Welcome back! I hope you’ve survived your first week. This week’s quote particularly resonates with me as I reflect on the fact that I survived my first year. I am sure everyone is leery of the massive amounts of free advice solicited during law school but I truly believe the worst part of first year is worry-ing about what you do not even know you are worrying about. Hmm, I am hoping that as 2L’s and 3L’s we move past this.
As your SBA Secre-tary, I would like to in-troduce myself. My hometown is San Fran-cisco and I attended Tu-lane University for Un-dergrad. Although I did not come to Santa Clara straight from New Or-leans I vividly recall my undergraduate memo-ries. I am sure that this year’s first year class with an average age of 22 can not believe that they are indeed starting their law school career.
With this being the second week of school I am hoping that the ILs are starting to feel more like they are a part of the Santa Clara Community. This week’s Grapevine has several reminders that this Thursday is club day. If you are not sure which clubs exist or if you are certain that you want to be a part of a specific club show up on Thursday.
Value the thoughts, experiences, and guid-ance from students and faculty alike. That’s what allows us to have a strong community we all take pride in. There will also be plenty of free advice and refreshments.
Lastly, law school is a
busy time for any stu-dent, first year or gradu-ating 3L alike. Though this may seem like an overwhelming task we’ve all taken on, balancing a rigorous course of study with outside commit-ments (families, children, relationships, work, etc.), the upside to all this is that it makes us appreci-ate our personal time all the more. So really enjoy the people and activities in your life outside law school because these are the things that keep us happy and healthy, and thus make us better law-yers at the end of the day. I look forward to
working with everyone this year. Please don't’ hesitate to contact me at s c u g r a p e [email protected] if you have any questions, com-ments, or suggestions.
Have a great week! Take Care,
Candice

Dear Students...
I would like to welcome all the returning students back to Santa Clara...and for you first year students, congratulations on completing
your first week of law school! As August ends and we move into September, many exciting events will be happening all around campus.
OCI's will begin soon, so don't be surprised if you see your favorite
upper-division students all cleaned up, as they head off to their respective interviews. Fall elections will also be happening on
September 5th, 6th, and 7th, so don't forget to make sure you sign up in Bannan Lounge if you would like to run for class representative.
For those of you that would like to share your experiences with your family, the Law Admissions Office will once again be holding the
"Parents and Partners" weekend on September 16th.
One final announcement...make sure you keep your calendars clear this coming Thursday, August 31st, as the SBA is sponsoring the annual
welcome back party at Club Glo in downtown San Jose.
I am looking forward to meeting and working with you all this year. All the Best,-
Dan

Concerned that you are preparing for class, but may be spinning your wheels? Confused about how to brief, whether to brief, or the purpose of reading and briefing? We will answer your questions and present concrete exercises for sharpening case reading and briefing. The primary focus of the workshop will be on relevance,
holdings and rules, while we lay a foundation for synthesis and outlining skills. Time and stress management issues will also be addressed.
