Week 6 – History – Year 8

WARNING – This lesson is about the atomic bomb. The video clips

and images are what we would have seen in class however, please

bear in mind that I’m not there to warn you as I would in lesson. You

may wish to have your parents/carers have a look at this first.

How did WWII end in Japan?

As you know from last week’s work, Japan attacked Pearl Harbour

which brought the USA in to the war on the side of the British. After

the war ended in Europe (VE day celebration was on 8th May), the

USA needed to end the war with Japan. They took drastic action and

they dropped bombs that caused devastation that had never been

seen to this extent before or since.

Two atomic bombs were dropped on two cities –

B. Watch this clip and answer the following questions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wxWNAM8Cso 1. How were the bombs dropped on the cities?

2. Were people taking any precautions like being in shelters

when the bomb dropped? What evidence did you see?

3. Why do you think the pilots thought the bomb “was a dud?”

4. What happened to the man sitting on the pavement at 3:07minutes on the video?

C. Using the evidence below, why did the USA develop an

atomic bomb?

E. Read about the damage that was done from the dropping of

the bombs. WARNING – This is where you need to be careful

regarding the images and text – best get your parents/carers to

check this section if you are worried.

Do you think the most damage was done at the time the bomb

was dropped or in the long term? Your opinion.

The pictures below show injured people in a makeshift hospital. The injuries and causalities

were so high that hospitals couldn’t cope and many people could not get medical treatment.

The second picture show burnt bodies piled up on the road. They had instantly been turned to

ash from the heat of the bomb.

The third picture shows a lady with damage to her back. After the bombs were dropped there

was radiation left in the sky. Rain started and because of the radiation it was damaging. Many

women ran, sheltering their children underneath them in their arms so they didn’t get hurt but it

meant that they suffered horrific injuries on their backs which these severe burns show.

F. Use the following factors to judge whether the USA were right

or wrong to drop the bombs.

You could print and highlight the boxes with the key of “justified (right)”

or “unjustified (wrong)” or you could make a list on a piece of paper.

G – Were the USA right to drop the atomic bombs?

A suggested writing frame is below or you could answer the

question in your own way.

Remember to include:

• WHAT the bombs were,

• WHY they were dropped,

A. Look at the before and after pictures to see the devastation.

How would you describe it?

Devastating, horrific, flattened, obliterated.

B. Watch this clip and answer the following questions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wxWNAM8Cso 1. How were the bombs dropped on the cities? By a plane called

the Enola Gay.

2. Were people taking any precautions like being in shelters when the bomb dropped? What evidence did you see? No, they were having an ordinary day, e.g. people having breakfast, children at school.

3. Why do you think the pilots thought the bomb “was a dud?” This type of bomb had never been dropped on civilians before and only tested in controlled conditions where no one was hurt.

4. What happened to the man sitting on the pavement at 3:07minutes on the video? He was obliterated by the force of the bomb and was left as a shadow on the pavement.

C. Using the evidence below, why did the USA develop an atomic

bomb?

The Nazis were also trying to develop the atomic bomb so the USA

wanted to do it first as whoever had this type of bomb had the most

amount of power and would win the war.

Page 13: Week 6 History Year 8 This lesson is about the atomic bomb ...€¦ · WARNING – This lesson is about the atomic bomb. The video clips and images are what we would have seen in

It felt impossible for the USA to win the war against Japan as despite

precision bombing that was killing hundreds of thousands of people,

they would not surrender.

The USA also knew that if they were going to win, it wouldn’t be until

the following year and that they’d likely lose over 1 million soldiers as

well as the war being frightfully expensive for them too.

E. Do you think the most damage was done at the time the bomb

was dropped or in the long term?

Long term effects:

• Radioactive rain

• Cancers increased

• Birth defects and learning disabilities

• Infertility of survivors

• Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

F. Use the following factors to judge whether the USA were right

or wrong to drop the bombs.

THIS IS YOUR OWN OPINION – MINE IS BELOW TO ILLUSTRATE FOR YOU.
