MIDMAR MILEWe have a strong contingent of swimmers heading to Midmar next week. Dave Crewe-Brown (one of our parents) is really doing a great effort behind the scenes to drive the Midmar CHOC initiative for the school and create additional awareness for us. (That’s the childhood cancer awareness and fundraising) Please see links below where our school is featured.

DIARY ERROR The GDE term dates on Pg 1 are incorrect (they are 2019 dates) but the HCS ones are correct. Should you require correct GDE dates, they are readily available on their website and other places. Sorry about that oversite.

D6

By now, every parent should have downloaded the D6 but our records reflect that this is not the case. Emergency and other notifications will be sent via D6. Dean Dollenberg will be in the carpark next week (Tues, Wed and Thurs) from 07:00 to 07:30 to assist you if you are having a challenge in this regard.

ENCOUNTER CAMP PRAYER COVERING We are well underway with our planning for this HS camp (all Gr 7 – 12) which takes place at the end of term We ask that you start praying for this; we so long to see the Lord touch the lives of our pupils. Staff have started to intercede in prayer pockets already.

SMART WATCHES (Just a reiteration of our communication last year)

Smart Watches have evolved to being wearable computers with cellular phone technology, either embedded in them or used via a connected phone. As smart as these devices are, with many useful features, they are also open to abuse. These abuses include cellular communication during classes without the teacher’s knowledge or permission, surveillance of conversations, internet connectivity and misuse, filming and photographing subjects without their knowledge or permission; and cheating on tests. In addition, they cause a huge distraction for the wearer in class, as well as those around them. After a number of incidents involving smart watches, the school has taken the decision to disallow them in the school. This is in line with international trends in schools and is reflected in the code of conduct in the front of the school diary. Since it is not always easy or practical for teachers to check and identify the “smartness” of each pupil’s watch, and what features are enabled or disabled, we appeal to you as parents to ensure your child does not bring one to school. Pupils found using them will have them confiscated for 4 weeks, as they would a cellphone used at school. Those parents who have equipped their children with smart watches for the purpose of tracking their whereabouts, are urged to explore alternative solutions that prevent or do not involve the technologies described above. If your child does wear a device that allows personal GPS tracking, or fitness tracking, but without the features of a smart watch, please send us an email so that we can register this with the teachers concerned.

I hope that it’s a wonderful weekend and that you catch up on some family time.

Kind regards

G r a e m e H o l l o w a y EXECUTIVE PRINCIPAL

We ask that if your child has been selected for either the High School or the Primary School swimming team that you prioritize attendance to the practices and galas. The High School Team is attached at the end of this Newsletter and the Primary School Team will be announced early next week. Also, morning swimming practices are for any/all –not just those in the swimming teams.

Sport Practises:Anyone not at attending a sports practise needs to excuse themselves with their managers and not the sport office. This includes parents who email in. Unfortunately, it is impossible to handle all requests to the sports office. All sports manager’s names are reflected on the Co-curricular schedule and the emails for these teachers are found at the back of the school diary. Where possible, pupils should excuse themselves.

RESOLUTE ROBOTICS 2020 REGISTRATION

In 2019, we successfully launched 4 courses across 5 schools. The autonomous line following car was the most selected course and provided students with a perfect introduction to the world of electronics and coding.

The goal is for students to expand on their skill sets and complete the remaining courses as we aim to create a learning journey that takes them from high school, through to university and finally prepare them for their careers one day.
