rom 11:34–35). Of course the answer to both questions is “no one.” God is transcendent in knowledge over all his creatures, and he is in debt to none of them. Everything the human person knows and possesses has been freely and bountifully given from above.

Yet if we are really honest with ourselves, all of us have at times acted as if we knew the mind of God. It might have been in an overt manner of “I know that this is what God wants us to do,” or it might have been in a despairing, “What was God thinking?” In either case, it is pride manifesting itself in our lives.

God has given us intelligence, and He most certainly wants us to use our minds to the best of our ability, but there will always be a limit to what we can understand, there will always be a mystery about God. When we reach that limit, all we can do is to accept and adore the magnificence of God.

This can be challenging at times. We want to be in control of our lives. When pride makes think we know the mind of God we need to pray for humility. The humility that recognizes God’s great love for us, so that we can surrender ourselves into His hands.

What do we want you to know: God’s designs are infinitely beyond our understanding, yet all of them are firmly rooted in God’s love for us. We should always approach God’s designs in the spirit of humility.

What do we want you to do: Identify something happening in your life right now that doesn’t seem to make any sense, acknowledge God’s love for you, and then pray as Jesus did, “into your hands I commend my spirit.”

BEST WAYS PARENTS CAN TEACH THE FAITH

Parents have more challenges today than any other time in history when it comes to forming their kids in the Catholic faith. They are being pulled in many directions. Most families have two working parents. Some parents work two or more jobs. The cost of living has increased far beyond salary raises. The age of technology constantly pulls kids away from genuine relationships. And, in order to have a relationship with Christ, it usually requires being in wholesome, loving relationships on earth. This begins in the family. Not only technology, but extra-curricular activities pull kids away from family time and nurturing loving relationships. So, what can parents do to lead kids to an intimate relationship with God?

The best way is for the parent to be super passionate about the Catholic faith. This is something that can be learned. At the end of the day, it is very clear that parents who love God and are passionate about that will convey great enthusiasm and energy to their kids, which is contagious. Parents do not need to be versed in theology or have all the answers to questions. Answers to questions can always be found. You can ask a priest or look up the answer in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (which you can find online). Google “Catholic Answers” and you will find many answers to your questions. “Faith facts” from Catholics united for the Faith (CUF) also is a great resource. Kids learn primarily, however, from watching and imitating those who most influence them (parents primarily).

How do parents develop a deep, intimate relationship with God? Well, one way is to take 5 minutes per day of absolute silence. And just listen to Jesus speak to your heart. Be somewhere that allows for complete silence – no phone, outside noise or distractions. Then, eliminate the internal noise. Calm your mind, memories and imaginations. Try hard to eliminate daydreaming for just 5 minutes. Let go of any addictions or worldly attachments that you have. And, focus on God. Maybe think about Jesus’ life on earth or His Passion and Crucifixion. You could stare at a religious picture. But, try to listen to Christ speaking to your heart. This takes time and practice but this is a great way to develop your own relationship with God.

Prayer time is essential for developing a relationship. By seeing your passion about silent prayer, kids will learn what is necessary for them to have a relationship with God. Also, you can pray together as a family. The family rosary or divine mercy chaplet, night prayer and grace before and after meals are all good ways to start. Fr. Peyton, who started the family rosary crusade, said “the family that prays together stays together.”

Finally, strengthen and nurture your family. Family relationships are indispensable to kids remaining in the faith. Plan family time each week. Try to eat together at least for one meal per day. Talk to kids. Even teens like to be loved (and yes, they may not engage in conversation, but they still feel secure when parents reach out to them in love).

Although there are certainly challenges today, taking some simple steps will enable parents to pass on the faith to their kids. Spending five minutes/day in silent prayer (silence is where we find God), praying together as a family and planning family time each day and each week will help parents fulfill the role God gave us as primary educators of our children in the faith.

For centuries Catholics have turned to the Blessed Virgin Mary, asking for her intercession in times of need by praying the Rosary. This great prayer, whose origins date before the 12th century, uses a meditative repetition of prayers that invoke the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary as she leads us to consider the mysteries in the life of her Divine Son, Jesus. History has shown this to be a powerful, effective and calming prayer that has truly changed hearts and lives over the centuries of its use.

Venerable Archbishop Fulton Sheen once said of the Rosary that it is “the book of the blind, where

souls see and there enact the greatest drama of love the world has ever known; it is the book of the simple, which initiates them into mysteries and knowledge more satisfying than the education of other men; it is the book of the aged, whose eyes close upon the shadow of this world, and open on the substance of the next. The power of the Rosary is beyond description.”

As Bishop of the Diocese of Trenton, I invite all Catholics in the Diocese of Trenton to consider

making this powerful devotion part of your daily life of prayer. Please join with me in praying Our Lady’s Rosary every day between now and October 7, the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, for the many intentions and needs of our nation today, especially for a true respect for life in all its stages from conception to natural death; for the strengthening of marriage and family life; for an end to the COVID 19 pandemic and for all those impacted by it; for a lasting resolution to the racial tensions and injustices that have too long afflicted our country; for an end to the violence and death in our cities, especially among the young; for the victims of sexual abuse and human trafficking; for the poor, the unemployed and those who face economic hardship and for so many of the other intentions and needs that we face in our country and world.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Most Reverend David M. O’Connell, C.M. Bishop of Trenton

Life of St. Paul Series

Summary We are going from one of the most important people in the Old Testament, Moses, to one of the most important people in the New Testament, St. Paul. In fact, St. Paul wrote most of the New Testament. Originally this message series was 6 weeks long, and it looked at the different aspects of St. Paul’s life. However, this year we only have three weeks to look at St. Paul before our Fall Kickoff message series, “Cornerstones,” begins. That being the case, and since our second reading for the next three weeks comes from St. Paul’s Letter to the Romans, we are going to focus on just chapter 11 (and a smidgen of chapter 12) of this most important letter. St. Paul, the Apostle to the Gentiles, had not yet made it to Rome in any of his missionary trips, so the Letter to the Romans is basically an introduction, and an invitation for the Romans to enter into a partnership with him in proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ. The whole letter is all about the drama between sin and salvation. However, the letter also addresses a pastoral concern that has arisen – a division between Jewish Christians and Gentile Christians. Apparently some of the Jewish Christians have been emphasizing that they were from the Chosen People, and were superior to the Gentile Christians. On the other hand, some of the Gentile Christians, seeing that most of the Jewish people had rejected Christ, were arguing that God had rejected the Jews as His Chosen People, and that now the Gentiles were the New Chosen People. St. Paul teaches that Christ came to save everyone, and while our circumstances may vary, we are to use the graces that God has given us to bring everyone around us to Christ. Week 2 (August 23): “Who Knows the Mind of God?” In this weekend’s second reading, St. Paul asks the question, “For who has known the mind of the Lord?” Of course we know the answer is “no one,” but if we are honest with ourselves, haven’t we all known someone who acts as if they know the mind of the Lord? And as we are being honest, haven’t we sometimes acted as if we knew the mind of the Lord? Such an attitude comes from that old nemesis, Pride. Even when the Lord’s plan seems to make no sense to us, and we cry out, “What is God thinking?” it is again pride on our part, thinking we could do it better. It is in these moments that we must pray for the gift of humility. Trusting in God’s infinite love for us, we surrender into His hands. What do we want you to know: God’s designs are infinitely beyond our understanding, yet all of them are firmly rooted in God’s love for us. We should always approach God’s designs in the spirit of humility. What do we want you to do: Identify something happening in your life right now that doesn’t seem to make any sense, acknowledge God’s love for you, and then pray as Jesus did, “into your hands I commend my spirit.” RESURRECTION PARISH RELIGIOUS EDUCATION 2020-21 The 2020-2021 Registration form for Religious Education (Grades K through 8) is now available on our parish website at https://tinyurl.com/ya86ahr2. WHAT’S YOUR GO-TO SUMMER SANDWICH? With all the great Jersey summer produce…what’s your go-to summer sandwich? Is it the ever popular Jersey tomato sandwich, with a fresh tomato from a local farmer’s market? There’s nothing better! Personally, my tomato sandwich has to be on white bread, thinly sliced tomato, mayo, salt and pepper; and that seals the deal. That’s my version, but I know others have their own favorites, and some like butter and mayo, or rye bread and tomatoes sliced real thick. For some, it’s not tomato but cucumber that sandwiches are lunch time favorites. Options include using mayo, butter or cream cheese to create this crunchy summer classic. While we all know burgers are always a summer go-to for the grill, there are even variations to this classic. Do you like a plain burger thrown on the grill, or do you get fancy and stuff it with spices, onions or cheese? A Stewart’s scramburger is yet another version, with ground beef, onions and ketchup. It’s one of my family’s favorites to make at home, and it’s a fast and easy dinner without heating up the kitchen too much. If you’re not able to eat gluten or maybe just sticking to low carbs, you're not out of luck. Another summer treat is a Jersey tomato cut into quarters and stuffed with homemade chicken salad. That’s for really hot days when you are staying away from the stove or grill. A stuffed tomato goes well with an ear of Jersey corn. Delish! We all have our own personal favorites, our special lunch time concoctions, so please tell me... what’s your go-to Summer Sandwich?! Share your family’s favorite; email me at [email protected] or drop it off in an envelope to the office mailbox and I will publish it in next week’s bulletin. Please give your name and phone #, in case I have a question. In the meantime here’s a delicious summer recipe to try, that can be made with Jersey fresh produce! JERSEY ZUCCHINI TART Ingredients: 1 store bought round pie dough 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 1/3 cup mayo 1 tsp chopped fresh thyme 2 large fresh zucchini, sliced into thin rounds Salt and pepper to taste Extra virgin olive oil Directions: Place a baking sheet in the oven and preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Lay the pie dough onto a long piece of parchment paper. Raise the edges slightly and crimp. In a bowl stir together the mayo and mustard, then spread this mixture on the pie crust. Place zucchini and thyme in a bowl, sprinkle with salt, pepper, and drizzle with olive oil. Toss the zucchini to coat all the slices. Place the slices of zucchini over the mayo mustard mixture, in a circle pattern. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and slide the parchment paper onto it. Bake until the crust is golden brown and the zucchini is tender. Approximately 20 – 30 minutes. Makes 4 servings. Enjoy this with a glass of Jersey wine or some homemade ice tea!

FALL IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER!

RESURRECTION PARISH

WOULD LIKE TO INTRODUCE OUR

FALL MEGA 50/50 Since Covid 19 has us still social distancing, we feel that we really can’t run a safe Fall Festival and Polish Kitchen. We would never want to put our parishioners or our volunteers at risk. So for the moment we are just going to have a FALL MEGA 50/50. This 50/50 will be split between 3 winners. The drawing will be held on November 1, on All Saints Day.

Soon we will be mailing you a letter, two books of 50/50 chances ($20) and a census card. Please return your chances and the census card in a plain envelope, marked FALL MEGA 50/50. Return them the same way you would your regular collection envelopes, either mail, secure mailbox at office or the collection basket at church. MEGA 50-50 – By having the drawing on November 1, we hope the jackpot climbs to a good amount that the winners will see a nice amount for Christmas shopping; some household projects or just to catch up on bills. We will keep the Jackpot amount listed in the bulletin each week. Good luck to all! CENSUS CARD – At the beginning of the pandemic we realized that we didn’t have a way to reach our parishioners with news and updates from Resurrection Parish. So a Facebook page was created and all our important information was listed on the first page of our website resurrection2.org. We need a better way to reach you in the case of an emergency or severe weather. With an email address we can send out an email blast that would reach all our parishioners. If you don’t have an email address, that’s okay. Give us the email address of a family member or a friend (with their permission) that would alert you to an emergency email from your parish. The census card will also be used for any updates you have with your address or phone numbers. Please send your card back in an envelope to protect your privacy and information. All you census information is kept confidence at the parish office. Any questions please call Trish at 856-461-6555. SPREAD THE NEWS…Please spread the word about our FALL MEGA 50/50! Tell your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers, chances are available at the parish office during office hours. If you would like to take some chance to work with you, stop by and pick some up.
