Organist, Val Stevens, sits quietly at Elvira Lashes Out At Programmers by Elvira Capreese Don't get too enthusiastic about the great rolling Canadian record industry. It may be a little negative of me, but "all that glitters is not gold" and other than The Canadian Governments "Canada", I can honestly say that NOBODY is hoarding great amounts of money in the bank, from Canadian records, and I mean NOBODY. The population of Canada is about 10% that of the United States. The percentage of record sales in Canada is approximately 6% of those in the United States. Canadians don't buy as many records as do our neighbours to the south. If there have been more than 5 or 6 Canadian produced records that have sold more than 30,000 I can't name them. Meanwhile the cost of making a record in Toronto and Montreal (the key production centres) is the highest rate in North America and possibly the world. Today (more than ever) there is a strong movement to change all this. As well as talk of a CANAPIANIZEP union for performers that would take into con- sideration our geographical and economical problems (with a view to creating MUCH MUCH more work for musicians and singers) there is also a very strong element working toward a regulated 55% Canadian content on radio (as is in force on television). For sometime now it was thought that the radio industry would "shape up" by itself and logic might win out, but a stronger approach will be used from now on. While many have complained, a few have submitted briefs to both the Secretary Of State and The Board Of Broadcast Governors. Many feel that the re- cording of "Canada" by The Young Canada Singers was a great factor in moving the industry towards seeking regulated programming. Certainly the Canadian Government upstaged every record production company and every record company, with the publically financed session and promotion campaign behind this record. The on -air promotion was nothing short of regulated airplay in the case of this record. Many wish to know why these privileges can't be extended to private en- terprises. No one would dare suggest that the Government indulged in "PLUGOLA", but how many singles have had an advertising agency behind what resembles paid airplay? What could happen to the next privately produced disc with this kind of money behind it.? So Canadian records aren't good enough??? This particular one sold over 250,000 records which the Beatles couldn't match. I don't think the music industry would STOOP to being subsidized, but possibly the private investor would like the same breaks the Government gives itself. Time will tell, just exactly what will happen, but I'm putting my money behind a high percentage of regulated programming, and you might be looking for someone to blame, if you are a programmer. Val and Wayne are the quiet members in the group while in front of strangers. Both can be most talkative in front of people they know well. Mike is the easiest to get to know. His smile and well-balanced personality has won favour with Power fans. He is also one of the zany characters in today's musical business. His musical tastes generally run toward the Beach Boy type material although he does like the material the group is now using. The two brothers, Charles and Ralph, are unlike. Ralph is the slave-driver of the group, one of the organizers and the person responsible for making the boys work when they don't want to. Charlie is more easy going and likes to talk things out. Charlie studied under the well-known jazz drummer, Ed Thigpen. Brian works at the Bud Matton Theatri- cal Agency during the day and takes care of the bookings for the group. His enthusiasm and sincerity has convinced many new club owners to book the Power. The Power are leaving shortly for a run of nightclub and one -niter appearances up and down the U.S. Atlantic Seaboard. They have added new arrangements and in- struments and with their personality and dynamic showmanship, they're like the word POWER. They could be known as "fhe Power from Canada".

Can you take 4 minutes and 48seconds of "I Got You Babe"?Well, try it on for size. That'sthe way this album kicks off, andwhat a great lead-in. It's instru-mental, you know. The hit versionis the last cut, but in betweenyou have "It's The Little Things","Good Times" and "Trust Me".On Side 2 there's "Don't Talk ToStrangers", "I'm Gonna LoveYoe, "Just A Name" and"Babe". It's an exciting 32 min-utes and 13 seconds. One sugges-tion, if you haven't seen themovie, get the album first, you'llenjoy the movieseen the movieyou'll want toagain.ATCO - 33-214

Prepare to blow your mind. Herethey are for real. You don't haveto put up with anymore bootleggedsound from your local ear ache. The Beatles are here along withhalf a hundred of their friends, thanks to Madame Tussaud. She's really English, you know.Anyway, ain't that a gas of an al-bum cover? I got so excited I

played the cover and smoked therecord. Besides a new Beatleportrait, you get Sgt. Pepper cut-outs, printed lyrics and get this,13 new Beatle songs. Ooh, I'mso glad I'm 13. Imagine, Sgt.Pepper cut-outs. Just what willthe English think of next? Paul'swearing an OPP crest on his leftarm, you know.CAPITOL - MAS 2653

Who's the hottest group in NorthAmerica? All together now, PAULREVERE & THE RAIDERS, andFreddy Weller. He's the newRaider, you know. Well, anyway, here's why they are the top groupin America. No silly, not becauseGloria Stayers, Editor of 16 Maga-zine wrote the liner notes, but itsure helps. "Kicks", "Ups AndDowns", "Just Like Me". That'swhy Paul Revere & The Raidersare the hottest group in NorthAm erica, and just wait `til youhear them do "Louie, Louie" and, well take my word for it, this istheir best yet and besides, thosenice Columbia people have in-cluded an 8 page souvenir colourbook of the gang with each album.COLUMBIA -KCL 2662

WESTERN

UNIONFROM CALIFORNIA

Three's A Crowd, the Ottawa folk-rock group, has at least one fan in Hollywood.Their new record,"Honey Machine", has beenreleased here on the Epic label. A recordstore stocked one copy on release date andthe same afternoon it was gone.///I'm on thelookout for new releases by The Paupers onVerve/Folkways and The Dickens on Dyna-voice. Unfortunately I've found that someCanadian records released in the United Stateswere never distributed nationally. Most of

them end up in larger record stores in NewYork City and that's about all.

The Sparrow now work out of San

Francisco and record for Columbia Records.I caught the Knickerbockers (remember

"Lies, Lies") in concert last week. Theyhave changed their bag to blues and canimitate The Righteous Brothers and The FourTops like no other group.6/What a line-up atThe Hollywood Bowl this summer: The Lovin'Spoonful, The Mamas and Papas, Paul Revereand The Raiders, Simon and Garfunkel, LouRawls and Peter, Paul and Mary will be ap-pearing in concerts.///The Monkees' thirdalbum, "Headquarters" has been releasedand some of the tracks are just great.///Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, writers ofmany Monkee hits, will make their debut assingers on Herb Alpert's A&M label.

Garry Bonner and Alan Gordon arethe hottest writing duo at present. They wroteThe Turtles biggest hit, "Happy Together." 7Currently riding the charts is "She BelongsTo Me" by The Turtles on White Whale(Quality in Canada). "Girls In Love" by GaryLewis and The Playboys on Liberty, "Melan-choly Music Man" by The Righteous Brotherson Verve, "Me About You" by The Mob Men

and "Two In The Afternoon" by Dino, Dealand Billy on Reprise Records. By the way,the little tykes will be appearing soon atMassey Hall, in Toronto.

A new label to watch for is ODE. Itbelongs to Lou Adler, who produces all thehits for The Mamas and Papas. Two newcom-ers to the label are Scott McKenzie with "IfYou're Going To San Francisco Be Sure ToWear Some Flowers In Your Hair" and "Feb-ruary Sunshine" by The Giant Sunflower.

Capitol Records has released "TheJokers" from the British movie by the samename. The song is performed by Peter andGordon./i/Another fantastic song is "Walk InThe Sunlight" by The Checkmates Ltd. doneIn a true Righteous Brothers style.///TheByrds will soon be flying high on the charts

STACCATOS PERFORM FORHOLLYWOOD ELITEOttawa: One of the last appearancesthe Staccatos made before leaving fortheir Capitol (Hollywood) recordingsession was at the National PressClub where they entertained almost200 of Hollywood's top stars andTV and film producers. Among theguests were Barbara Eden, AgnesMoorehead, Dale Robertson, JackieCooper and Harry Akerman as well asmembers of the Ottawa and Hollywoodpress.

The Staccatos have also beenchosen to perform for The Queen atLansdowne Park on July 1st.

LENNY GAINES GAINSIN POPULARITYWith the current purge, by program-mers, against the use of discs havingsuggestive lyrics (narcotics and sex)Columbia's release of "The ConeyIsland Parade", by Lenny Gaines, could almost be earmarked as a bomb. But not so in Canada. Many Canadianprogrammers appreciate the well donespoof on the rather over -publicizedbanana bit and are presenting theGaines disc with this in mind. Saleshave not shown that much of an in-crease but with more and more pro-grammers beginning to lean on it, thedisc could take off and become a hotitem. The U.S. release has apparentlybeen re-edited and re -titled.

with their new release "Have You Seen HerFace", on Columbia.///Johnny Rivers has anold Smokey and The Miracles song titled"Tracks Of My Tears". /''The Associationmoved from the Valiant label to the WarnerBros. trademark coming out with a sure hit,"Windy".///lt didn't take long for a bananarecord to come out. The United Fruit Co. (yes, that's the name of the group) have a littleditty called "Yes, We Have No Bananas".
