What is the difference between a fiction text and a nonfiction text?

Think back to when we wrote our Day of the Dead nonfiction text.

What are the main features of a nonfiction text?

This week you will be preparing to write a fact file about the mountains in the UK.

What is a fact file?

A fact file is a collection of the most important information on a particular subject or thing. It is shorter than a nonfiction book and generally only takes up a page or two.

Tuesday 23rd June 2020To organise information into subheadings.

What is a subheading?A Subheading is a miniheading given to a paragraph within a main piece of writing. Subheadings are often seen in nonfiction writing and are used to capture the reader's attention to keep them reading down the page, following each subheading to find specific information.

Can you think of an appropriate subheading for each of the paragraphs on the next pages? The first one has been done for you. Make sure you carefully read each paragraph as this will help with your knowledge of Mountains and therefore your work throughout the rest of the week.

A mountain is a part of the landscape with steep slopes that rise over 300m. Some mountains are found in groups called ranges such as the Lake District in England and Snowdonia in Wales. Others are isolated summits. When mountain ranges are found together they make up mountain chains. The Alps in Europe, the Rocky mountains in North America and the Andes in South America are all mountain chains.

What is a mountain?

Mountain weather conditions can change dramatically. In just a few minutes a thunder storm can roll in when the sky was perfectly clear, and in just a few hours the temperatures can drop from extremely hot temperatures to temperatures that are below freezing. The temperature on mountains becomes colder the higher the altitude gets, they tend to have much wetter climates than the surrounding flat land. Mountains have shiny white surfaces beacuse of the ice and snow. It reflects the sun keeping the temperature freezing during the summer.

There are many dangers on a mountain. Avalanches can occur frequently. An avalanche is a huge mass of snow moving at over 300km per hour, they are usually triggered my a shock. The avalanche will destroy everything in its path. Additionally, climbers can get frost bite and hypothermia from the severe cold, both of these illnesses can kill if not treated quickly. Climbers can also suffer from altitude sickness. The higher up a mountain you are, the thinner the air is. This means that a climber will have to take more breaths to get the same amount of oxygen. Climbers can become dizzy, short of breather and tired .

Not only are mountains incredibly beautiful, they also have a variety of uses. • The scenery of mountains makes the area a popular tourist spot. This brings in a lot of money to the area. • Farmers graze their animals on the land surrounding the mountains.• Water authorities make reservoirs and pump the water to towns and cities.• Forestry companies grow coniferous forests and harvest wood on them.• Many people live in mountain areas. It has been estimated that 12% of the world's population live in mountain areas. People as well as other animals and plants have adapted to living in the mountains. The South American Uru tribe have larger hearts and lungs to breather the thin air at high altitudes.

A volcano is a type of mountain that opens downward to a pool of molten rock (magma) below the surface of the Earth. As pressure in the molten rock builds up, it needs to escape somewhere, so it forces its way up through narrow cracks in the earths crust. Once the magma erupts through the Earth's surface, it is called lava. There are around 1,510 active volcanoes in the world, we currently know that 80 or more of these are under the oceans.

Mountains are formed by slow but gigantic movements of the Earth's crust (the outer layer of the Earth). The Earth's crust is made up of 6 huge slabs called plates, which fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. When two plates smash into each other, the land can be pushed upwards, forming a mountain. Many of the greatest mountain ranges of the world have formed because of enormous collisions between continents. There are five basic kinds of mountains:• Fold Mountains• Fault-block Mountains• Dome Mountains• Volcanic Mountains• Plateau Mountains

Mountains can sometimes act as a barrier to passing animals and plants. For example the Rocky Mountains in the US and Canada have two different ecosystems on each side. As well as different ecosysytems on each side of a mountain, you can often find different ecosystems as you climb a mountain. Because of the rapid changes in altitude (height) and temperature along a mountain slope, ecosystems can change quickly. The growth of vegetation (plant life) depends on the rainfall and temperature. As you climb higher up a mountain, it gets colder and the trees eventually thin out and disappear. When it gets too cold for trees to grow, it is called a timberline. The highest part of the mountain supports only sparse plants which can withstand the harsh conditions. Life on mountains for animals can be very difficult. Food is scarce due to the limited vegetation and the climate is very cold. Animal life on mountains vary from continent to continent. The animals in the mountains of North America include big horn sheep, mountain goats, brown bear, black bear, grizzly bear, mountain lions and antelope.

2. Research as much factual information as you can for each subheading. Only write the facts in note form, you will put them into full sentences when you write the fact file tomorrow.
