Principal’s News

On Friday of last week our Year 12’s completed their formal lessons at Ardrossan Area School. We celebrated this milestone with a shared lunch in the garden area. This year’s graduates are aiming to complete their South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) in a range of diverse ways. We have those pursuing an ATAR for potential entry to university, those completing a Certificate III within a Traineeship, those pursing a School Based Apprenticeship and those seeking to complete through a focus on community service/studies. We wish all of our graduating Year 12 students the best for the final assessments over the next few weeks. Last week our Year 3 to 6 students attended ‘Zoo Snooze’. Our Year 3 and 4 students spent last Tuesday night at the Adelaide Zoo and our Year 5 and 6 students spent the Wednesday night at the zoo. This was a fantastic opportunity for our students and a number of staff to see the inner workings of the zoo and develop a deeper understandings about the care of animals and the role of zoos. Our Year 11 Outdoor Education students spent 3 days bushwalking around Mambray Creek. They had a wonderful time and were blessed with beautiful weather. Later this term our Year 8s and 9s will have the opportunity to attend a Surf Camp at Corny Point. The learning and experiences gained on camps are wonderful life skills as students learn to care for self and others and how to be effective team members. Thank-you to our staff for their willingness to plan these camp opportunities and supervise students overnight. Our Performing Arts Concert will be held tonight in the Town Hall at 7pm. The Ardrossan Area School Festival Choir, the Junior and Senior Choirs, the combined Yorke Peninsula Concert Band, the Beginner Concert Band and a number of Ensembles and Soloists will all perform on the night. It is a great opportunity for parents and community members to see the strength of our Performing Arts Program. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our dedicated music teachers Mrs Lori Brooks, Mr Nathan Wright and Mrs Debbie Schwartz, our talented music students and their parents/carers for their continued support. I look forward to hearing our wonderful musicians perform. With the warm weather upon us, we have noticed a number of students wearing black shorts and board shorts. Shorts should be plain navy blue, without stripes or logos larger than the AAS logo, or pants sold through the school. It has also be noticed that some students are wearing footwear that is not secure to the foot. We ask that all footwear be secure to the foot and suitable for students to engage in the full range of school activities. The requirements of the uniform as per the school dress code policy are available on the school website (http://www.ardas.sa.edu.au/) or in hard copy, which can be obtained from the Front Office. We thank those students and families who ensure that they are adhere to the school dress code. Sadly this week we learnt of the recent death of a former long –time Ardrossan Area School teacher; Mrs Connie Zirkle. A number of parents and former students may recall being taught by Mrs Zirkle in her role as an English/History teacher and a Coordinator. Each year the Melanie Zirkle Award for Senior School Citizenship is awarded to a senior school student. This award was set up in 1983 by Mrs Zirkle in honour of her daughter who was tragically killed while in Africa. The school will continue this tradition out of deep respect to both Mrs Connie Zirkle and her daughter Melanie. Our collective condolences to Mrs Zirkle’s family and friends at this sad time.

Kind regards, Karen Bond

Zoo Snooze School camp at the zoo was fun and it was a great experience. Everyone loved the playground especially the trampolines and the swing. We loved the night walk and patting the lizard. We enjoyed looking at all the animals especially the meerkats. Bella and Kaylah For our camp we went to the Adelaide Zoo. We saw the meerkats and we got to see the baby meerkats. We also got to see a white meerkat which had a skin condition. We also went to the petting zoo to pat goats and deers. Mrs P put her handbag down to take a photo and a goat came along and took a piece of paper out and ate it. Ashlee Mikayla and Sienna My favourite bit was when people were feeding the lions. Dylan

AAS News

From the Deputy……. I had the pleasure of attending the Year 3/4 Zoo Snooze last

Tuesday. It was a fun camp, with all of the students learning a

lot about the zoo and the animals. I was impressed with the way

the students represented AAS. The Year 5/6 students also had a

great Zoo Snooze Wednesday night. Thank you to Deony Sims,

Andrew Mills, Patrick Clark, Leonie Peterson, Petrina Winen and

Dianna Honner for their organisation and supervision of the Zoo

Snoozes and to Kym Wayne for driving the bus.

AAS have successfully applied for passes to the 2018 Credit

Union Christmas Pageant Community Site. The pageant will be

held on Saturday 10th

November. If you would like to access

these passes please speak to our Front Office Staff. A maximum

of 4 passes per family are available (children aged 3 years and

under do not require a pass). The pass enables access to the

Community Site in Wakefield Street.

I look forward to seeing family and community members at our

AAS Performing Arts Concert tonight (Wednesday 31st

October)

at the Ardrossan Town Hall, commencing at 7pm.

Kind regards Margaret

Tuesday, week 2, the Year 10s attended the RAP presentation at Minlaton. They listened to a survivor of a road crash who now has a brain injury. Below are some reflections from our students. “It was a big eye opener on how important it is to be safe on our roads and the consequences of taking risks.’ ‘It was really interesting and thought provoking. It sends a strong message about how to be safe on roads. It was really well presented and engaging to watch. I learnt a lot from this program.’ ‘The Program was great! I learnt not only about road safety but a lot about myself and what I can do as a road user to make sure I’m being safe.’ ‘It was a good program. I learnt many things and believe many other people did too. I have learnt to tell drivers if they are doing something wrong and if I don’t feel safe. I believe this will make me a safer driver when I get my licence.’
