Jesus Taught Us to Remember Him

Bible Passage: Matthew 26:17-30; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26

Key Bible Verse: 1 Corinthians 11:24

Life ApplicationI can remember things Jesus did.

Level of Biblical Learning (Jesus)Jesus taught people about what God is like.

What do you remember about Jesus? Let's look at three key things He did at Passover.•Read Matthew 26:17-19. Jesus had already made

preparations for the meal. The Passover meal was an elaborate ceremony that lasted several days. The meal had a particular order to be followed. Do we have a particular order when observing the Lord's Supper today?

•Read Matthew 26:20-25. Jesus revealed a betrayer in the midst of the disciples. This revelation was met with denial, tinged with self-doubt. Who was the one disciple named in this passage? Judas tried to cast doubt from himself. How did Jesus respond to his question? Jesus knows our thoughts and motives. Are our thoughts and motives pure and focused on Jesus?

•Read Matthew 26:26-30. Matthew turns his focus from Judas to the actual meal. Imagine what went through the men's minds when they heard Jesus speak. The Passover meal had been celebrated the same way for centuries—representing the animal's blood that covered the people's sins. Jesus changed the meal to a new ceremony, the communion. The communion meal Jesus instituted here identified that it would be Jesus' shed blood that covers our sins.

•Read 1 Corinthians 11:23-26. Paul emphasized the remembrance part of the meal. We are to remember the things Jesus did, taught, and experienced. What do you remember about Jesus? What do you help preschoolers learn and remember about Jesus? Help preschoolers understand the Lord's Supper is a special meal eaten to remember what Jesus did for us.

Jesus Taught Us to Remember HimBased on Matthew 26:17-30;

1 Corinthians 11:23-26

The disciples came to Jesus and asked where He wanted them to prepare the Passover meal.

Jesus told the disciples to go into the city and find a certain man. The disciples were to tell the man that Jesus said His time is near and the Passover meal would be at the man's house. The disciples obeyed and went to prepare the meal.

That evening Jesus and His disciples ate together. Jesus told the disciples that one of the men would be unkind to Him. Each disciple began to ask if that person was him. Jesus said it would be a man who dipped his hand in the bowl with Him. One of the men, Judas, asked if it was him. Jesus told Judas that he (Judas) had said it.

Jesus took the bread, thanked God for it, and gave each man a piece. Jesus told the men to remember [pause] Him. Jesus took a cup and told the men to drink from the cup and to remember [pause] Him.

•Direct children to open their Bibles to the bookmarks at 1 Corinthians.
