Tauranga Primary School Newsletter 30 November 2012 Newsletter TERM 4 / WEEK 7 F r o m t h e P r i n c i p a l ‘s P e n Dear Parents, WOW! Only two more weeks before we reach the end of the 2012 school year. It has been very busy since our last newsletter with all the out of doors activities taking place, deep water safety, beach visits, fishing, quests and our Year 6’s visit to intermediate. We have been so lucky with the weather for these events and so pleased that it has stayed fine for our picnic tonight. Thank you with your support for the recent Paid Union Meeting. It is vital that we know what the plans are for all our students on days like this and those who gave us early notice of intent in having children stay at school assisted with this organisation. Teachers are extremely concerned about the recent political interference in education and are voicing their concerns on behalf of all children in New Zealand. Reports: Next Friday (7 th December) you will receive your child/rens end of year report. Please take time to discuss this with them. Every child has made progress through the year and this is the time to celebrate the successes. We do ask that you note the next steps suggested for improvement in literacy and maths and, where possible, help at home with these. The summer holiday is a time when learning is often forgotten and we do notice what those children who have not read, or kept a diary over the break need quite a lot of revision before the new year’s work can begin. Please ensure that your child/ren have the opportunity to read and/or write during the summer. Your support in working with your child/ren at home certainly makes a difference to children’s attitude to learning and to their success at school. Tauranga has a fantastic library and a great selection of children’s books. Please do make use of it. End of year happenings : Next week is the junior school Christmas Show. This is to be held at the Salvation Army hall across the road from the school (Cameron Road) 11 a.m. on Wed 5 th and Thurs 6 th December. On Thursday 13 th December we have our Leavers assembly (At 9.15am to avoid the heat of the day ). We would love to see as many of our Year 6 parents there as possible. The field will be open for parking (weather permitting) but ask that you park considerately so as not to block other cars in. Do wear cool clothing as it will be hot in the hall. Later on that day the children who will be at TPS next year will visit their 2013 classrooms and, where possible, will meet their new teachers. Parents are not expected to attend at this time. The visit will be a short sharing time with the intention of children feeling comfortable about where they will come to at the beginning of next year. On Monday 10 th December the Year Six Leavers’ Social is being held. The children have been practicing their dancing and social skills with Mrs Ediker and Mrs Kerr-Aim with some special input from Ms Rae and they are ready to show off their dancing skills. As Monday 17 th December is a Teacher Only Day we would ask that you advise us if your child will need to attend. Farewells will be shared and classes will all be packed up on Friday 14 December as we are expecting the 14th to be the last school day for our students. School will finish at the usual time of 3.00pm. We expect a return from every family regarding the last day. The last day the school buses run is Friday 14 th December. Dear Parents,

WOW!

Reports: Next Friday (7th December) you will receive your child/rens end of year report.

End of year happenings: Next week is the junior school Christmas Show. This is to be held at the Salvation Army hall across the road from the school (Cameron Road) 11 a.m. on Wed 5th and Thurs 6th December.

On Thursday 13th December we have our Leavers assembly (At 9.15am to avoid the heat of the day).

On Monday 10th December the Year Six Leavers’ Social is being held. The children have been practicing their dancing and social skills with Mrs Ediker and Mrs Kerr-Aim with some special input from Ms Rae and they are ready to show off their dancing skills.

As Monday 17th December is a Teacher Only Day we would ask that you advise us if your child will need to attend. Farewells will be shared and classes will all be packed up on Friday 14 December as we are expecting the 14th to be the last school day for our students. School will finish at the usual time of 3.00pm. We expect a return from every family regarding the last day. The last day the school buses run is Friday 14th December. (NB: Bus 18 will only do the morning and Bus 16 will do both runs.

Please note: There will be a newsletter next week with any important information you need to know before the end of the year.

Sports Talk with JoThe TPS Speedway, which was held on the field last Monday, was awesome!! Each class made their own “mini stock car”, and selected the fastest boy and girl to represent their class on the track. The car and helmet designs were amazing! And so were the courageous drivers! Each car that passed the finish line first received 30 minutes of “free time” for their class. Congratulations to everyone, as each class made a fantastic team effort.

A huge thank you to Mr Maguire and Room 7 for organising the TPS speedway. You did a fantastic job, and we hope it becomes an annual event!!

Good Luck to Mr Maguire who is competing in the real speedway this weekend!! Mr Maguire will be representing TPS as “The Teachernator” at an Inter-School Competition at Baypark on Saturday night. So everyone, get your signs made, buy some tickets, and cheer for Mr Maguire!!!

************************Last Tuesday 20th November, TPS was represented by 45 athletes at the South Cluster Athletics Day at the Tauranga Domain. It was another great day with some amazing athletic talent displayed. The competition was super tough, so congratulations to the following TPS students who placed in their events. They now go on to compete at the WBOP Athletics next Wednesday 5th December. GOOD LUCK!!

link to the Tauranga Primary School account on www.weetbix.co.nz If you register through this account you get a discounted price of $35 and the school goes in the draw to win $5000 worth of sports gear!! So join the TPS team!!

A reminder that I need all school sports uniforms that have been borrowed through the year returned to the office or to me ASAP.

The school sports photos will be available for viewing and pick up next Tuesday. If you haven’t ordered a photo yet but would like to it is not too late!!

Past students Danielle Sigley & Briarley Smith are two of the team members from the Tauranga Intermediate Future Problem Solving Team which

won the National Competition and have been invited to compete in the World Competition. They

are now busy fundraising and we ask if you can support their efforts.

They will be at the FoTs Picnic tonight with sausage sizzle, bake sale and raffles to start, and we will let you know of anymore events they will

be having so that you can help support their efforts.

LOST PROPERTYWe have lots of lost property that needs to be re-claimed. Please check the box and hanger on the deck before Room 1.

Remember next year to make sure all children's clothing and property is named so it can be returned.
