Kirraweee Public School 146-156 Bath Rd, Kirrawee NSW, 2232 Ph (02) 95214514 Principal’s Message Welcome back to Term 2. I trust you had a good break with Easter and Anzac Day falling close to one another. Welcome to our new families you will find Kirrawee Public School to be a welcoming school. The introduction of our skoolbag application has without doubt generated the most positive feedback we’ve experienced in some time ( see download instructions at the end of the newsletter) Thank you also to ALL parents for ongoing support and a special mention to the wonderful parent and community volunteers who give up their valuable time, to assist our students in so many and varied ways. STRANGER DANGER We have recently revised “Stranger Danger” with our students. It would be advisable for all parents or caregivers to revise safe strategies with their child/ren, to reinforce our school message. The message: *reiterate safe and predetermined travel routes to and from school *include not approaching unknown persons in cars or on the street, no matter what their message might claim (e.g. Your mother asked me to take you home or can you show me the way to the shops, etc) ANZAC SERVICE Thank You to our school captains who led the school in our annual ANZAC Memorial Service. This was held on the last day of school, on a bright sunny, blue sky day. Special thanks to Mrs Welch for guiding our school leaders through the appropriate protocols of this special event in our lives. Thank you to all the parents, grandparents and family members who attended the service. SCHOOL SATISFACTION SURVEY A copy of the 2013 School Satisfaction survey results will be available from the front office as of tomorrow. SCHOOL UNIFORM I strongly encourage everyone to please adhere to the school uniform policy (shoes, pants, tops, etc). We need to instill a sense of Pride and Ownership into our students and maintain a high standard across the whole school. KINDERGARTEN

Kindergarten had a very exciting end of term. First of all they had an excursion to the Thomas Holt Nursing Home at Sutherland. There they sang a collection of Easter songs to the residents and gave gifts of Easter eggs and Easter cards. They brought a smile to the faces of these residents as they sang their songs with Kindergarten enthusiasm. That was followed by the Easter Hat Parade later in the week. All families had gone to a great deal of trouble to make fantastic Easter hats that were worn with great pride on the day. After the holidays Kindergarten are ready for another busy term with an excursion to Symbio at Helensburgh being planned.

NURSING HOME VISITS

In the last week of term Kindergarten, Year 1, Year 2 and the Senior Choir visited three local nursing homes. They were The Palms at Kirrawee, Big Sister at Miranda and Thomas Holt at Sutherland. The children went to share some easter cheer with the elderly residents. The children sang a number of Easter songs and gave Easter eggs and Easter cards to the residents. The Kirrawee students did a wonderful job of entertaining the elderly and providing a community service to our local nursing homes. Well done Kirrawee.

STAGE 1

Stage 1 has returned to school very settled and ready for work. Most students have shown great improvements in their reading since last term – well done everyone! 1B welcomes a new student, Ethan who has fitted in very well in his new class and school. Welcome Ethan! Next Thursday, 15th May will be visiting The Royal Botanical Gardens and Hyde Park, leaving at 8.50 am. The unit of study undertaken by the students at the Gardens will be Get Growing to reinforce the content being studied in our COGs unit this term, Growing and Changing. Don’t forget to return permission notes and $5 for students who have paid for their learning packs. Notes are due this Friday. This week students will begin potting up their seeds and/ or bulbs to observe how they grow over the term and into next term. Here are some photos of 2B learning about the volume of various objects in Maths groups last term. Mrs Karen Beckman (Year 2 teacher)

STAGE 2

Stage Two have quickly settled into our term two program and will be studying topics which include ‘sustainability’, ‘growth and change’ in relation to body systems and functions in the area of Science. Students in stage two are all expected to complete a reading log each day as part of their home learning activities which should be signed off by a parent or guardian. We want to encourage and foster a love of reading and emphasise the importance of reading on a daily basis. Books are available in both classrooms to borrow for this purpose. Our Got Game program continues and the focus for the term is soccer which the children find lots of fun! Many of our stage two students have been selected in our KPS PSSA sporting teams which are soccer and netball for winter sport. The school sport program continues as usual. 3/4H welcomes back our student teacher Miss Lykourentzos who will be working with us from weeks 3-7. Our year three students will also be involved in NAPLAN exams during Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of week 3. Mr Morgan and myself look forward to meeting with our stage two parents later in the term to discuss your child’s progress and achievements. Michelle Hearnden 3/4H teacher

STAGE 3 Term 2 is already upon us and Years 5 and 6 have settled in quickly and have been busy with their new units of work and also new PSSA teams. The children have been enjoying the units if work that have an emphasis on Energy and Sustainability. The Mother’s Day stall will be held in Week 2 Thursday. Year 5 have been gearing up for Naplan starting Tuesday Week 3. Due to Naplan Year 5 will resume homework Week 4. As we look further into Term 2, during Week 4 we have the Zone Cross Country and also ‘Walk safely to school’ which I hope there are lots of students and parents involved.

BATHURST GOLDFIELDS STAGE 3 Stage 3 had a very enjoyable day on Thursday 3rd April. We had an early start and a late finish but for the children it consolidated so many of the things that we had been learning about in class. The children saw firsthand the equipment that was used on the goldfields and realised what a hard life it was for so many people. They experienced the changes that occurred when the rail lines came through and steam power was introduced. They also went back in time themselves, cooking over an open fire, making mud bricks, seeing how clothes use to be washed and enjoyed some old fashion playing; with a rope for tug-o-war, horse shoes and trying to improve their skill when bowling towards a target. But the big thing was panning for GOLD. The excitement when they found specks of gold. STAGE 3 teachers and students

THE EASTER HAT AND MASK PARADE

The children had a fantastic time at the parade and although the weather was not the best it didn’t deter the children from the fun and excitement of the event. They loved parading in front of the audience and the K-2 children enjoyed their singing. Year 6 would like to again take this opportunity to thank everyone who donated goodies for our Easter raffle. It proved to be a huge success. Also to all who cooked or bought cakes or sweets for our stall a big thank you. As you are aware, this was one of the major fundraisers for year 6 and we are so proud to announce, that thanks to everyone who took part, we raised an astounding $1132.70. Again Thank You to the KPS community, you always support our endeavours. Year 6 Students

Chaplain’s Corner

Welcome back to Term Two – I do hope your holiday was a great time to relax and enjoy your children’s company without rushing. I am looking forward to a busy term with Seasons for Growth and Fun Friends programs beginning. The first Seasons for Growth will be for 6-8 years. This program will begin next week either Wednesday or Thursday – TBA. Fun Friends for Kindergarten will also begin next week on Wednesday. I will notify you when the other groups are beginning. Last term we looked at the introduction to the ‘The 5 Love Languages for Children’. I suggest you read over the last (week 10) Newsletter of Chaplain’s Corner to refresh your memory of this introduction. This week we will look at the first Love Language which is touch. Hugs, kisses, fun tossing games with littlies, spinning round and round and story reading to your child cuddled on your lap are some ways children whose love language is touch will enjoy the most. Of course most children respond happily to these but your touch child will crave this response from you. Physical touch is the easiest love language to use unconditionally because there is so much opportunity to transfer love to your child’s heart through touch. It is certainly not limited to hugs and kisses it includes any type of positive touch – a gentle squeeze, a gentle touch on their back, arms or shoulder, a supportive pat in the head are all positive ways of reaching out in love to your children. If either parent is uncomfortable with physical touch it is important to make changes and begin to show love using touch simply by a soft touch on your child’s arm, shoulder, back or head. Eventually you will feel your child response to you and this will lead to loving hugs and kisses without you feeling awkward or uncomfortable just enjoyable. Often paternal affection is not recognized as being very important but children whose love language is touch especially girls could have a distortion in their relationship with all males later on. Physical touch is probably loves strongest voice, it shouts ‘I love you!’ Babies who are held, caressed and kissed develop a healthier emotional life than babies who are left for long periods without loving touch and contact. Touch is not a modern notion parents worked in fields with baby cradled in a pouch around their bodies. In the first century parents brought their children to Jesus to have him touch them. Jesus rebuked his disciples when they said he was too busy with ‘important’ matters to spend time with children. Jesus took them in his arms and hugged them. Children whose love language is touch will need to have their love tank filled constantly with your loving touch. Conversely, if you use physical touch as an expression of anger you will hurt these children very deeply. A face slap is very detrimental to any child but to a child whose love language is touch it will be devastating. For many children, physical touch speaks louder than words, gifts, quality time or acts of service. Without touch their love tank will never be overflowing. These children say ‘ I know my mum loves me because she hugs me’ or ‘ When I leave the house or come home my dad or mum hug me – I know I am loved’ or ‘ I still look forward to hugs and kisses from my parents even though I am older now’. If you are not a natural toucher practice on yourself or on your partner, you may be denying an important expression of love for your child whose love tank needs to be filled by your loving touch. Anyone can learn the language of physical touch, and if it is your child’s primary love language, it is worth your best efforts. Our next language of love to explore is ‘words of affirmation’. You can borrow this book from me in the Friendship Room if you want to read more I have several. With love Ina Cook
